: 1971 Chevy Malibu 4-dr Sedan
dougyfresh Jul 13th, 08, 4:56 PM At Iola this year for the ultimate garage give away they are giving away the above mentioned car. Well when i was up there earlier this weekend i went to look at it and its in pretty good shape exterior is good just needs a little interior work. it says it has a 350 with a th350 backin it up but its a nice 4 door otherwise worth about 8500. what do you guys think?
Heres the link to the site

camarofreak Jul 13th, 08, 7:05 PM i dont think i would pay 8500 for any 4 door of any kind?? JMHO
Dean Jul 13th, 08, 7:10 PM what do you guys think?
I think 8,500. would be about 4,500. too much.
depley Jul 13th, 08, 7:38 PM i dont think i would pay 8500 for any 4 door of any kind?? JMHO
Ah but you should look at mine!
camarofreak Jul 13th, 08, 7:48 PM Ah but you should look at mine!
why would i pay 8500 for that when i got this for 4800???

depley Jul 13th, 08, 10:18 PM So you only have $4500 in that, paint and all? How long ago did you buy it?
I would say what does yours have that mine doesn't? Why should it be worth less when it has 4 doors? It still costs the same to have them painted, the wheels hood engine are all the same.
dougyfresh Jul 14th, 08, 12:22 AM the estimate was not done by me if you look on the website that shows the estimates for all of the things that you win with the car i was jus wondering wat you guys thought about a publication giving away a 4 door chevelle
camarofreak Jul 14th, 08, 1:30 AM So you only have $4500 in that, paint and all? How long ago did you buy it?

I wasnt trying to put down your car!!
I got the 71 pretty much as seen in pic i added the white stripes, tires and wheels.
bought it 2-3 yrs ago.
i just prefer a 2 door and to be honest a 2 door will always bring more than a 4 door just a fact of the old car game?
you are perfectly correct about the costs but down the road trying to sell or recoop cash whom would come out ahead?
My 71 had a weak 350/350 when purchased but i had a 383,built 350 from another camaro i sold to toss in it (motors and trans are also cost similar from 2 or 4 door)
since all the changes i made my insurance reappraised it and now has it covered for an agreed value of 17,500 cant do that with a 4 door thats all!
camarofreak Jul 14th, 08, 1:47 AM I get that same you paid how much!! from everyone but the fact is they are out there just gotta wade through the hundreds of rust piles of bs and the i just saw one on BJ sell for 50g!! guys.
when i bought it it had 15x7 black rallies(no caps or rings) and a greasey 350 (the owner told me it was a 307?) interior other than the carpet was mint!
I buy cars for the condition of the body only!! Never for that fresh 427 that usually turns out to be a fresh painted 396 with 50k miles or more. A mistake i see hundreds of car nuts make daily!
so i paid 4800 for a nice clean rustfree fresh painted body for a great foundation to start with.
I found it on ebay and not a single bid was made on it at a starting price of 4500 and i called the guy the day the auction ended and bought it the next day. he wanted 5000 and i had 4800 cash with me and he sold it. I bet i looked at 400 or more 70-72 chevelles before buying this one and 95% were hacked up rusted piles wanting 7g or more!!
Sorry didnt mean to rant i just get going and!!!
Chevelle_Nut Jul 14th, 08, 8:16 AM Hagerty has covered my 4 door for $16K replacement. I like my 4 door as much as I like my 2 door. Again, any object is only worth as much as someone wants to pay for it.
As the 2 doors dry up and become out of the price range of the average person 4 doors and wagons will become more and more popular. 4 doors are getting harder to find too because they have been chopped for parts.
Dean Jul 14th, 08, 8:48 AM Can't really compare coupe prices with 4 door prices, NOT that there's anything wrong with a 4 door EXCEPT the resale value.
Parts cost the same to re-do one and some stuff isn't available but when it's time to sell, not many interested buyers = lower price.
animal69 Jul 14th, 08, 10:09 AM The official rules says:"1) 1971 Chevy Malibu 4-dr Sedan provided by Country Classic Cars. Approximate Retail Value ("ARV") $6,550."
Where do you get $8500?
And Country Classics overprices their cars by at least 50%!
dougyfresh Jul 14th, 08, 11:15 AM my bad i read too fast for my own good you guys know how teenagers get when they see something they want they seem to skip over the real deals. i just read it too fast and got the 8550 my bad sorry

