: Your local hotrod scene in high school?
SILVERSS454 Jul 8th, 08, 11:02 AM Just wondering about your local hotrod scene back in high school? I graduated in '86 and live in a fairly small town in a rural area. I always thought we had alot of nice cars around that the owners took alot of pride in showing off and racing. A typical scene back then in our high school parking lot included a couple of '69 Z-28's, a blown '67 small block Chevelle, a '67 BBC SS Chevelle, 2 small block '70 Chevelle's, my '70 LS5 car, '71 Mach 1, '71 Javelin, '69 Firebird, several 77-81 Trans Am's (best bud had one with a 428 installed) and many more came out on the weekends to cruise and look for races. Back then, everybody street raced and made the 2.5 hour drive to Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, KY occasionally but, nobody was terribly fast. Low 12's/high 11's were about as wild as it got. The .75 cent per gallon gasoline made it possible to drive your car to school all week and street race on the weekend on a half tank. Avgas was available at the local airport for about $1.10 per gallon if you had high compression.
The first guy that put a solid roller setup in his 400 small block was unbeatable for about a month then, everyone caught up. There was also the one guy who maybe had nitrous and maybe didn't. He had a very stealth setup on his '79 Trans Am that also just happened to have a Olds 455 instead of the factory 403. Of course, it was nearly impossible to tell any difference. NOS was very big for awhile, then the cubic inch wars broke out. 406 small blocks soon gave way to 427 and 454 big blocks, LOL!
Some local law enforcement were OK with street racing, some weren't. It was always a game to try and not get caught. About twice a year there was a big crackdown and you had to be really careful. Most of it was done late night and into the early morning. Saw the sun come up alot back then from being out all night hanging out with friends, racing, chasing girls and generally just being kids. Too bad kids today have to deal with $4-$5 gallon gasoline that they have to work their butts off to pay for.
Just kinda feeling a bit nostalgic today.
wes migletz Jul 8th, 08, 11:35 AM I grew-up in Raytown, MO (near K.C. and Independence). Raytown High, Class of 89. My mother's house is just a few miles from KCIR. In high school, I worked at the DQ on 40 HGWY, not too far from Royal's Stadium. After work on weekends, my friends and I would cruise Noland Road, and occasionally go out to Blue Ridge Blvd, in So KC, for some street action.
I had a primered 73 Nova with a Crane blue print 30-30 cam, in a flat top piston 350, that Herb Clark at Clark Machine on 24 HGWY showed me how to rebuild. There were some muscle cars in my highschool, but not a lot. The kids were starting to drive the late 70s-early 80s commuter cars. The 5.0s and Irocs were fun to beat on the street. My uncle and I built a 70 Chevelle SS (4 speed bench seat) my senior year, which went 12.78 @ 110.
cuisinartvette Jul 8th, 08, 12:06 PM Chatsworth High, class of 86
Couple early Mustangs, a black Nova that was nasty wicked, IROCs, a Trans Am or two.
Cal Bugs were real popular, too.
I either took a bike,rode a bus or walked til Iwas 20.
manveru Jul 8th, 08, 12:22 PM lol, mine sucked class of 06. a few years before me there were a bunch of nova's some cougars, and camaros(brother included) all ranging from high 13's to low 15's. I think i was the fastest the first year i could drive there with a 15 second 77 1/2 ton pickup lol, then i got ousted by a high 14 ex state patrol camaro, thats pretty much all there was, my buddy had a 4 door 3 on the tree 6 cyl. nova(18 second)
kjett Jul 8th, 08, 12:34 PM Zephyrhills, Fla Class of 1983...
We had some pretty nice hotrods. I had a '68 Camaro with a 355, 12.5:1 trw slugs, Crane hyd. cam, Muncie M-21 and 456 gears. My brother had an immaculate '66 Chevy II SS all numbers matching L-79 327/350hp, M-22 and 456 gears. A few of the other cars I remember were a '66 396/350hp Chevelle SS, ~'71 Ford Gran Torino with a BBF, a few other old Camaros. One guy who's parents had some money had a brand new '83 Ford Mustang 302 with a 5 speed. My brothers Chevy II was the quickest car in town and the bench mark for all the other hot rodders. We never once got beat in his car. My Camaro was the second quickest, but it was in a nearly constant state of repairs as I was rough on parts back then :)
SILVERSS454 Jul 8th, 08, 1:25 PM We always thought California and Michigan (Detroit)were the hotrod capitol's of the world and talked about how cruising and street racing must be really wild in those places.
