: NOS or Edelbrock nitrous system + fuel & timing question?

I've been searching for a new toy to put on the 70 and I think I want to add a small shot of nitrous, probably 100...no more than 150. I've been torn between the NOS Super Powershot, NOS Sniper, and the Edelbrock Performer kits. The Edelbrock seems to be the more expensive and only is adjustable up to 100 shot unless you spend another $70 for the next level up. Whats the deal with the NOS Sniper kit? Why is it so cheap?

Also, I'm currently running the Summit version (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?Ntt=sum%2Dg3134&N=0&part=SUM%2DG3134&autoview=sku&Ntk=KeywordSearch) of the 140 gph Aeromotive electric fuel pump and just want to make sure that this will flow enough fuel for the carb and nitrous system. The carb is a 750cfm Edelbrock and the motor is a GMPP 454HO.

I won't be using the nitrous very much...its primarily a street car and will only see a few passes down the strip at the most.

I've been thinking about this also, I have the stock fuel pump though.I've been looking at this http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/NOS/NOSNS/TopShot.html . What could I safely run with cast pistons?

Jegs has a sale going on, on the Edelbrock systems. $360 for the 50-100hp kit. $430 for the 100-350 hp kit.

Sniper kit is $370.

Things I like about the Edelbrock kit over the Sniper. I like the braided lines to the solenoids, which would make them easier to mount. It also looks like the Edelbrock kit has a better wiring harness, which includes a relay.

I have been using my Edelbrock system for over two years now. I added a purge valve and a bottle warmer to keep the bottle at 85 deg during the winter racing season. It has been an excellent system. It helped me win the Street Rod Championship in 2003. I am using it again in this years 11.90 index points race. Check out our website, I am the webmaster.

A '67 Chevelle called the "Punisher" is in first place, and my '67 Elky currently in 3rd. Sorry to ramble on.....I have the 50, 75, 100hp kit. I use the 100 when I need low 11's and the 50hp pills when I need a little extra hp. The system is great!

Hmmmmm...$430 for the Performer RPM kit from Jegs eh? How long is that sale going on?

Danny, do you think its worth going over 100 shot on a street machine or should I save the extra $70 and go for the 100 max (Performer kit)?

Anyone have any criticisms about my fuel supply? Another thing I forgot to add, I'm running a fuel cell with 3/8" braided line all the way to the carb.

In reality all the kits do the same thing, add horsepower at the touch of a button or stomp of the gas pedal. I have been fond of NOS. I hear Edelbrock is just as good, followed by Nitrous Express. I run a 150 shot Nitrous Powershot system with purge valve, high flow bottle valve, NOS solenoids and all that jazz. The great thing about nitrous is its definately leaves your engine streetable and it can be used only when needed so you can put it up to 150-200-250-300...shots and not have to worry much. I read in an old issue of Hot Rod Mag that they put up to 500 shot on a 4 cyl import engine before it totally blew up, I not only think I know your 454 can handle a meir 150. My second choice after the Powershot was the Sniper kit, It gives you everthing you need to get the job done for a good price, but thats just my 2 cents.

If you are planning on using it on the street, there is no need to go over 100hp. You will spin your street tires all day with with anything bigger. Use the extra money for a purge valve. This gets the air out of the system before you hit the nitrous. It will also impress your friends if you set it up so that it exits your at your front window. As far as a fuel pump, I use a Holley 140ghp mechanical fuel pump with a regulator and set it for 7psi at idle. I have also run this system with a 110 ghp holley mechanical pump and no regulator. I did not have any problems, but upgraded to the 140 just to make sure.

Thanks for the advise guys...looks like I'll have to give Jegs a call this weekend! I was thinking about adding the microswitch and bracket that Edelbrock sells so the nitrous only comes on at WOT. I gave a thought to the purge valve too, but they're kinda pricey.

One more question...

I know you should retard the timing when running nitrous, but how much? I've heard 4 degrees for a 100 shot...is that about right? So 2 degres for every 50 shot?

Another thing, this GMPP 454HO states to set the timing at only 4 degrees advanced. I have it at 10 degrees advanced right now and have had it as high as 14. Where should I run my timing with the nitrous? I also have trouble with dieseling every now and then...is that caused by too much or too little advance?

Can I run 100 shot with a stock fuel pump?

Rule of thumb is to retard total timing by 2 degs every 50hp shot. Every car is different. I have an XE 284 cam and an 11.0 compression ratio. I am able to run 36 degs. of total timing on 93 octane pump gas. and a 50 shot with no problem. The Edelbrock kit comes with a micro switch.

A local rule of thumb is: If you can run a 1/4 pass on a hot day with no pinging, then chances are good that you can hit your car with 100hp of nitrous without having to do anything. The jets in the kits are usually set up on the rich side. If you can do this, I would still remove at least 2 degs of timing and or run a cooler spark plug just to be safe. Make sure that you run at least 93 octane fuel. Use an adjustable timing gun and rev up to 3500 to get your total timing reading.
Good luck

I know the Edelbrock kit comes with a microswitch, but I'm probably going to buy the one that you put on the carb so the nitrous only comes on at WOT. The one in the kit is just one you mount in the car I think.

Do you find total timing with the vac advance hooked up or not?

You check the total timing with the vac hose disconnected. The switch that comes in the Edelbrock kit is a micro switch that attaches to the carb and works only at WOT. I have 2 years of racing on mine with no problems.

Well thats good to know that it comes withthe switch that connects to the carb. I assume they provide a decent bracket for it?