your telling me your insurance has an agreed value on a 4 door in primer of 16k??? i find that real hard to believe??
BillsCamino Jul 14th, 08, 12:16 PM I like my 4 door as much as I like my 2 door.
 I agree!
Chevelle_Nut Jul 14th, 08, 2:33 PM your telling me your insurance has an agreed value on a 4 door in primer of 16k??? i find that real hard to believe??
Agreed upon value. The car will be back from paint in 2 weeks and back together in August. Look up the value of a 4 door on NADA, it will suprise you.
camarofreak Jul 14th, 08, 3:55 PM Nada is not a realistic price guide unless you buy your classics at Barret Jackson.
i have a 350hp 327 4 speed 68 corvette convertible that NADA states the average value (which is what i would consider it in) is 46,290!! i bought it for 12,500 and i see tons of them for sale in the 15-25g range constantly.. Not even close to real world prices in my opinion. it states low value of 29g and high of 71g
Chevelle_Nut Jul 14th, 08, 5:06 PM True but the insurance companies go by NADA. I have about that much in the car so I am glad I can get coverage for it.
animal69 Jul 14th, 08, 6:24 PM True but the insurance companies go by NADA.
Insurance companies have their own black book they use and bears no resembalance to the NADA guide. Go ask your agent how much you would get if your daily driver was totaled, then compare it with NADA.:noway:
dogsridewith Aug 14th, 08, 5:08 AM The 4 doors got run into the ground/rusted out as utility vehicles. A lot of two doors were hobby/dating cars right from the start, and most got better storage and treatment. (Grandma's last cars can be real low miles and garage kept, but these seem to come 2 or 4.) Then the 4 doors also got stripped and junked for parts for 2 doors.
From horse carriages until recently, two doors would be the sports cars, but something changed, I think, with the ricer acceptance and modding of 4-door cars, and the Subaru factory car--WRX.
Four door cars have 4 inch more wheelbase, but not much higher weight. Bench seats and rear doors are great for a dogs-in-back-only rule.

brother and Buffy at orchard I'm pruning. Trailer to save interesting 8-year grown "watersprouts" to make a fence or something. Hitch is no-drill, from period, with box, describing use for this car.
speedyy Aug 14th, 08, 5:49 AM As for me... I love mine, but at a whole different point of view.
I've wanted a an American car since I was 8 years old and I saw a Huge pink '54 cadillac in front of our village's city hall, I was so darn impressed that by then I figured out some cars were built to look good instead of being efficient.
You gotta know this takes place in Europe, at a time the road was filled with Opel Kadetts, Ford Escorts, Volkswagen Golfs, Honda Civics and BMW 3-series.
Now... 19 years later I dare to take the step and started with a small budget, some guy who has a garage in a barn offered the 4 door Chevelle I own now on the internet, at a for me decent price.
I did it low budget because my thoughts were that it might bring difficult mechanical systems and passible very hard to find parts, but this bodystyle looks just what i wanted.
It turned out to be totally opposite, and with this purchase I actually did buy something quite rare, as it later proved to be an Antwerp, Belgium Assembled car, first known Antwerp built Chevelle on the net, but that's not important to me.
It's my introduction in American cars, and after little practicing i'm actually surprised how it handles.
It's a hobby, i don't care about the resale value because it will always be cheaper then owning a new car and see the value drop every month by $1000's.
All my friends love my car, it even brings them joy just to take a look at it, how much better can it get? :)
And of course.... with all 2 doors Malibu/SS/clones the 4-door is already getting quite rare to find.
The 4-door is something different, that's already a reason to buy it, just like the 65SS 6 cyl's.
depley Aug 14th, 08, 1:13 PM As I see it I have a chevelle. It has one thing most don't, 2 extra doors! For me those doors are nice to have, much easier to take people along. Now I will be changing the bench seat to buckets soon enough, when my wife drives my knees bother my chin. But it is also nice when you pull into a parking lot and you can open the door withut worry of the ars next to you.
Chevelle_Nut Aug 14th, 08, 1:33 PM I haven't posted it yet but 69 4 door SS Malibu 9C1 :D is now back together, painted and roadworthy. I drove it legally on the road for the first time this past weekend. This weekend it goes to get an alignment and an A/C charge. I am already getting looks and thumbs up. As soon as the rear door panels are finished I will load the family in it and off we will go.
To me 4 doors and wagons are good looking cars. Don't get me wrong, I love my 2 door. I know I will never get the investment out of the 4 door that I have put in it but that is not the point of the hobby, I am in it to have fun.
buddyholly Aug 14th, 08, 6:09 PM I really like my 4 door way more than my 2 door...um, oh yea, I don't have a 2 door...
It is quite interesting they are giving away a 4 door Chevelle. Kinda like they were giving away whatever they had laying around...
flashflood1951 Aug 17th, 08, 3:01 PM I like my 4 door as much as I like my 2 door. Again, any object is only worth as much as someone wants to pay for it.

