Never concerned me before but after realizing my bb had straight dual exhaust with no X or H pipe I began wondering If I needed to add X or H, or leave it as is. It sounds good but does pop a little when letting off the gas.
Thanks.

I have had the H-Pipe, and converted to X-Pipe. I like the way it tamed the 496 down, but at wot it is just as loud. It also adds about 10-20hp due to the increased scavenging.

i like the x-pipe i recently installed which replaced my h-pipe. It does away with the "old school" sound a lot of people like, but i like the different sound it gives off.

I also installed an X pipe this year with Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers and I think it sounds really good.Fairly quiet at cruising speed, but has that nice aggresive sound when at WOT.

10-20HP???????!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you serious? Im not doubting because honestly I dont know a thing about X pipes, how they work or what the difference is in sound over duals or duals with an H pipe. Im just questioning because 10-20 hp increase seems a lot to me. Please explain how this can make 10-20hp with no other modifications other than connecting the dual exhaust pipes in an X configuration.

I took out my X-pipe, and it pretty much got louder at WOT - more of a "rap" now. I like it.

But, I do have 22" mufflers so I'm quiet anyway.

Call me 'ol skool.....the x pipe made my BB have a higher pitched, almost indy car sound. I replaced it with an H pipe and got the deeper tone I like. Just my preference.

A little overstated (that's what happens when you take too much cold medicine). However, HERE (http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/exhaust_system_installation/photo_10.html) is a Car Craft article.

HERE (http://www.boyleworks.com/ta400/psp/exhaust3.html) is another good link from some testing, but I can't calculate the gains right now.

Regardless, no pipe, great down low. X-pipe great up top, H-pipe in between.

Looks like your keyboard got stuck there with the ???????!!!!!!!!!!!!! .....or was that your pure excitement?

Um yeah I guess my pure excitment is about on a parallel to your cold medicine. Thanks for posting the link. Wish is was the whole article because it doesnt seem to be exactly fair. First you have open headers, the 2 1/2" pipe with an H pipe. 3rd run is 2 1/2" pipe into 3" pipe, then into the X. That jump from 2.5 into 3" should have been done on the H pipe to make the test fair dontcha think? Again thanks for the explanation though. Hope the cold is gone soon.

I just changed my exhaust to a 2-1/2" pypes brand w/ X- pipe from a 2-1/4" true dual set up. The idle sound I get with my 331 reminds me of a big block, the WOT sound like a foreign sports car though. The power increase is very evident, I believe the extra scavenging really helps stock manifolds. I'm getting anxious to see how quick this malibu really is, I was thinking mid 14s but it feels quicker than that. Time will tell.

I have straight and when I assembled my engine I also blocked off the heat riser. The sound was ugly!! Almost like my high school days when a couple guys had old chev 6 cars and split the manifold, a "braaaat" sound that was not macho, not "muscle car" it was ugly embarasing! I have since reconected the heat riser and all is good, no reason to change, but if I where starting over I think it would have an "X".