novadude Jul 8th, 08, 1:26 PM Class of '89 in Pittsburgh, PA. You guys in KY must have had a lot more money than we did! Lots of Chevelles, 2nd gen Camaros / Firebirds, Cutlass, Novas, etc, but most were just running stock 350s w/ headers, wheels, exhaust. The "fast" guys that were 16-21 yrs old may have had a cam and intake, and were running 14s or high 13s.
I grew up in a lower middle class city neighborhood, so that may be why we never had the "good stuff". Seemed like some younger guys in the suburbs had the big block cars, and stuff that was quicker. Even in the mid-to-late 80s, the real SS cars, Road Runners, GTOs, etc were out of our price range. We had to grab the cheap Malibus (and you could get a damn nice 69-70 Malibu hardtop for $3000 or less back then  ).
EDIT: The other thing to remember was that times were different. The "HOT" new cars back then were IROCs and 5.0 Mustangs... high-14 seconds cars at best. If you had something in the 13s, you were flyin' in those days. Even a super-mild 350 in a Nova could embarass the rich kids with new "5.0" Mustang. Ask me how I know... ;)
Tom Mobley Jul 8th, 08, 1:46 PM Bench Racing? We have a section for that.
dougyfresh Jul 8th, 08, 1:57 PM You guys had it good back then the only old cars we have at our school are toyotas and otherlate 80s early 90s cars. Me and my friend are the only ones that have cars that are at least 30 years old which is his 60 ranchero and my 69 velle
mr 4 speed Jul 8th, 08, 2:12 PM Graduated 1989.....went to a vocational tech school and took autobody..since it was a regional school we had people from all over and nearly everyone had a cool car..my first car was a 71 Chevelle SS..green with white stripes.Fellow classmates had a 68 Dart with a 440/4speed,69 GTO convertible-all stock,67 Chevelle with a 427,white on white 67 GTO...all kinds of neat stuff... Local hotrod scene around my hometown had a lot of fast rides..a good friend of mine had a trio of grey primered 67 442's (a convertible,a total stocker and one with a built 455, dual Holley 660's on a low profile Offy dual quad intake..along with a 3000 stall and 3.90's..car ran mid 12's around 109-110 at Etown) He also had a 77 Firebird Formula that had a built Olds 400 in it and he called it "Formula 442"
His father owned a garage so they had dealer plates and where always doing something crazy.. :D
Another guy a 68 Camaro with a 454 and nitrous...lots of fast stuff around back then..
SWHEATON Jul 8th, 08, 2:15 PM Class of 1974 /Dutchess cnty NY,i had the following car's when in 11th & 12th grades.
I had a 64 chev impalla ss covert with 283/glide,ran nice but could not get out of its own way, then a 69 chevelle with sbc/350(2brl) with saginaw 4spd/331 gear all from factory. That car ran pretty strong for what it was at the time. I ran the crap out of it untill it used 1qt oil every 100 miles, then i did my 1st complete rbld of a motor at 17 yrs old and it ran well when done too.
Then the last car i had in high school was a 70 camaro 350/auto ,then i bought the #'s matching 69 ss 396 chevelle i still have today after that ,but that car was never ever a daily driver,wk ends/shows only for the last 30+ yrs.
I had the fastest car in H/S which was the 69 with 350(2brl)/4spd ,i beat the friends 69 charger 383 auto time and time again along with a 68 stang 302 4spd and also beat a 67 chevelle with 307/holley 600/cam/headers,4spd/373's again with my bone stock 350(2brl)/4spd/331 gear . But that isnt saying much compaired to the money kids had avail to them after i was out of h/s,they have much faster cars in h/s these days then we had at my school in mid 70's.
