Big question is what will drag radials do for me here at this point? The car really charges hard toward the end of the eighth making me think it may do better than the 1/8 to 1/4 calculator predicts. We hashed that over last month.
Thanks for your imput. ps I went from a 600cfm to a 750 cfm edelbrock performer and the afr heads seemed to really breath harder through 3000-5500 rpm. I stayed with the edelbrock since all the rigging matched.

If you're looking for performance I'd lose the edelbrock carburetor, great street carb and I'm sure there are some might be able to make one perform pretty good. 60ft time is everything in a heavy car,are you spinning?,the stickier the tires the better,My 60ft times ranged from 1.67-1.70 last sunday on drag radials. You do not have enough gear for your smallblock.

Forget about street radials..use either a DOT "cheater" slick or one of the drag radials, and watch your 60 ft. drop

List some more specs on your motor, like compression ratio as close as you know it to be, cam specs, and what is your timing set at? How tall are your tires too? What brand converter is that? Better tires will probably help for sure, but also there may be a noticeable weak spot in the combo(maybe not thought, but it helps to know).

motor specs for the 383 is 10:4:1 compression
runs on unleaded.
220in 230 ex hyd flat tappet cam
tires are 25.5 in dia.
torque convertor was an obscure brand that cme with the trans when overhauled and upgraded.
timing is 35deg total
really just wondering what gains fellas got with a tire change only. or what brand everyday radial has the best launch.
Thanks

Sounds like your combo is fine.
You need sticky tires-period
You can use BFG drag radials
Let me give you an example..my car will 60 ft. 2.20's or so (or worse) spinning on street radials and leaving soft..I bolt on DOT slicks,I get down to the 1.8 range and hook hard, with no other changes, and pick 4 to 5 tenths in my ET
Don't waste your time with street radials if you're serious about getting the best ET.

I agree that the motor combo sounds to be solid enough that I would not mess with it(right now at least). Tires are a first priority. With the setup you described, toruqe and throttle respons should be pretty heavy right at the drop of the hammer, so Im sure there is some tirespin present even if it doesnt quite feel like it. I would not worry about the 3.42 gears so much cause at most, that motor combo would not benefit with much more than a 3.73 gear and changing from a 3.42 to a 3.73 gear isnt quite worth the cost cause the difference will be minimal. Now if you had 2.73 gears, it would be a different story. If anything, when you swap the tires, go with one that is just a little shorter(only if that is even necessary) and that would simulate the gear swap being that it would be such a small difference. Finally, if you did feel the need to make further changes, Id probably consider a converter swap. As long as you plant the tires to the ground, a well built converter will do better things for your 60 footers than the average obscure brand does.
I used to run 13s in the 1/4 with slicks or street tires and my car would never hook up. I put on a set of ladder bars from lakewood and it put me in the 12s easy. If that is not your daily driver thin I would think about putting on a holley it well make a differnce.
