Classic Small block vs. Big block…
Yesterday during the Year One “Commerce Challenge”, Marooned (Mike Norman) with his “Rat Killer” ’65 small block Chevelle and myself with the ’70 540 Chevelle had the opportunity to line up for a heads up, no holds race.
Mike had been previously warned by Tech to keep his car slower than an 11.49 or he would be forced to park it. The car only has factory seatbelts…no 5 point harness.
ACES1 was present to record this historic event on film. ;)
Extended burnouts were required. :D

The results:

Small block / Big block

R/T ___ .036 / .024
60’ ___ 1.520 / 1.509
330’ __ 4.412 / 4.396
1/8 ___ 6.867 / 6.843
mph __ 100.08 / 100.99
1000' __ 9.138 / 8.958
¼ ____ 11.585 / 10.755
mph ___ 81.19 / 124.95

As you can see, a very tight race thru the 1/8 mi.
That's one quick little small block... graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Sounds like a good time!

What's going to take to get this video?

Mike has a role cage in that thing, right? But only a lap seat belt? HA! :D

First of all, Thanks to Bill, Dana, Kjett, Joe S & Mike Newby for a great time. That was a fun day.

I rolled mine across the scales after the run.

3825 with me in it.

I lifted at or about the 1000' mark and got on the brakes.

My poor reaction time was cuz I was waiting on the Pizza guy from Johnny-B's to get there. graemlins/beers.gif

Haven't had that much fun since the hog's ate my 9 year old brother.

Hey marooned, looked pretty close. I'd say he had you by about a tenth plus the slight hole shot. Your 65 is awful heavy for a small block. My '67 SS with an iron headed 396 only weighes 3450 + driver. How are you guys getting these cars so heavy with a engine that is 140 pounds lighter than a rat?

I weighed yesterday...same scale...3700 lbs w/ driver.
Full bench interior, street legal (mufflers), 6 point moly cage...basically fully equiped as is Mike.

The car weighed 3300 pounds 2 years agow/o driverI would guess 150# for the cage and + another battery, Stock rad was swapped for an Alum, just a heavy street car I guess.

Mine is thru the exhaust with the air cleaner on.

Kripes, com'on the guy's running against a 540!!!

When I called it RATKILLER I meant against all us 396/427/ maybe 454 street guys. Man, you don't give it a 100 shot or even a 150 shot to make up for all that cube differential, you aren't going to keep up with a 540!

Point is, each could drive it home from the track if they wanted. Pump gas.

TOO COOL! Can't wait to see the vids!

Hey Mike, now you know what it felt like to line up against RATKILLER, er Marooned, last year at CB. My pizza had anchovies though. redface.gif

How cool, I can't wait to see the TV MOVIE! :D

Oh, and BOTH you GUYS, Y'ALL GOT SOME DARN FAST RIDES!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif graemlins/thumbsup.gif graemlins/thumbsup.gif

We had a fun weekend, that's what it's all about, rite?

Bob4Prez,

"Moron" That's a little uncalled for on a freindly site like this. You sign on the site 9-14-04, no info as to who you are or what your intrests are and you attack.

Sheetmetal is a freind of mine and glad his car has come out as good as it has.

Get a life Bob, make it someplace other than this site. ;)

Sorry i got your heads wrong Bill. Both cars are very nice examples of old muscle cars. I once had a chance to buy a 1965 Z-16 Chevelle but thought i owed too much at the time. What a mistake. I really like the maroon color on Mike's car. Guess he'll have to squeeze it a little harder next time. P.S... Who is "mousefighter" anyways?

An honest mistake really. I had AFR 195s on the 383 that was in this car last year. Another mild combo with a solid flat tappet cam that ran mid 12s.
I would have loved to try thier new BB versions but couldn't wait all that lead time AFR needed to manufacture at the time (last fall).

Oct 12th, 04, 1:36 AM
Hmmm, what was that phrase I often hear? "There's no dyno's at the racetrack?" LOL.

I'll have to go along with the BSE boys on this one, dyno's don't mean squat, the 1320 is the only real measure of and engine's power and the ability of the car/driver to make use of it.

That being said, my car only runs 15s, so I can honestly say it is a Slowpoke. :D

Good job Bill and Norm!

Every time I've raced a dyno, I've won. They're not very quick.

Awesome times guys! Doesn't matter what it is, or how it's powered, anything that goes 10s (or 11s on the brakes) is FAST.

Georgia69
Oct 12th, 04, 4:16 PM
Well, I was there, so here's what I saw...

1) I saw Bill & Mike make the match race pass, so I can vouch for the numbers

2) I saw Dana run 13.55

3) I saw Joe run 10.02

4) I saw Kenny run a 10.74

5) I certainly DID NOT see Bob4Prez's dyno engine, or his buddy's 540 powered 69, anywhere on the premises. I did see some toothless moron with "Bob" tatooed on his arm walking around wearing an orange vest and picking up garbage. Coincidence?

Wow, sorry I missed the big match race. I must've been busy with Patrick. I didn't realize marooned's car was a small block or I would have pestered him with questions.

Dana, you must've been hitting the practice tree over the last few weeks. A perfect light? I've got a few 501 lights and a few 499s but never the magic 500. Congrats.

Dana/Bill/Joe, make sure you guys keep Nov 6 clear on your calendar to make the Carolina race with KJ and me. With the potential for nice cool air and the great prep at that track we should all be setting new personal bests.
