Well....depends what has been done to the 66 Chevelle!
What suspension mods/upgrades
Drag radials, slicks, etc

Ben's 454HO started out high 15s....
AFter a bunch of stuff and a year of infrequent 1/4 mile outings, he ran 12.9something at 106 in his 68 Elky, 4.11s and a 2500 stall, 28" DRs

Assuming the same for your 66, more engine, lighter car....
With traction and a good set-up////certainly low 12s

I was in Gardena this time last year. Hasn't changed all that much in 20 years....

I have installed 3 ZZ502's in a 68, 71, and a 72 Chevelle. The 68 has a 3.73 gear ,3000 converter, and a 28" tall tire. He bought the long block kit, we added a RPM Air-Gap and a 850 dp, he runs 11.70's on average. The 71 and the 72 bought the complete kit , stock out of the box the run 11.90's on average. The 3.73 seems to be the best gear, the 71 runs 4.10's but his shift light is on for a while going out the back door. The 502's don't like more than 5800 rpms tops. We did add a 850 dp to the 71 to try it it went 11.86. I really like the ZZ502's the 3 I put in the Chevelles work flawless. The only draw back you have to purchase an oil pan. I recommend a Moroso or a Miloden.

Hey dave thanks for the great info it was very helpful.I see that the motors you installed were mostly stock. The upgrades Idid were the aluminum heads have 2.30 valves installed with a mild port job I also installed a crane 610 lift hydraulic roller cam with a edelbrock air gap manifold and a 850 speed demon so I think I should be around the numbers that you told me by the way the heads are the stock gm aluminum

dave i just had a buddy leave from my house and hes trying to tell me that ther is no way a stock 502 can run a 11.90 out the box i believe it can ive been doing a lot of research and thats about the average. he thinks that because they have a camaro with a 496 that has pro top line 320 heads a good size cam he really has some good stuff in the car but its only been 11.70 at his best so now i have finish my car and show him.

Ok , I am no crate engine specialist for sure. I don't like to push the ZZ502's too much but they just plain work good. The faster one in the 68 Chevelle , is because of the minor upgrades we did. The performer RPM air gap is a better manifold than the stock piece. We are using an AED 850 HO, on it also, its better than the 850 vacuum secondary that comes with the stock ones. So far the best gear has been 3.73's with a 28" tall tire. The 3000 stall is also what we use. There is better torque converters out there, but he is getting away with using a B&M Holeshot. I forgot to mention another customer, I don't want to say cheaped out but he bought the ZZ454. He's trying for 11's too, his best 12.0's. In the hot humid weather its been going 12.1- 12.2's. Like Mike said above, its traction and suspension. The ZZ502 makes great torque down low, half the battle is getting it hooked up and to launch. The 60 fts on the 68 are in the high 1.5's. The other 2 guys are right their too, closer to 1.63-1.65.

Dave, great info on your first hand experience with these motors.

The suspensions are really basic. Moroso trick rear coils, boxed stock rear control arms, with rubber bushings. We also use the Lakewood adjustable slapper bars. I think they are called traction/action. I know there is better stuff out there, UMI's stuff looks really nice, but what we are using works.

i want to build a 454, what is a good top end kit for a 454? im looking for heads & cam match. something like those top end kits that guarentee a certain hp. anybody have and experiance with these kits? i have a 69 chevelle, 4 spd muncie m22, 12bolt 355 rear gear, mild built small block ( for nowl:)) although, i did upgrade to the edelbrock rear (square tube) replacement bars rather than the flimsy stock bars, BIG difference! i think i might need the adjustable upper bars - i have quite a bit of wheel hop when i try to light'em up? any ideas on that also? thanks guys! this is a street car pump gas is a must! im looking to run in the 12's.
