What's a 400 engine? What does the # refer to? Any input is appreciated.

400 refers to the cubic inch displacement of the engine. It is the size of the engine. Just like a 350 is a three hundred and fifty cubic inch engine.

Sam is exactly right. As opposed to transmissions where a 400 is a model #. The 400 is one iteration of the 350 small block family.
