Georgia69 Nov 17th, 03, 9:22 AM Cool! Sounds like a really nice street/strip car.
bigjimzlll Nov 17th, 03, 9:38 AM Nice pass...is the xs282 cam enuff? I am building a simular engine..more C/R.. an im considering the xs290 cam..I have the xs282 in my 355 now..and its great...even considered just using it in the 406...just not sure it will be big enuff. Is it done pulling at 6000rpm?
mr 4 speed Nov 17th, 03, 10:03 AM Nice! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Nice to see the original owner is having fun too
Darracq Nov 17th, 03, 11:56 AM Big Jim He said he used a s282 it is different from the xs282.
Depending on what converter and gears you have the xs 282 may or maynot be better thatn the xs290. The xs282 should go right at 6000 and it is a better cam than the 282s. I had a cam about the same spes as the 290 in my 406 with 4.10 gears and 4000 stall it ran mid 11s.I shifted it at 6200
L48M20 Nov 17th, 03, 7:09 PM I'm going to use the same cam and hope for 7000 rpm shifts!

jethro81z28 Nov 17th, 03, 11:20 PM The comp 282s seems to run out of steem about 5800 in my combo but Aim considering changing my cam to a Isky 555 grind 254 258 @50 and .555 .565 lift with a 106 lobe center any inputs?
onovakind67 Nov 18th, 03, 9:52 AM It's interesting to me that the first thing guys usually blame for lackluster performance is the cam. I think you're looking in the wrong places for an e.t. improvement as you should be able to run 12 flat/1.6 second 60' easily with your present setup. What rpm are you at in the lights? If it's less than your shift point, you need more gear.
A 700R4 doesn't lend itself well to a peaky cam. The wide spread of the gears works better with a cam that has a lot of grunt at 3500 rpm, because that's where you end up when it shifts. Over revving in 1st gear costs you dearly, and at the rate of change of rpm it's easy to do. When we race we just put the tranny in Drive and let it shift itself, it's very consistent.
Have you looked at timing, jetting, fresh air induction, traction, converter stall speed and lockup, fuel system, shift points, driving style, staging depth, etc? We improved our daily driver car from 12.90's to 12.10's adddressing these issues without any engine changes.
If your engine runs out of 'steam' at 5800, why shift at 6000?
AllGoNoShow Nov 18th, 03, 12:00 PM [Good read onovakind67..it is always the little things that need to be looked at, but everyone always goes straight to the bigger, 'better, more expensive parts.
I gained .15 tenths at the track by one jet change....and when I tried shifting at 5500K instead of 5000K I lost nearly .25 tenths.
jethro81z28 Nov 18th, 03, 11:49 PM Thanks guys I see your point. The reason I brought this cam issue up was because My mechanic that built the motor ,trans and rear-end told me from day one that my cam is to small he said, with the head work that I had done to my Dart heads that a cam with around a .550 lift or more would really wake the car up. He and the machine shop (pro cell) figured the Isky .555 grind would be the best for my combo. I sent my info. to comp and they recommended the 294s I sent info to U D Harold and he recommended his 280/ 284 .247 .251 560 565 (1.6) and Crower said that their 294sf solid would work good I told all them that I did not want to shift over 6200. As for my combo now timing is set at 34* I tried more but it runs best at 34 the 800 Holley DP was jetted for my car and total timing is in by 2800 I have a eldebrock 110 fuel pump and a 1/2 line from pump to tank I also have traction bars and sub-frame connectors. I forgot my converter is a 3500 Hugh's and it only locks up in overdrive
plain 69 Nov 19th, 03, 12:12 AM Sounds like a pretty good running 406. Check my signature. I am pleased with the performance of mine except for the mixing of race fuel because of the 11.00 to 1 compression and the 225 p.s.i. cylinder pressure. Forgot to add that it has had 1.72 60' with the drag radials and made 375 hp @ 5000 rpms and 480 ftlbs. of torque@ 3500 on the engine dyno. The engine builder seems to think it has more now since it dynoed because of breaking in plus a little better tune possibly.
i have to agree with the other fella, that car has a half second or better in tuning it in and varying shift points some. i know of similar combos, only that they are running SMALLER camshafts, that are in the 11's with 3.73's rpm air gap, and a hydraulic flat tappet cam. i think the exhaust is a litle on the small side, are the headers 1 5/8" or 1 3/4" S/C's? those would be the 2 things i'd be looking at as far as not being able to turn any rpms.
