have acquired another 454 short block.friend of mine pulled it out of his 1/2 ton think its a 78,had broken timing chain he thought the motor was gone......i will try to give any useful info
i know its a bb 4 bolt but want to know if its a heavy duty block or anything special that will be able to hold some power and be reliable.
casting is 1006296.pistons have a small valve relief and a small dish in the center of the piston.cast crank.also did gm stamp the rods 1-8,
he says the motor is (virgin),from the chewed up nylon timing gear in the oil pan i think hes right.
thanx

The number as you typed it does not exist and the only number close to it is 10069286 which is a 1990-91 Mk IV 454 4-bolt. Certainly not a 1978. Check it out for the casting date and stamped code on the small machined semi-circular pad just above the center of the water pump.

there is a booger or a small casting flaw
on the casting # at the bellhousing mount
reads 1006*286
just to the side of the filter its stamped k23 445
both sides of the block stamped 74 in big numbers
and one side has gm logo
the stamp above the pump reads tjo4xxzo
so what do i have???desirable, good material???
i want to get started right away if this is a good platform...

Run the VIN past you local License Buearu(Sp?) b/c they or a Smog Station or SHP should be able to tell you IF they want to take the time?? Just be polite asking them..
I asked our SHP before I used my '75, 454, P/U motor as my core to make my 496 b/c I sure didn't want to get hit with a H-D block in my car come checking time b/c IT is flat illegal at the Federal Level to put a H-D motor in a car due to the Smog thing!!
And a H-D motor is just a designation if it isn't a tall deck'er b/c it is the vehicles weight that determines this!!
Like long, 12 pass. people hauling Vans over 8500(??) pounds and big UPS type Vans and 2.5 ton and larger gravel Dump-Trucks as well as School Busses sorta deal here..

PS, you can always deck the block and remove the VIN, then you motor is untraceable(Sp?)...
