Im rebuilding my LS-6 crate 454 after I spun a #7 rod bearing, and I need some help picking a cam...

Here are the specs -

454 .030 over
4 bolt mains
New factory forged crank
Factory forged rods
11:1 forged pistons
ported ls-6 rectangle port heads, 325cc intake runners, 118cc combustion chambers.
Comp roller tip rockers
Edelbrock vic jr intake

I was thinking along the lines of lunati grind part# 40227 259 269 .620 .620

Is this cam to big for the amount of compression?

Also, what size carb would be required to feed this?

Thanks,

What's your goal with this motor/car? Street? Strip? I'm sure he'll need this information.

Not it's not, not having my DCR calcualtor here in FL, I would hazard to guess that you could use the venerable 288/296 grind, and at 11:1 your DCR should be at 8.2-8.3 or so. That grind would drop it into the 7's. OK, but would the smaller grind fit your intended RPM range better, and do you mind running the best gas? Torque is all about cylinder pressure. UDHarold tends to like bigger grinds, and I'm sure they do BHP better, but will it ET better based on the rest of the drivetrain??

Anyway, Chris 69SS and a few others run the smaller grind at 11:1 successfully.

Its going to be a street/stip motor, I dont mind running premium, but Im hoping to not have to run race gas... I have 4.11 gears with a Muncie close ratio 4sp.

Im hoping for low 12's to mid 11's...

As for RPM range, id like to keep it in the 6000-6800 range

The 288/296f10 would work with your compression cam specs are 255/263@50 612/630 lift you DCR would be around 8.2 should run strong on premium fuel.I run the cam in my car with 93 octane and 10.7 compression with know problems.I have a sound clip of chris_69_ss car,I could e-mail it to you if you would like to hear it!

i think you might want to consider changing to a dual plane intake like the gm one or a performer rpm if the car will be primarily street driven. with the right solid cam and tuning i bet you will get into the 11's. i would recommend using a hp 950 carb if you don't have a carb already. i bet if you 1. block the manifold heat in the intake. 2. run an under intake splash shield. 3. try using a distributer with no vacuum advance and careful timing you might be able to use 93-94 premium fuel. either way you will be walking the line on detonation with the right camshaft. good luck mike

Well, I just wound up getting a scat 4340 stroker crank for a 496 rather than just putting together the 454....

Would this change my cam requirement at all?

Just remember you will need to have some serious piston notching/rebalancing done so the valves will clear the factory LS6 pistons if you decide on using that cam.

Ah, yes, there you go. Good call BORDERT.

May I suggest that you play with D2K some b/c now that a 496 is in the works, b/c you don't need all that much CR. or cam to make great power!!

Make her about 10 to 10.25 to 1 CR. for pump gas and cam accordingly so you can burn it!!

AND I bet you will be supprised how much power you can make with a mild 496!!

I bet 3.55's or 3.73's will be about all the gear you will need if you can't get by with 3.31's??

D2K say's my mild, about 9.8 to 1 CR. 496, with just Merlin ovals, a 750cfm, 3310-2 Holley and Strip Dom. single plane, 1.75" four tube, long headers and a CC 282S solid cam should make around 550 hp at 5500 rpm!! I'm runnimg 3/8" rods so am not going to rpm her much above 55 to 5700rpm!!!

Heck, I really don't think I need too, imho b/c I have a '67 Camaro b/c it is fairly light..

Now Im rethinking the whole combo, so far it's looking like race gas only, strip occaisonally street as the wallet dictates :D

The crank and rods are scat 4340 forged from a guy that works at the machine shop. Brand new.
He says that they are good for 7500 rpm and 1200HP, when balanced.

Lunati Cam 40223
grind #SPEB2 268-278
268 278@.050 .647 .657
SRP forged stroker piston 12.7:1
Victor Jr intake
950hp holley
Hooker super comp 2" 3,1/2" headers
3 in exhaust, dynomax ultraflo's
comp roller tip rockers

Eventually a 200 shot of nitrous

Sound good everyone?
