70 SS 396 bored to 408 oversize valves, mild porting,10:1 CR, Edelbrock air gap,1 7/8" headers, Holley 750, Flowmasters, roller tips, 3.91 gears. mainly a street driver, cruise night car. Has Crane H296-2 which is 236/246. Car is very sluggish below 3500, and then goes fine.
Vacum is 10 at idle. My mechanic says this is far too much cam and suggested less duration. I have played with Dyno 2000 and best results seem to be Comp Cams Solid 268, torque is WAY up from 2000 to 4500 and even peak HP is up over the Crane. I dont mind the solids as adjustments will be minimal, I put 1200 miles on car last year. Any suggestions on cam, and is this Dyno 2000 program in the ballpark

BillyB,

I have the same setup, but running a 400 Turbo w/ 3000 stall converter. I must have ran 50 cam profiles through DD2000. Based on the DD2000 program time and having just ran a COmp 280H in a 396, I am sure that a 230@.050 cam is about right for this engine size. You could run more but the Compression will have to go up. I had put my 408BBC together with 2 different cams in mind - A. Comp LS6 Nostaglia Hydraulic 229/236 @ .050 .535/.529 112 LSA ; B. Reed Cams 282/286 228/232 @ .050 .544/.551 110 LSA. I am going to go with the Reed 282/286. A solid would add 8 - 10 degrees to these numbers to cover the valve lash.

I would think that the XS268 would be an excellent choice, considering that it is smaller at .050" than the Crane hyd cam that you have. Remember that when you consider a solid, you need to subtract around 8 degrees per .050: both intake and exhaust. It should boil the tires from a dead stop to as far as you want!

Have you looked at the Crane 278? It's 222/234 with 114 lsa. With your gears I think it would be fine.
