: Rear spring/shock options

Presently my 70 chevelle has old air shocks & stock rear springs. I want to lift car so my tires don't rub, things are just too close. I know coil over shocks & tubbing would be the ideal setup but funds are limited at this time. I've replaced the upper & lower control arms and torsion bar w/ BMR units. Added a panhard bar to limit side to side movement of the rear.

What would be the best way to maintain height and end up with a excellent setup that will hookup at the strip. The options are too many for my limited expertise; air shocks, air bags, coil over shocks, drag shocks, single/double adj. shocks, new springs. I need help!!

All help will be greatly appreciated, Bob J:confused:

I used a stock malibu wagon spring and a hd shock.
Air shocks are probably the worst set up you can use on these cars!! JMHO

Bob, what's you're 1/4 mile performance level? With tire technology today you should be able to run a rim and tire combo that will fit the wheel well of the '70 chevelle with no interference while providing excellent performance results and maintain stock ride height not to mention keeping you're drive line in phase.

You should use spacers or have custom springs wound to get the height you want, don't rely on air shocks, bags or taller springs from heavier vehicles. It's important to keep the same spring rate as you add height, otherwise you'll sacrifice weight transfer and therefore traction along with it.

I've decided to go with coil over shocks for both the front and rear with QA1 double adj shocks. Thanks for your comments. Bob

If you plan to run Coilovers on the rear. Make sure you install them on the cross bar that gets welded between the frame rails. Don't install them in the stock shock mounts, The upper shock mounts will not handle the stress.

Adding the wagon springs didnt really raise the height it simply stiffened the ride (not as much travel)
I also bought custom 15x10 wheels to run a wider tire without rubbing issues! no issues with lost traction and 0 wheel hop? mid to low 12`s in the 1/4 with a sb

Hey Tom your Chevelle looks great and is turning respectable times. Your right I just want the top of the tire to be even with the edge of the fender well.