I also had very fast bikes in H/S,a kawaski h1 500 & h2 750 both tripple cyl 2 strokes, they handled like crap but were very fast in a straight line. The h2 in good cond with good rider could run 11.90's in the 1/4 which was very fast for a street bike 35yrs ago,but again today's stock bikes have much larger/more powerfull engines that run flat 10 sec 1/4's and can approach or top 200mph which is unreal for a box stock bike and unsafe as hell, too fast for me. i bought a Kz900 kawi new in 76 and then soldit with 4k miles on it to but the a 77 kz1000 that i bought new in 77 that still has a kirker 4 into 1 i installed yrs back. It's fast enough for me,but it's slow by todays standards,it only does 60mph in 1st,85 mph in 2nd,then 105mph in 3rd gear before hitting 4th with 5th still left to go. I believe top end was approx 148-152 in 77 when tested for top end on salt flats with mirrors removed and small rider,i must be getting old to ride such a slow bike that will only run a high 11 sec 1/4.(LOL!!!) But since i backed off the jetting closer to stock since i dont push it hard anymore it get's 50mpg with me and the little wife on the back when taking it easy crusing around at 60-65mph,now thats not bad.

Jason Snyder Jul 8th, 08, 2:16 PM I graduated in 90 , my highschool was VERY into hotrods !! I took the automechanics & autobody classes ALL four years . I loved it and soon used the automechanics as a way of income ,THIS helped support my 65 nova . I never really street raced but everyone wanted a piece of me . I got tired of other punks doing burnouts out in front of my parents house (sometimes at midnight) .So i finally challenged the Fast GUY OF THE SCHOOL .He had a 64 chevelle with a 406 on nitrous ,dart heads ,4.11 posi ,the works.
Well i ran him and TOOK his #1 rank . My car was a 11.90car ,so his was probably a 12.10 car . After that i was no longer bothered and i grew up !
wilmaya Jul 8th, 08, 2:18 PM Sayreville NJ Class of 76, I had 1 of the 2 fast cars. Mine was a factory 69 SS396 325Hp Camaro. My best time at E-town Raceway was 11.93 110.67 mph. I had a stock bottom end. I had installed a Crane Fireball Cam Kit 550 lift 320 duration along with some head work and other bolt ons, TH400 4.56 gear. The quickest car was a 63 Nova SB 4 speed, his time was in the low 11s, which his older brother built for him. These two cars were street cars and our only means of transportation. Not bad for 17 year old kids.

1966_L78 Jul 8th, 08, 2:54 PM San Mateo, CA, Serra High School, class of 1985...
My class, not a lot of "hot rods". I had a few Chevelles, my buddy had a '69 Charger R/T 440/4-speed car, but it was pretty beat up back then. A '70 Charger 440/auto (another beater). A few other chevelles and Mustangs, but nothing really fast (or really nice either)... Nice '67/68 Firebird (but never saw the guy jump on it). One guy had a very nice 70/71 Challenger; Orange R/T. Been a few years, but I think the same guy had a Black Challenger firast, and then got the Orange one... "Best Car" in the year book was some guys dad's '57 Thunderbird. It wasn't really the nicest, and he didn't drive it all the time, but he was a popular guy, and got the vote... One guy brought his dad's 65/66 BB Vette that was nice, but he drove it gingerly (at least around school)... My Chevelle was really nice, but got wrecked mid-year and I bought my SS as a replacement...
Cruisin'; Nice wide boulevard, cruise a stretch about 3 miles long, and usually packed with cars... Then around 11-12 we'd drive over the hill (7-10 miles) to this little two-lane road; Canada Road. Long, straight stretch with a 1/4 mile laid out along a flat stretch at the bottom of a valley, and virtually no houses within 3-4 miles ( the ONLY place was this estate- Filoli- I think used in the opening shots for the "Dynasty" TV show). You could see oncoming cars (police, etc) well before they got there... Usually a pretty good site... In all those years, I never saw any spectators lined up near the finish line... Police eventually placed "no Parking" signs, and started giving people parking tickets, but never saw anybody get a racing ticket...
A little closer to the cruise, there was 3rd Avenue; 4-lanes divided (expressway-style, no driveways) with a center median/island, a good 1-mile straight... Pretty good, but since it was almost in town, it usually got shut down pretty quickly once the cars started going...
The City effectively shut down the cruise in the late 80's :( Thankfully, I got to live through some enjoyable times...
dreis454 Jul 8th, 08, 3:11 PM Graduated in 1984 Reg VoTech school but hung around my hometown at the time.

