It is amazing the interest we have had from new guys and a few others for 70 cars, especially 4 speeds. There has been a flood of pics and for the most part judged to be overpriced for what they were. We seem to be basing our opinions on the current market but this car may go against that just because of interest and demand. Most of these cars may bring that extra money as people tire of looking and settle.

I understand the allure of the 70SS but not the paying of a 25% + premium over an identical 69. Especially the new guys. In the range of their budgets,$20-30K, it is going to take the upper end to find what they want. In doing so they are letting a lot of nice other year model cars in the very low end slip by them.

This is where the unscrupolous sellers cash in.

I don't fully understand the mistique of the 70 either.

I was looking for a 70 when I bought my 69 as it was too good a deal to pass up. Next time around I found my 70.

Not only was 70 the pinnacle year, but it's the most hyped.

You can't walk by a book store's magazine rack and not see a Red 70 plastered on car magazine covers.

Walk into an autozone and see a Red 70 on the Flowmaster muffler boxes.

Classic car book covers....

They're everywhere.

And your right, "Demand" is a strong factor in determining worth.

While an educated buyer may choose a well done 69 over an inflated 70, the owner of the 70 can simply bide his time and another buyer will eventually purchase.

People want 70 Chevelles. And that drives up the value in the simple equasion of supply and demand.

I have owned a 1970 Chevelle SS in one way or another for over the last 20 years.
I don't understand the "mystique" thing ;)

I always liked the 70s. Way before they were hot. Sold both my 70s last year because everytime I took one or the other out someone wanted to Buy them. Now with my 69s Eh. Actually I like all years, some not as much as others. Would enjoy having another Crocus Yellow 65 Malibu SS with a 427 and a 4 Speed.

It's strange how our minds are swayed by magazines, pictures and 'bench racing, over a number of years. It seems that we're seeing a new generation of Chevelle fans that are choosing a car based on second hand experiences while the 40+ crowd has had real life experiences with the cars that are coveted the most by individuals that own them.

There's no doubt that the 70 is the best looking of the 4th generation A body Chevelles. So, the 70's are a great car to buy if you are a speculator or a flipper. If I was into making money, I would buy & sell only 70 Chevelles.

My son and daughter are arguing over who will inherit mine. My son and his new wife bought a honda so it looks like the daughter gets it.;)

i think a lot of it has to do with it being the peak HP year and the LS6 hysteria. the '70 olds and buick cars (not sure about pontiacs) are worth more as well. difference in the olds/ buick seems to be the '71's go for about the same money and in chevelles there's a big drop. maybe folks don't like the single headlight thing.

not to blow this all out of proportion, it's still just a small premium for '70's over some other good years until you're talking about a factory 454 car.

As you say, it's "good as gold" connection to the Muscle Car days. They are icons. It's image.

Lot's of car examples and even more in general out there too, like why there are no Kia's parked in the members lot at the country club.

If and when you see one come to auction, everyone runs to the stage like their pants were on fire and they're peeing all over themselves trying to put it out.

But it's that kind of stuff that keeps the sport/hobbie/demand alive.

That's exactly why I've always steered away from the 1970 model Chevelles. You can get a much better deal on the 68,69 and 71 and especially the 72's (which for some reason don't bring nearly as much as the other years). When I bought my 71 ragtop 21 years ago the price difference wasn't bad between it and a 70 ragtop. I might be biased but I'd just as soon have a 71 as a 70 - price difference or not. Love the 68's also.

That's also why I steer away from the Yenko's, COPO's and Motions.....

Way better deal with the 70 SS's. :D

John, are you not getting much interest in the '67? It's a great looking car! Don't get discouraged.

I like to 70 the best because when I was 15 my ex-brother in law told me about a 1970 chevelle this guy have for cheap. I went over to this guys house, the car was in ok shape, black on black sweep dash with the non funnction 66 hood.(back in 85') The car had a slip and slide trans and slot type wheels with a 327 in it(rod knock was free)

I loved the look of the car so I bought it, worked on it and put a set of cragers on it, a 350 that ran strong, a turbo 350 trans and I was on my was to freedom by the time I was 16.

one day driving 2 co-worker waitresses in the front seat of the chevelle:thumbsup: I drove over a HUGE gully or dip, bottomed out the car, ruined the frame and that was the end of it for that car..........

got Married bought a house and lived fairly happy until........back in 2001 I spotted a 1970 black chevelle in this guys fix it shop. I stop in and its a 70ss with a red interior, he is selling, $8500 he wants and I buy it for 7700 not done but in decent shape. NOW I AM HOLE AGAIN:yes:

Mac I took it to Dallas yesterday to a friend of mine who is a collector car dealer. He sold my 69 Z-28 for me in 96 for more than I could have ever got myself. He had one guy look yesterday and another today who made an offer close to what I could live with. There are 4 more coming thru Saturday. Did not get much response here but only mentioned in the members section. He has enough contacts to get it done without too much pain on my part.

The 69 will be next. Everything being equal if it was a 70 it would have been gone immediately. I have some interest and am in no hurry. It is a tremendous opportunity for the money but all the live interest seems to be for a 70.

Thanx for asking.

This is an example of how some people get crazy with the 70 chevelles. My first car was a 70 malibu back in 79, and I've had about 10 of them in some shape or form (SS or malibus) I've always liked the double headlights and rear bumper versus the 71-72's. But this guy in this ad seems nuts. The car has never been washed, but shines like no tomorrow. Give me a break.

