: airline reservations: price changes
no1dc Jul 8th, 08, 5:30 PM Thought I made reservations on US Airways last night for Nick's and my trip to Philadelpia for his surgery but they evidently didn't go through. The cost last night was 536.00
Fast forward to today, call US Airways, tough luck is their opinion, "We can't guarantee online prices/bookings". Go make new reservations today. Get online and the cost went from 536.00 to 783.00. In the process of filling out the credit card info and press purchase I get back my receipt stating the tickets were 784.00. What the ???? I couldn't believe the priced jumped in the 30 seconds it took me to fill out the payment info.
If it hadn't been US Airways were the only airline with a non-stop flight back I would have booked with another airline. I don't want Nick to have to deal with lay overs and such. He's going to be sore from his surgery.
That type of change just doesn't seem right to me. Pete

Good luck
quikss Jul 8th, 08, 5:47 PM We are flying to Orlando in October, and I won't be convinced we are flying until that plane is in the air. Our flight has been rescheduled three times already because of airlines trying to condense flights and such. So far the latest change is very favorable as it went from having a layover in Atlanta to straight through now and we get in in time to go to Old Town for the car show on that saturday and still go the next Saturday again. Hopefully it stays that way.
Airlines are in serious trouble right now. The price jump in a few hours doesn't suprise me one bit.

Yes I did and the reservationist could have cared less. I'm hoping to be able to get him a seat on the return flight with some leg room. Pete

OrrieG Jul 8th, 08, 11:53 PM Bend over if you have to change. I had an employee book a flight while I was on vacation. To do me a favor he used Travelocity instead of my agent (saved me $20!). Cost was $764.00. When I got back trip was cancelled for a month. We call "Jim" in India to get tickets cancelled. He refered us to the cancellation clause which clearly stated in fine print the cancelation charge was $740. Not $740 back, they KEEP $740 because that is the contract we agreed to. On the other phone I called my agent, she said that's what they do, the airline would have charged her $60. So we ask "Jim" to rebook the flight, cost goes up $374.00, even though I am on another computer looking at the same flight for about $760. Why????? Because they can, so we pay $374 to save about $100 (cancellation fee + agents fee).
Make sure you read through the contracts when you book, fine print will bite you.

Oh man, that cracked me up!!!!
My mom had to fly with a broken ankle and freshly replaced hip (very sore) and when she asked if she could bring a pillow on board to prop up her leg she was told no!!!!:sad:
camcojb Jul 9th, 08, 11:11 AM I just went through this. My son is going to Cornell this year, so I searched for flights. I found a round trip for me and a one-way for him for this August at $950 total. I did not book it because I was having trouble finding a hotel, they were all booked on the days we wanted to go.
I had to leave for Power Tour so I let my wife find hotels. 3 days later she called and said the hotels were booked so I went to confirm my saved flights. In three days they'd gone from $950 to $2000! Needless to say I did not book them, and had to have the wife find some other flights. Ended up paying $1150, cheapest out there.
I'm not sure what's going to happen to the airline industry, but price increases like that, cancelled flights, delays, constant re-scheduling seem to be the norm now.

busterwivell Jul 9th, 08, 6:25 PM The company I represent is flying me up to Minneapolis on Monday and back Tuesday morning. I had a choice of leaving Sunday at noon for a 2PM Monday meeting (and sit around for 20+ hrs, or leave Monday early. I opted for Monday. They have me booked to Denver, then on to Minn..........returning on the Northwest non-stop on Tuesday. (they booked the return flight round trip and will cancel the second half). I wonder who will get notified if there is a change? I've had Northwest cancel the non-stop before.........we'll see if I'm home in the afternoon Tuesday. I hate to fly any more.

I don't get the airline industry at all...You paid a ton of money for your trip from Missouri to Philadelphia...and I looked at a round trip flight from Phoenix to Chicago for my mother in law yesterday...$261 round trip through Expedia...how do they figure fares?

Airline pricing has to be the biggest mystery ever! Even airline officials probably can't figure it out if they had to :D
I'd guess that pricing depends on many variables, including competition on the route and whether people connecting from a small airport through a large airport are buying more profitable connecting tickets. US Airways has a huge portion of the Philadelphia market. Not much competition, especially from Missouri, so they can stick it to people (i.e $$$$). Phoenix to Chicago is probably competitive considering there are two airports to fly into near Chicago. From here in Fresno, CA, United has a near lock on the Fresno - Denver route. I've seen over $1,000 round trip at times, and that's during non-peak times. Finding a deal on a flight these days is like playing Russian Roulette; you get lucky every great while, but mostly you just get hosed.
OrrieG Jul 10th, 08, 1:25 PM There are deals between the big hubs. You get the royal shaft when you leg to smaller airports. Boise to SLC, DEN, SeaTAC is always more than the connection the next hub. Last summer I could fly from Boise to New York, Washington DC or Orlando for less than Rapid City South Dakota! Days of the week also make a difference. I have stayed an extra day and worked remotely because the hotel was cheaper than the airline ticket price for leaving a day earlier. Same deal as hotel rooms in LV or Reno. M-TH cheap, Fri-Sun 3x more.
