i am not getting 14+ volts so i bought a multimeter today and my battery is good. 12.6x volts with the car off. with the car on it goes to 12.5x volts and i checked my alternator and it is the same. i called powermaster and they said to check the grounds to the alternator before calling it dead. i bought a ground strap and made sure it was grounded good. i even bought new battery terminals. i checked it again and nothing. i bought a new alternator and replaced the "old" one. fired the car up and same problem. the battery is not being charged.

i changed my torque converter out and now all of the sudden my battery is not being charged? what could be the problem? i didnt touch my wiring at all...

ok i double checked everything and i put the two ground straps from my firewall to the engine and i clipped that extra started wire piece so its not in the way and it didnt really change anything. i still only have 12.48 volts at the battery with it running. its like 12.5 volts at the alternator. IM STUMPED

do you have the stock style with external voltage reg. or the newer style with a 2 pin plug in the top with built in reg....or do you have a one wire alt?.....if you have the 2 pin plug in the top of your alt. from the front of your car leaning over the rad support.one wire is votage monitior its and on the left side of the plug and should hook to where your batt is connected on your alt. the other needs to recieve 12v from the ignition when turned on..and thats the wire on the right....the alt. gets ground from the engine block..makre sure you have 12v on both with key on...check that and let me know...DaWrench

Mike, make sure the battery is grounded to the block itself.. Just a thought..

Also you might want to check for continuity with the meter. Put it on the bell test function, touch the two ends and make sure the meter beeps. Then put one end on the negative battery post and the other on the alternator case and see if it beeps, it should...

i have a one wire alternator. externally regulated. i have both the powermaster 8002 100 amp and the proform chrome 100 amp. i hooked them up 3 wire though. i will check for 12v with the key on on both of those wires now...

ok i checked out the one wire and it was 0.00 volts and the other was -0.01 volts.

its actually grounded to the motor mount but ive never had a problem before. the car starts and runs fine but i havent even taken it out for a test drive yet because i know it will die after the battery gets drained.

It is internally regulated. Do you have it wired to a external regulator? I any event, that alternator can be wired as a 1 wire or a 3 wire. leave the 2 small wires disconnected and see if it will charge, you will have to rev the engine to "start" the alternator charging.

ok i checked out the one wire and it was 0.00 volts and the other was -0.01 volts.

Thats your problem right there. (wiring it as a 3 wire) One should have power all the time, the other should only have power when key is on.

whoops did i say externally regulated? my fault.

anyway, thanks again to DaWrench. it was those two wires for the 3 wire operation. i eliminated them and ran a wire from my coil to the left spade terminal on the alternator and bam: 14 volts.
