I have a 9:1 496 BBC, Flattops, Ray Franks 320 Profiler heads, Flow approx. 288/198 @ .400", 379/250 @ .600", 395/261 @ .700". Ported and flow matched Vic Jr dominator intake with 1050 HP dominator.

I currently have a Comp 308 magnum solid roller 262 @ .050", .652 lift, 110 deg lobe separation single pattern cam. It is a cast core cam and has worn out on the lobe ramps, so I need to replace it and might as well look for more power if possible.

Exhaust consists of 2" Hooker Super Comp headers, 3-1/2" full length oval exhaust with an X-pipe and Spintech mufflers.

Drivetrain is as follows: 5 speed manual trans with 3.28, 2.13,1.57,1.24, and 1:1 gearing. I am running a 3.89 rearend gear with 32" tires and using 1-4 gears at the dragstrip and 5 th gear for cruising. Effective gear ratios are as follows: 12.56, 8.28, 6.10, and 4.82.

I never dynoed the engine, but at 3800 lbs. race weight the car ran 10.80`s @ 125 mph without much tuning with a crappy 1.6 60' time.

The engine pulls hard past 7500 rpm and that`s not a problem as the bottom end is all good Callies stuff.

Thanks, Brent

I would recomend the same duration but more lift. Min .720 Net(minus lash) if you valvesprings can take it.

Brent,

I have a new VooDoo series we are getting ready to dyno test, this time in a 496. The biggest one I would run is the 285/293, which is of course 285/293 at .020, 255/263 at 050, 178/185 at .200, .680/.680 valve lift, and 110 LSA. It has soft ramps for long life on the street, and Lunati does NOT offer the cast core. All our VooDoo roller cores are 8650 with the cast gear 'EverWear' option. We will be testing against the XR290, so I'll let you know what it does.
If you want to run it through a computer program, the numbers at .020 are 36-69-81-32, intake on 104 ICL.....

Thanks for the replies. Harold, when are you going to be testing that cam grind? What would you expect the powerband of that cam to be in my engine? Do you believe that that duration would provide the best dragstrip acceleration, or are you weighing in streetability also?

If anyone would like to run my engine through a computer dyno program, I would appreciate it. I don`t have one myself.

Thanks again, Brent

Hi Brent,
See you fixed the headflow number. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
That makes more sense,,
That cam should make peak power about 63-6400 & peak torque about 4600 with your engine. It will pull much further though.
I would expect very close to 650HP on an honest dyno even at 9.1 if your head flow numbers are correct. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Harold, have you dyno tested that 285 / 293 grind yet? When do you expect to?
Thanks, Brent

Brent,

As soon as I can get a MK VI steel billet core, we're going to dyno test a 496 at Bowling Green with a couple of new VooDoo solid roller cams. We hope to test within a week or so, and I am going up there next Tuesday.
Your CC 308 Magnum is 176° at .200, my 285/293 is 178°/185° at the same point. The VooDoo's much shorter, and more assymetric, seat timing will pick up intake port velocity for faster filling, as well as more high-lift duration. It also gives a much longer power stroke, putting more torque into the crank.
Give me another week or 2, and I'll let everyone know what our 496 did.......

The cam that UD Harold suggests will probably perform better than the one you have now. With a 32" tire your car seems to be woefully undergeared. It's apparent your car must be tubbed in order to get that much tire in there. My son has a good friend that has a similarly tired car and until recently he had a 3.73 gear in it with a 481" BB. He just went to a 4.10 and the car picked up a couple of tenths (10.65 @ 124.89 MPH). A little more gear would be beneficial for you and will definately help the E.T.'s. The best before the extra gear was a 10.80 at 123 MPH.

Thanks UD Harold, I`m ready to start assembling my shortblock now, so hopefully the dyno testing goes as planned. What kind of lead time would you expect for a Mark 4 cam? I`ll be running Isky Redzone`s also, what would you recommend for a valvespring, so I can get the heads ready to go. Gonna put a ton of street miles on this, so I want a long lasting spring.

Harold S. , with a 3.27 first gear in the trans the car launches pretty well. I`m going to add an antiroll bar and some good shocks this year. I might change gearing when I get the chassis dialed in. It sure was fun cruising at 85 mph. on the power tour last spring though!
