Hey guys, I think I have a BIG problem. The other day I pulled my 69SS out of my driveway, And heard a noise. When I pulled back in to look I noticed my right rear shock was laying on my rearend. Upon further inspection I see the upper shock mount is basically torn away from the spring perch and completely seperated. Any ideas as to how you go about taking care of this problem or do I need to replace the frame? Please help!!!!!!
Thanks in advance, Jeff

Its called rust from 34 years :D . Clean it and weld it back to where it came from.

Unfortunatly I don't think clean and weld will work here. The shock mount is mangaled and torn, guessing due to previous owners love affair with air shocks.

I will have to try and remember this thread the next time there is a "debate" going on about use of air shocks on these cars.........

Can you get some pictures posted?

The worst case senario may be dropping the frame to repair it. It is very unlikely the frame will need a total replacement.

Sorry to post a question in this thread but I have air shocks on my '67, should I replace them because this could happen to my frame?

yep, the shock mounts were not meant to hold up the rear of the car.

Funny, my car had air shocks for about 15 years and there was no problem.

Have to admit I didn't keep the car "jacked up" though. Don't know how high the guy had it before me.

Definatly get rid of the air shocks. Put on a good pair of gas shocks and maybe a set of air bags. The shock towers are not made to handle all the abuse of air shocks.

Hey everyone, yes my car is proof of why you don't use air shocks to lift the rear of your car for anything except carrying a load. I used to see this chevelle riding around town before I bought it and the previous owner always had it up. I took them out right after purchasing the car, but never expected this to come from it. I will try to get some pics up right away so anybody with air shocks can see what there future may hold if they put that kind of pressure on the shock mounts. Thanks again, Jeff

If you use air shocks as they were intended to be used you will NEVER have a problem!

But if you want your car to look like a wedge of cheese going down the road while you do hard launches, I guess you will do a lot of repairs.