I can't complain about the 70's myself. I've had a few and improved them to a certain degree. When I finally part with them and move on to the next project, I've yet to be disappointed. I have TC to thank for that. If there's one thing I've learned here, it's how to spend the money on these cars in all the right places. To me it's all about originality or at least looking original for the non-numbers cars. The more original, the less work for the new owner and it's a pleasant sale.

Guess I am against the trend on this one. I dont care for the double headlights of the 70. Love the single 71 72 head lights and the 68 69. I dont let someone else pressure me into my tastes. Dont get me wrong though, I would own any year 66-72 chevelle just know what I prefer.

But really, no '69 will be "identical"... Remember, the body style is radiacally different; bulging fenders, the overhanging hood, the more prominent hood "dome" not to mention cowl induction/hood-pin option, hood/deck stripes (if looking at "factory" issued). Plus, as mentioned, 1970 was the pinnicle of performance for the Chevelle. That near-mythical name, LS6, or just SS 454, probably draws alot in...

I know personally, I love the 1970 body style, but not so much the 1969.

Along similar lines, but I think even more interesting, is WHY 69s are worth much more than 68s; same basic body style with very minor stylistic changes.

Or why 70's are worth more than 71/72s; again, same basic body style, with only relatively minor changes...

Or 67 suposedly worth more than 66s...

Or even WHY are clones so much less than "non-original motor" SS cars? Why do people want to find an original SS, even without the original engine, etc rather than buy a nice car thats either questionable or noted as a clone? To me, that makes NO sense. No sense, unless maybe you are in it as an investment...

For some reason, I have always liked the '66, the '68 and the '70. 66 and 68 probably because my brother had those two years... Or maybe something about the thinner taillights... When I found my '70, I firgured I'd probably "settle" for a 71 or 72, just because I didn't want to pay the "premium"... I also considered buying a '71/72 and swapping on 70 sheetmetal. The 71 grill began to grow on me as I looked, but still don't care for the 72 grill.

Don't get me wrong, 69 and 72 are still nice, just a few styling issues I don't care for as much.

Yeah I'm a Newbie but still want to throw in a vote for the 71-72 cars. Twin "Power Beam" headlights up front, four round taillights behind, what's not to like? ;)

Personally I like the 71 grille/parking light setup better, but that's offset by the 72 having the engine code in the VIN. Can't think of too many production cars better looking than a 71-72 SS, red with black stripes and a black vinyl top. Woohoo!

But then again I also like the Colonade cars, so what do I know

With prices like these. I should go and look for a 1970 now too. Someone got a pretty sweet deal on a nice 70 here.

I think that is it also, IMO. Don't get me wrong though, I do like the 70's. After all, it's my second favorite year for Chevelles :D

That's a nice looking car at a nice price. Thing that makes me sick is by the time I'm done with my 67 (if I ever am), I'll have at least that much $ into it and it won't be anywhere near as nice, and will only be a clone :(

I agree, my infatuation with the 70 Chevelle started the same way. My Grandmother bought a new Malibu in 70 and I loved it from day one. My parents bought it for a first car for me in 78 with 30,000 miles. I have had a love of Chevrolet's of all kinds all my life, funny thing is my Father worked at Ford Motor Co. for 38 years.

I think the 70 Chevelle is the most popular Chevelle for a couple reasons.
Highest horsepower offered for the model, styling, marketing and hype from the aftermarket manufacturers.

I am currently looking to purchase a 70 SS Convertible. NOM OK. Must be clean. Anyone here thinking of selling or know of one that maybe for sale please PM me. If I buy the car I will make it worth your trouble.

Thanks Chris

tony has some good points, things that i've always wondered about, especially the '68-'69 thing, that one has me confused all over the place. i started out looking at both '68's and '69's and quickly found out pretty much no one had any documentation on their '69's and i had to consider them clones for the sake of my purchase and ended up getting a '68.

as far as the '70's go, sure i would be happy to own one, i just liked the earlier years better. i can see the apeal, but it's almost getting the point of over-exposure, over-hype, over whatever. i still think most of the premium is the 454 and even though you could still get it in '71 and '72, it lost a lot of it's sizzle. otherwise the '71-'72 would be closer in price. i think the back ends are better looking in the '71-'72; the corvette looking round tail lights give it a little extra i think.

Cowl Induction hood w/ emblems that flips up and down every time you punch the throttle. Rear bumper pad. Dash with big round tach and speedometer that is surronded by little round gauges. Red w/ Black..Blue w/white..Black w/ white....oooh those stripes kill me. I could go on and on. Im 46, got married and went on my honeymoon in a 71 SS factory 454. Owned a 68 SS w/ 427. Had my 3 kids help wet sand and paint a 70 SS. Putting the finishing touches on a 69SS. Truth be told Im on ebay every other day looking for that next project. It will be a 1970 SS
I dont flip em I just love to work on them. Ask my wife.
Theres no question in my mind the 70 is the one to have.

I think the hype with the 70 is due to the LS6. My first car was a 70 Malibu, and for 10 years I have had my 71 SS, which I personally would rather have over a 70, even for the same price, but that is my opinion. I just love 71's, to me that 70-72 body style is timeless, add in the 4 round taillights, that sweet looking 71 grill and split parking lights and I am in heaven :) I love how all these people on ebay try to sell every type of 70 part and say its for an LS6, cracks me up.
