I have a 70 Chevelle SS; At the present it does not have a heart, however, it is awaiting the 454 Big Block I am building. The car currently has 4.56 gears w/posi, Southside traction bars, powerglide tranny, and 10" street slicks. I am looking for a combination for a 454 saturday cruiser which can be driven to the track and back home on occassions. I am not looking to go broke to put a combination together, however, I can restrict myself to homecooked meals. looking for high horses and torque...on a reasonable budget...

Then a few questions:
Is the PG a built race trans or some pile of crap outa some car?
Is there already a converter?
Pump gas?
4.56 not exactly cruising gear....how far is the track?
How about a budget? What 454 parts do you have?
o If the crank needs turning and you need to bore the engine, a stroker kit is probably the most bang for the buck.
o If the bores are good and you have forged pistons already, cheaper to stay 454.
Gotta tell me more
Scouts Out!
Edit: Forgot, WELCOME TO TEAM CHEVELLE!

The 4.56 gears are fairly big for a cruiser, however, it will only be driven to the Saturday car shows; these are approx. 5 miles from my home and the drag strip about 20 miles from my home. At the present the PG is stock w/o converter and will need to be rebuilt; I am thinking of a 2500 to 3500 stall and no parts have been bought for the 454 at this time. I am leaning more towards a roller motor, but to get some drive out of it maybe a stout hydraulic rebuild. The engine has .030 bore and I do not plan to run NOS.

Most important question is: what are your ET goals?

Ditch the 'glide. Sounds like your car will be too heavy for it to be useful. Th400 in my opinion. Don't think you need all those gears to go fast. A big block has torque-o-plenty. It WILL turn the gears. I'd go with something a little taller, like 3.90's or even 3.73's. 20 miles with 4.56's will get old real fast. A 10:1 big block with a mid .500 lift cam, decent intake and carb, headers and dual exhaust. That will get you where you want to go. Unless you want to get absolutely nuts with the thing, keep it simple. It'll be more fun to cruise and enjoy if you're not tuning it or fixing something every time you take it out. It'll still stomp most stock cars out there today.
One more thing: NEVER drive your car to the track. Eventually, somjething will break and leave you stranded. Always take a trailer when you're going to beat you car unmercifully.
