Is it possible that a 136 SS car really be a SS with a 454? I'm conflicting reports.
Thanks

All 1972 SS cars were '136' cars.....13637 were the 2 door hardtops, 13667 were the convertibles. What you are undoubtedly thinking of is the 1968 and older cars, where the SS was a separate model, the model number beginning with '138'. In 1972, all 2 door hardtops were model number 13637, and all convertibles were model number 13667. The SS package was just an option on these models, so you can't tell if the car is an SS or not just by the model number. If it was originally an SS454, it will have a 'W' as the 5th digit in the VIN.

ThanksYes. Beginning in 1969 the SS option (Z25) was just that, an option like anything A/C, radio, etc. and was not a separate series as it was from 65 (Malibu SS) through 68 (SS396). In 1969 the SS option could be ordered on any 13637/67/80 Malibu sport coupe, convertible, and pickup as well as the 300 Deluxe coupe and sedan.

In 1970 there were two SS options, Z25 got you the L34 engine while the Z15 option got you the LS5 and the LS6 was optional on top of that.

In 71 and 72 the Z25 regular production order code was dropped and the Z15 simply became a 'dress up' option and available with any optional V8 engine. The 350-2, 350-4, and 402-4 could be ordered with or without the SS option. The 454 required the SS option.

1970 through 1972, the SS options(s) were available on any Malibu sport coupe, convertible, and pickup. EVERY 1970 or 1971 SS car is Malibu-based and will carry a VIN starting with 136..., 1972 SS cars are also Malibu-based and carry a VIN of 1D....

Only a (real) build sheet, bill-of-sale, etc. showing a 454 engine, OR the original 454 engine still in the car, would mean the car was ordered with the SS option as the SS option was mandatory with the 454 engine but optional with any other optional V8 engine.

A 1972 SS454 will have a W in the VIN as the 5th digit. A 1972 SS454 also will not start with 13637, it should be 1D37W or 1D67W.
