: BB intake that will fit under stock 66 hood?
swtlou Jul 15th, 04, 8:44 PM Hello everyone ,I have a problem. My engine builder I came up with a combo for my 66 SS396.
And here is what we came up with.
396 .30 over
edelbrock RPM aluminum heads pt# EDL-60459
TRW 10.5 to 1 pistons pt# TRW-L2242F30
Comp cams roller cam 288 intake /288 exhaust rpm range 2200 to 6500
pt#CCA-11-692-8 and all roller drive train
MSD pro-billet distributor pt#MSD-85551
AED 750 carb from Advanced Engine Design.
The problem came when he wanted to use an edelbrock RPM Air-Gap intake. I looked up the specs and found that this intake does not fit under the stock hood of 65-67 chevelles. graemlins/angry.gif
That is in the rpm range that we were looking for. Any thoughts on this problem?
Also what do you guys think of this combo minus the intake problem.
slicksty7 Jul 15th, 04, 9:11 PM I would say that if this is the combo that you want then the only resonable choice would be to go with a cowl hood. I had a 67 years ago with the same problem so I used the stock winters intake it worked out fine power wise. Good luck! ;)
hotrod_06010 Jul 15th, 04, 9:11 PM We just gor done building my buddies 454 in his 66 ss. The airgap WILL fit. I will try to get him to post a pic for you to see. graemlins/beers.gif
swtlou Jul 15th, 04, 9:30 PM thanks a picture would be great
bottlerat Jul 15th, 04, 9:32 PM I run an Performer RPM (Not an airgap) with a HP 950 Holley Carb. and the stock style heat shield with a 3" open element aircleaner on the big block under the stock hood of my 64. Works out just fine. I have about 3/4" to spare.
swtlou Jul 15th, 04, 9:34 PM bottlerat was that on a SB or a BC
hotrod_06010 Jul 15th, 04, 10:09 PM swtlou,
my buddie dosen't have the pics on his pc anymore, will try to dig one up for you, maybe by tomorrow night.
He is also running a drop down air cleaner. it is a K&N.
bottlerat Jul 16th, 04, 5:07 AM That is on a Big Block. When I first put this intake on the car. I tried to use a 1" spacer but the hood wouldn't close. So I took the spacer and the radiator out so I could squeez up in front of the engine and see how much room I had and It was about 3/4". I hope this helps.
swtlou Jul 16th, 04, 8:39 AM Thanks guys i guess i will have to try it out when the time comes and be very careful. So what do you think of the engine combo i,m looking to get about 475 to 500 hp. graemlins/hurray.gif
Mike Feudo Jul 16th, 04, 12:51 PM I had all kinds of different ones on my 66 but you must use the stock sunken aircleaner or something just like it.
chvyhs Jul 16th, 04, 2:49 PM I ran an old Edelbrock Street Master intake on my 396 '66 Chevelle combo. I had that intake, a 1/2 inch NOS plate, a Holley 850, and a K&N drop base air cleaner under the stock hood.
Here's the intake:

(It's for sale now)
Here's my engine with a Torker intake:

hotrod_06010 Jul 17th, 04, 10:08 PM http://photos.yahoo.com/hotrod_06010 web page (http://photos.yahoo.com/hotrod_06010)
Since I can't get the picture to post, click on the wb page and then you can veiw the pictures. One is the motor with the air gap, and the other is the car it is in.
chvyhs Jul 18th, 04, 6:58 PM Yeah, I think the Air gap is a good choice. I'm going to see how well it runs with the Torker before I make my final decision about getting my engine an Air gap manifold. So far I've heard nothing but good things about them.
I'm actually going to be getting rid of my drop base air cleaner because I have the Cowl induction hood now. I want to try and pull all of my incomming air from the cowl.
Good luck
Bad Rat 414 Jul 19th, 04, 2:30 PM I don't know what the deal is with my '67, but WITHOUT the air cleaner my RPM air gap won't fit under my SS hood. The air horn is touching the insulation on the underside of the hood.
mr 4 speed Jul 19th, 04, 2:35 PM I have one of those old BBC Edelbrock Streetmaster intakes laying around..how did it work? It sure has a small plenum..and has those weird ribs in the ports.
Cool looking though.
swtlou Jul 19th, 04, 6:51 PM Thanks again guys, it's nice to go somewhere and be able to put a thought out and have an exchange of ideas with people who have had hands on experience with the things i have questions about.
Would also like to know if anyone will be going to gand island new york this weekend july 23-25 for the second annual"northern chevelle gathering"
for more info go to www.canamchevelles.com. Hope to see some of you there.
chvyhs Jul 20th, 04, 12:39 PM Mr 4 speed,
