I just bought a 1969 SS 396 and was verifying all the numbers the Vin comes up as a malibu the cast number on the block comes up as a 1969 402 and the transmission matchs with CA-68 number for a TH- 400 I have never heard of such a combination coming from the factory. Is there any sure way to tell ? I have bought enough books to start my own library
Thanks in advance

In mid 69 and on, the 396's were actually 402's or do you mean the combination of a 402 in Malibu, or the combination of the TH-400?

In mid 1969, Chevrolet bored the 396 another .030 which makes them 402ci. The 396 was so popular that they continued to call it a 396. All 70-up 396's are actually 402ci.
Edit; I need to start typing faster. When I started, There were no responses. LOL
Technically there were no 402's in 69.
The engine codes changed to the 3 letter code for 70 and the 402's.
Yeah, yeah ,69 run ran late but the 3 letter code kept place.
