I bought a '78 Malibu two door Landau for $400 two years ago. It has a running 350/TH350 in it. I had it sitting in a friends field until I could get ready to tackle it. Well...it's time.

The first thing is stripping all the crap out of it, like the interior, motor, tranny and rear end. I've going to order a Chris Alston back half for it as soon as the sale of my '02 Camaro goes through tomorrow. I also picked up a ford 9" housing. I have a line on a 454 motor that needs a complete rebuild.

Here it is...

They make great race cars. A buddy is running high 6's (1 furlong) with a 350, no power adders. I'd like to find a 78 wagon just for something a bit different. I'd probably go with a SB since I'm pretty familiar with them.

Sean, those late year Malibus look bada$$ tubbed, or even just in race trim! Have fun with it. Nice plans on the running gear. For a drag car, I'd save my dimes and nickles for a solid roller.

Get ready to bend over for those BB headers... unfortunately the selection is very limited for these cars. also you might want to change out the front spindles for a 79-up set... seems 78 was an oddball as far as rotors and such. I have a 83 parts wagon that i am stripping this spring so if you need anything let me know!

For headers,I'd try the SUM-G9010 over at Summit..for $79 its worth it to see if they fit..

My understanding was hooker huslers were about the only ones out there that fit decent...

Fig...My understanding is '78's were an oddball year. I'm going to convert over to Hotchkis tube A-arms, but don't know a damn thing about the spindles. Eventually I'll upgrade to some Wildwood front brakes, but I really need to focus on the rearend at this point. I'm getting ready to call Chris Alston and place the order today. Why would I need to change spindles?

IIRC the 78 spindles used a different bearing arrangement hence the unique rotor deal... You should be able to get a stock set for under 30 if you need to change them. Although if you go with a wilwood setup they may have the right hubs to fit the 78. And yes from what i understand the Hooker's are the best fitting.

Also check out http://www.maliburacing.com/bbc_conversion.htm for more info. Philip did a lot of research when he put his car together!
