: New best times with Drag Radials.....long
19_chevelle_71 Oct 17th, 03, 10:39 PM All, just wanted to share my progress with the new combo. One of my original goals was to get the car run in the 11's straight off the street on up street radials (Radial T/A's). However, the lack of consistency in 60ft times have made fine tuning this relatively new combo a pain in the a$$. My 60's averaged 1.90 - 1.97 with a 2.0 - 2.2 thrown in there every 4th or 5th run. These short times netted me a best of of 12.25 @ 112 mph.
Well....I couldn't wait any longer with the end of the season nearing so I broke down and bought some 275/60/15 BFG Drag Radials.
First run tonight, straight off the street, no cool down, netted me a 1.82 60 ft, 12.141 at 111.60 with some slight spin and bumped up against the rev limiter on the 1-2 shift. I came back around since it was still an open test session... lowered the tire pressure to 20 lbs and launched at 2500 rpm which resulted in 1.81 60ft, 12.100 @ 112.24 with relatively no spin.
Unfortunately it started raining right after the second run, so MIR shut down for the night.
I am sure I have at least 1-1.5 tenths I need to work out of my 60ft with these tires and a cool down but I have to say I am impressed with these tires so far. These tires even felt real decent in the rain on the way home.
Man I am so close I can taste it...11's or bust baaaaaby!!!
mr 4 speed Oct 17th, 03, 10:46 PM  graemlins/thumbsup.gif Nice!
Bob West Oct 17th, 03, 11:21 PM You ought to be able to get down and steady in the 1.7 range with those tires. I was running 15-16psi in mine. 275/60/15's. Once the BFG's wore out,I went back to M/T et drags and best 60ft with those so far is 1.69,,,and usually up to 1.74.
-SS454- Oct 18th, 03, 12:22 AM I'm still very impressed with your 60fts and 1/4 with the Radial T/As. You need to change your sig to say 275/60R15 Drag Radials. Could also put the 12.25@112 on 255 radial T/As in there. 11s are close, keep at it smile.gif
i'm new here, so forgive me for not knowing what's going on, but are you not running much boost on that 383? it looks like you've got the cam, heads, gears, stall, etc. to run alot better times. smile.gif
19_chevelle_71 Oct 18th, 03, 9:50 AM All, thanks for the input/feedback. This site is a godsend for helping me sort out my combo.
m71, I agree with you that this combo has much more potential in it but I am still working out the bugs and except for last night I been on straight street tires. This was my fifth time to the track since the new motor and I am still sorting out timing/jetting/launch technique...not too mention each time I have gone the air seems to turn real bad (90-95% humidity).
Once I get timing/jetting issues dialed in I will be looking to bump the boost up to 7 lb range which should be good for another 25 - 35 hp. I am taking this one step at a time since I plan on keeping this thing on 93 Octane diet. I expect to pull off the street and run in the 11.7 - 11.8 and 114 - 115 mph range eventually.
nosit Oct 18th, 03, 12:39 PM get some MT ET STREETS i run 28x10's on a best of 1.565 60ft run about 15 psi racing and 25 psi on street1 and love them i have tried the drag bfg drag radials and just blew them off with same prob's you are having. et streets just suck in the rain!!LOL

The rest of the passes, the car dead hooked, picked up the front end and has gone as quick as 1.50 in the 60'.
Sorry, but bias ply slicks (either true slicks or cheater slicks) suck to drive on both the street and race.
Maybe you shouldn't have given up so quick on the DR's...but then again, maybe I'm just lucky graemlins/thumbsup.gif :D .
19_chevelle_71 Oct 18th, 03, 5:19 PM I agree the ET streets would prob be more consistent but I am going for the drive this thing anywhere/anytime theme. If I can cut a 1.84 (only managed this once) on Radial TA's I am pretty sure I will be able to get these drag radials in the consistent 1.6-1.7 range which is all I am looking for. Those short times and some more tuning will put me solidly into the 11's. Keep in mind, this car will never see a trailer, or more than 93 octane and needs to be able to handle Wash D.C. traffic every now and then.
68chevelle533 Oct 18th, 03, 6:27 PM Nice job. Sounds like a nice ride. My freinds mini blower sounded awesume when he was on it. With a 112 mph trap speed you will probably be into the 11s by just by playing more with your launch technique and tire pressures. I would think better weather should pick you up another 1-2 tenths. That and two more lbs of boost and I wouldn't be suprised to see some 11.50's.
i agree with 10secbu. i just got back from the track today and my best friend's 65 elky with a f/t 383, xe284 cam, pro 1 230's, air gap intake, 3.73's, 3000 stall, and an Edelbrock nos system with 150hp jets just went a 6.81@103 in the1/8mi with a 1.58 60ft time on 275/60 D/R's. it runs 7.63@89mph on motor and is pretty consistant. he has high dollar shocks on it, but still has stock control arms on the rear. with some adjustable uppers and good lowers i think it'll do even better and get more consistant. he had the nos on a .4 delay to get it to hook. granted i think it would be easier to get it to hook with M/T's, but it definitely is possible with the BFG D/R's. ;)
