Rays69chevelle Jul 16th, 08, 2:33 PM Im thinking about buying this 70 454 SS on Ebay. No docs., 4 speed, alum.head 454. Looks fairly clean, buyer said orig body panels. He wants $34k for it. What do you guys think? Anybody in the knoxville tennesee area that can look at it for me? Let me know. Thanks- Ray

chevelless1 Jul 16th, 08, 4:37 PM .....its got that cowl "flipper" hood
ToocoolZ28 Jul 16th, 08, 5:49 PM A lot of incorrect parts on that car, but it sure is pretty. It looks very nice but I wouldnt pay top dollar for it since there are NO docs or matching numbers.
Ron
704EVER Jul 16th, 08, 6:07 PM Agreed, lot of incorrect parts, stripes look crooked in one front picture. Take a look at one engine comparment picture, A arm, frame rail, PS box and steering shaft looked either untouched or rattle canned flat black. Seems about 8-10K high for this one.
69396ss Jul 16th, 08, 6:15 PM Man..... I wish I was a buyer right now. I paid $25K just for a real nice chassis and body and marginal "everything else" just a few years ago in a 454 Chevelle. I'd clone a nut and Bolt L89 with those Aluminum Heads already there. They're probably Edlebrock heads though.
So yeah...... get ready for some detailing.
ToocoolZ28 Jul 16th, 08, 6:37 PM looks like a small block steering shaft too.
Ron
Robinls5 Jul 16th, 08, 6:40 PM THAT is a PI$$ poor clone if I ever saw one.
My questions are WHY would you put a 396 rear end in a 454 car? Why would you remove the SS steering colum and install a Malibu Colum? Why would you remove the correct master cyl. and install one from Advance auto parts? Why would install a REPO dash housing with 71-72 WHITE gauges? Why not use a 1970 Fan Shroud? Why not use a 3947772 fan blade? SS wheel centers are repos. Why not just say " I have a nice "CLONE" for sale for $18.000. Or Just tell the truth!:noway:
Bob
69396ss Jul 16th, 08, 6:53 PM Well, we can't all have NOS matching castings and date codes on our clones Rob :D
I don't know if "piss Poor" would be a fair assesment, I've seen some in my day that would be a much better fit of that description. :D
Looks of "Average" detail to me.
Just throw some cash at it and all the little incorrect details simply disappear.
I'd focus on the frame and chassis as the foundation, everything else is just details.
Unfortunately, that Chassis does look to be "Spray Can" restored as Mike observed.
animal69 Jul 16th, 08, 7:47 PM Any body have their sound on when looking at that auction? It's a gen-u-wine She-veil.
Roberty Jul 16th, 08, 7:58 PM looks like a small block steering shaft too.
Ron
What's the difference between the small block and big block steering shafts, Ron? I didn't realize they were different. Is this true on all of the 68-72's?
Rays69chevelle Jul 16th, 08, 9:10 PM Wow..you guys sure are critical! But...i asked for your opinions. Im not llooking for a "numbers" car or even a super correct car. Im looking for a nice clean cruise night car. Any non original items could be corrected. The heads are GM aluminum heads according to the seller. I agree the car is priced a bit "high" at $34k..probably closer to $25k..i mean honestly where can you buy a reasonably clean 454 4 speed 70 chevelle SS clone for much less than that? Thanks- Ray:beers:
70ChevelleRagtop Jul 17th, 08, 1:43 AM That chassis paint job looks really suspect as others have said. Not a bad looking car, it just has the appearance that some corners were cut. I'd want some better quality photos of the undercarriage or better yet have someone take a look in person at the car.
anychevy Jul 17th, 08, 7:30 AM Im thinking about buying this 70 454 SS on Ebay.
Around 30k (seeing it's a dealer) if it all checks out be as nice in person as it looks in the pics.
Cars for sale with a "fresh as a daisy resto" bother me a little.
I wonder what hides beneath all that shiny paint which may surface later.
Get someone to check it out in person if you're really serious.
oldtimebaseballfan Jul 17th, 08, 10:55 AM As stated above, get someone to look at it in person. Also ask the seller what is the casting date on the engine.
Rays69chevelle Jul 17th, 08, 10:57 AM As stated above, get someone to look at it in person. Also ask the seller what is the casting date on the engine. Well im hoping to get someone to look at it in person for me as i cant get out there before auctions end. The engine is a 72-75 454 block according to seller. Honestly i dont believe this seller will go under 30k so i may end up passing on it. :beers:

Ray,
I am about 60 miles north of the car but would not be and expert about what to look for. I will call a couple of friends that are local to see if they know of someone that could look at it in person with a respected eye.

Nice-- After she says "she-velle" the best part is when she says it is painted" THE tuxedo black". Why do I get the feeling the voice on the ad sounds pretty much like the hick that was writing the ad!! Can you look at the car at - THE Wal-Mart?

Didn't sound like a hick to me, sounded like an automated voice reading text. Please define "hick" so we who are reading this (undoubtably a hick can read since you say that one can write) can decide if you have offended us or not.
Thanks

Don't take any offence, it is kinda funny that the automated voice makes it sound like that.
69396ss Jul 18th, 08, 9:52 AM I did notice that the automated voice "Twanged" in a "southern fashion" when she said... Che-Velle"
Dean Jul 18th, 08, 10:28 AM Sounded just like most all people in Tennessee say Chevelle to me.
69396ss Jul 18th, 08, 12:11 PM What was strange though, is the rest of the Dialog didn't sound like that.
No Drawl.
