: Please recommend a fuel pressure gauge

My Mallory screw in type bounces like crazy at 9-10 psi. Is this normal fuel pressure for a bone stock mechanical fuel pump or is it a bad gauge?. The gauge is new. I'm going to install a regulator to keep it at 5-6 psi.

Jim,
I have never been a big fan of the small screw in gauges other than for "looks". I have seen them vary all over the place. Have tried everything from the cheapest to the best liquid filled. One of my customers has 2 of them on a Pro Street type car, both liquid filled gauges, both brand new, one reads 6 lbs, the other reads 10 ... both reading the same fuel log. Go figure. Mechanical pumps will tend to pulse the gauge. Also, the reading will be different at idle with the float needle closed, compared to open throttle under load when the carb is flowing a bunch of fuel. I would get a good 4" mechanical vacuum/fuel pressure combination gauge at the parts store and use it first. Then put your small gauge back and just use it as a reference. If it runs good, leave it alone !
Only other choice is to use a good Autometer gauge with the isolator so you can mount it in the car.
Have fun !

Thanks Bill. I'm getting a fuel pressure tester this weekend for that reason. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
