: Alternator bracket
rodent4 Jul 12th, 08, 5:30 AM Can you guy's tell me if this is a standard GM butcher job, or has Bubba had a go at it? If it's Bubbas doing, could someone please post a pic of an un-butchered bracket :)

rodent4 Jul 12th, 08, 7:20 PM Jim, what year chevelle?
Hi Tim, It's a '67 SS, my guess would be a 325hp.
charbilly2001 Jul 12th, 08, 9:18 PM I guess we have to ask questions of this guy in really specific terms!
Hey Jim, care to tell us if its a SBC or a BBC? It really makes a difference.

I don't think he even likes Chevys.
rodent4 Jul 12th, 08, 10:56 PM Ok first, I don't know if this is from a Big block or a Small block as it was given to me :(
If you could tell me if it is original or not and if it's for a Small block or a Big block it would be appreciated :)
Not being from the States I have not had my hands on anywhere near as much Chevy stuff as you guy's so please bare with me. I have been to quite a few web sites to look at brackets and pulleys but there seems to be conflicting part#'s and configurations.
I don't think he even likes Chevys.
No' I don't like'em much at all :boring:

It wasn't me!
Just buy a new one, looks like you've got the money.

Car rich, Cash poor :(
Mikeys69 Jul 13th, 08, 2:55 AM Why don't you just build a standard GM butcher job...l:)
You got all those nice cars and you are screwing around with a piece of junk bracket.
Hmm...
Brotherjoe Jul 13th, 08, 3:06 AM Why you guys breaking his balls? He just asked a simple question.
Mikeys69 Jul 13th, 08, 3:15 AM Well. I have spent alot of money and time working on my car.
So I don't much like the comment about "standard GM butcher job".
It implies all Chevy products are nothing but a pile of "standard GM butcher job" stuff.

Lighten up.
I used to drive a 71 cuda. It was sub-lime, a color you loved or hated. There was no in between. Some people would say "nice car, but I don't like the color." And I spent a heck of alot of money on that paint job, but I never once got as upset as you seem to be.
rodent4 Jul 13th, 08, 4:07 AM As for those being his cars. I don't believe him. :noway:
Whatever.......................maybe get out and grab yourself a couple of cans of "harden the hell up"
I have seen quite a lot of GM stuff from the sixties that is rougher than hessian undies.
No reason for me to believe that the bracket isn't beyond their scope of roughness.

davewho1 Jul 13th, 08, 6:48 AM Looks like a standard Bubba butcher job to me; but then, what do I know? :p I've never seen an alt bracket quite like that.
I guess you told big red in that last pic.
Cool cars ya got there, Jim.

I agree.
Maybe it's the camera angle but I don't think that's even a Chevy bracket.
oldtimebaseballfan Jul 13th, 08, 10:04 AM Jim, I haven't seen an alternator bracket like that. Although I deal mostly with 70s.
Bubba's 69 Jul 13th, 08, 10:10 AM I agree.
Maybe it's the camera angle but I don't think that's even a Chevy bracket.
That's kinda what I was thinking also. It looks close but not quite right.
You can buy a new one cheap. Chrome ones can be bought for under $20 on ebay.
I was just playin'. I like to help, but in this case even I would buy a new one. And I don't even have a job right now!:D
Mikeys69 Jul 13th, 08, 10:57 AM Ok now I believe. :hurray:
Sorry for the comment.
gspan1830 Jul 13th, 08, 11:08 AM Why you guys breaking his balls? He just asked a simple question.
Yeah!!! What's up with that.
Xtreme70SS396 Jul 13th, 08, 11:40 AM Nice cars, Jim.
To actually answer your question, that bracket does not look like a standard GM bracket, it looks like someone did some modifications to make it work in their application.
Here's a Big Block bracket pic from www.ss396.com:

Here's a Small Block bracket pic from www.ss396.com:

Looks like you have the butchered big block version. Note you can buy a replacement from ground up (www.ss396.com). Shipping might kill you, though. ;)
Canucit@msn.com Jul 13th, 08, 1:01 PM The small block alt brack and the big block long water pump bracket look alot a like but they are not
I tried to put on a small block bracket on my 454 and then figured it out
ebay has chrome
BB alt brackets for about 14$
Michael
I do not know what that bracket came off of
Mad Max called, he wants his bracket back...:D
Sorry Jim as you are from down under I couldn't resist. BTW very nice collection of cars you have there.
350_Malibu Jul 13th, 08, 1:48 PM Jim,
I've never seen a stock alt. bracket from the factory thats been all hacked and welded. I kind of agree with others that it doesn't even look like a factory chevy bracket, at least none that I have ever seen.
I think Bubba tried using his ford bracket on his chevy and modified it to fit.
sorry for these guys breaking your balls. normally people don't act like that around here and actually try to help... must be something in the water.
SixActual Jul 13th, 08, 2:07 PM Well. I have spent alot of money and time working on my car.

No it doesn't. It implies that ALL GM vehicles are crap.
Respectfully,

64elkynss Jul 13th, 08, 4:19 PM So that's why GM bought Holden all those years ago...........
rodent4 Jul 13th, 08, 4:23 PM Thank's very much for the comments and help guy's :D
It's much appreciated
And for the record, I'm a Chev man through and through. Will be till the day I expire :beers:
NOTHINBUT69s Jul 13th, 08, 6:04 PM I run a chrome bracket on my 66 bb, looks good but junk, very filmsy, I throw a belt at high rpm 5-6k
Bomber '67 Jul 13th, 08, 7:51 PM Okay, I think it is now perfectly clear that it is probably a bad idea to refer to GM as a butcher job when you are on a GM centric website.
Its seems obvious to me that you have a BBC bracket that has had the manifold tab ground off and a 90 degree one attatched. GM historically went for fewer steps in production, not more - so your bracket was obviously fabbed by the welder whose day job was butchering.
Thomas
ak 67SD Jul 13th, 08, 9:26 PM confirming what others said, looks like a short water pump BBC alt. bracket. someone cut the top mounting ear off and modded it... common for aftermarket manifolds (like edelbrock) to not have the bolt hole in the right place... the lower hole mounts to the top water pump bolt... what engine do you have in your 67? as this would have started as the right peice for it...

now that's funny...
dfred19 Jul 14th, 08, 8:09 PM Gotta hand it to my Aussie friend, that was good. He could have added a few empties of Victoria Bitter on the ground for effect though.
nutseynut7 Jul 14th, 08, 11:12 PM Doesn't look like the one I have on my 67

Bomber '67 Jul 14th, 08, 11:53 PM nutsenut7, I'm not sure that I can quite put my finger on it - but I'm thinking, just maybe, that at least one thing on your car *might* be different than original production in '67. But then again what do I know, maybe yours is a prototype?
On the plus side, if you ever decided to use a factory left side BBC alternator bracket your intake manifold has the mounting lug! So, no butcher job bracket for you :)

Imagine tryin' to make that monster motor breath through thet teensy weensie air filter!
My alternator bracket is definitely a butcher job due to the requirements of the supercharger. On the other hand he did paint it black and it works well.
nutseynut7 Jul 19th, 08, 12:01 AM I have a new hood in my garage to go on when it gets painted in November then air cleaner will fit I have no clearance now thats the reason for small air cleaner

Believe me my friend...my comment was meant humorously. Absolutely NO criticism intended. Thats a fantastic looking power plant. I pretty much figured that there was a reason for the little air cleaner and anyone who can build a mill like that knows what he's doing. :)