Amen!
I could have purchased and nice 2-door coupe at a car show for less than I have in my 67 Sport Sedan. Its doesn't matter what the cars worth or if there is a buyer. I's mine and I love it!
See you on the road...
Dean Aug 17th, 08, 7:38 PM Cool story Mike

flashflood1951 Sep 3rd, 08, 8:11 AM Thanks Dean!
and the story continues...
PaPa Johns 77 Sep 3rd, 08, 4:43 PM Thank Dean for posting that link!:)
Mike, a great story! Thanks for sharing with everyone! It does tend to inspire a person to see anothers trials and tribulations!
Great looking car!
flashflood1951 Sep 3rd, 08, 8:27 PM Johnny:
Trials & Tribulations are putting it mildly! The story continues with the issues in the interior. There are a lot of things that are different in the interior of a 67 Malibu 4 door hardtop. It's longer inside so OPGI 4 door sedan carpet is too short. The door panels are different. The glass is different. The door pillar moldings can't be found so I'm making some. There are many so called experts that don't know the differences. I have to admit I didn't know the difference either when I bought it years ago now, but I do now.
The car still attracts a crowd! I got invited to a Cruise-in tomorrow in our downtown. I had no idea a 67 Malibu 4 door hardtop (sport sedan) would be so much fun.
Cruisin...
Scotch Sep 4th, 08, 2:03 AM A couple of guys have said "four doors and wagons" - but I don't think they should necessarily be joined. I'm into wagons (obviously) but I geniunely feel wagons are more desirable (both now and in the future) than comparable 4-doors, and also that they're not necessarily pursued by the same kind of buyer.
Are they being described together because they both have four doors, or do the majority feel they're worth about the same? Realizing this is the 'wagons and four doors' forum, I'm only asking because this thread was specifically abotu a four-door car and its value, and I just think there's still a difference in them.

Chris R Sep 4th, 08, 3:41 AM I know of 2 4 doors that have been for sale locally for over a year now. Both with prices over 6 grand. One is a 71 4 door coupe. The other is a traditional 4 door 1972 4 door sedan. They just dont sell very well once they start getting over 4 or 5 grand. Just like that super nice blue 69 4 door that was recently on ebay. Not even one bid with it starting at 5K.

My appraiser used the The Old Car guide and has valued mine $6,600. So yes, it is possible.
cash022 May 18th, 09, 3:29 PM Hi all, interesting comments both pro and con.
But the fact is that G.M made all of these models for a specific niche.
Lets all just be thankful for :
A) That they made them in the first place.
and
B)They haven't been Crushed.
I bought Mine in 97 with 49000 miles on her for $2300.00 (Canadian), From a little old lady.....true story.
She is 1 of 504 made for Canada and now has 97000 miles.
I replaced the 6 banger ( a 350 LT1 out of a 73 Vette) last November, and exhaust , but still have to paint her.
For me price is a non issue as I am the second owner of this car and is and will always be a part of my family, and the dogs love it too.

bikeron Oct 15th, 09, 7:44 PM I paid $100 for mine back in 1979. It was Grandmas car. 4 door no posts. Insured for 20K (a little too low).
For all the crap 4 doors get I still don't see any two doors on track days (road race course). I did see some at the West Coast drag meet at Sacto Raceway this year though.
If you go to the web link below you can see some track pictures..it is good for camping and carrying two Mtn Bikes and two road bikes... the A/C works fine and it makes people vomit when they go for rides with me on the track.:D
Why a 4 door? Because no one expects any performance from a 4 door!
Thanks for alerting to this thread Brian.
Sleeper!
Do you know what this back seat is good for?:D

bdc1013 Oct 18th, 09, 10:04 PM im only one sponsor away from being at the track with a two door!
4-door Chevelle Apr 19th, 10, 2:01 PM I also just put in a car seat for my 2 year old grandson as he LOVES riding in PaPa's Chevelle!

My 4dr can't even get any interest at $2500, everyone wants my 2dr.
4-door Chevelle Apr 21st, 10, 8:22 AM I am actually looking for another 4-door as mine is borderline rust bucket junk.