'71 Monte 454 4speed
'69 Mustang 428 CJ all original
'68 Camaro 427 4speed w/big NOS kit
'65 Plymouth or Dodge w/440 auto
'65 Chevelle 454/auto

rumor has it that I was born in the back seat......
R66SS427 Jul 8th, 08, 3:30 PM Class of 73, Ticonderoga, N.Y.
My first "fast" car was a 67 corvette coupe. Black on black. 327,4sp. I abused that car so bad it makes me sick. Had 11000 miles on it when I bought it for....$2800. Won alot of beer with that car. Next was a 40 chevy coupe with an L-88 427BB. It was an old gasser that I somehow managed to get legal (sorta) for the street. With a little weight in the trunk, we'd wheelie away from the main light in our little town. Traded that for a snowmobile. Then I bought a 69 396/375 nova. Nice car, but it had a rough life before me so that went down the road for 1500. Next was a 69 Z/28, fathom green,350 4sp. The guy gave me the original DZ 302, but I was not into "smaller" motors so I (gulp) gave it to a friend.
The street racing here then was dangerous at best. It usually followed happy hour at the local pub. Lucky to be alive I guess.I do remember the local cop seeing us all head out of town and he would drive off in the opposite direction. Those were the days. Fill up with 260 Sunoco for $8.00 and drive for 2 days. If my kid ever pulled the stuff we did, I'd ground him for life!!
65lkey Jul 8th, 08, 3:42 PM uuhhh I graduated in 08... the hotrod scene was a honda scene. I was the only one in the whole school with a motor bigger than a 6 liter, but don't get me wrong I have a honda but it gets 40 mpg. I would have so much fun on friday nights taking them on the freeway and just leaving it in third and pulling away from them.
One guy in my autoshop class has a 96 honda 197 hp at the front wheels, pretty quick. I'd still wast him off the line and keep 5 or 6 cars on him. it's tons of fun because they buy all this stuff to go faster and they try ang go faster than my $800 big block
Twins Fan Jul 8th, 08, 4:59 PM Osseo Senior High (MN) class of '91. We didn't have a huge hot rod scene, but there were some second gen. Camaros, Trans Ams, Firebirds, Monte Carlos, and Cutlass' (mid-70's to early 80's for the last two). For the most part everyone just bought them and drove them as is, didn't do any upgrades.
I had a '79 Firebird that I bought from a kid two years older than me when he went to college. He had rebuilt an Olds 455, put a big cam in it, and stuffed it in the bird. Another guy had a Trans Am that had a big cammed Pontiac 455 in it, between the two of us we probably had the fastest cars in school, even though mine was probably a 13 second car (hopefully). That was a fun car and I never lost a race, not that I condone street racing.:D I used to tell everyone that it had a 301 c.i. in it and I wouldn't spill the beans until afterwards.:D
Now Fiday and Saturday nights up in Anoka, there were hundreds of hot rods cruising up and down Main Street. Those were great times, anyone from that area go cruising there in the late 80's early 90's?

WOW Class of '91 Burnsville, MN. Anoka was cool-still is. Porky's was decent, but we usually hung out over at the Montgomery wards since they had a bigger lot. Racing down at Red Rock (maxwell ave) and Black Dog off 35w. We had a bunch of Camaros and Chevelles, a Torino, some mustangs and one kid with a hot VW rabbit. I was into trucks in 89/90, then rolled my jeep in 90, so I got a 74 camaro which got me into cars.
Jerry70 Jul 8th, 08, 10:09 PM I graduated in `66 and there were only a few "hot rods" in the school parking lot but there were plenty of early muscle cars. One of the few modded cars was a beautiful `55 Chev with a built 301 and a Muncie that did pretty good against some of the newer stuff. Hayward high had it's share of kids from affluent families and the student's parking lot was definitely more impressive than the teacher's lot. Several GTO's, 2 L79 `65 El Caminos, and 1 Shelby GT350. There were also a few neat "hand-me-downs" like a `56 Chrysler 300 (yeah, that was the Hemi one) and a FI `57 Pontiac (both driven by girls). 3 months after graduation I took delivery of my new `67 SS396 (Marina/black, L34, M21, 3.55's, buckets). By that time muscle cars were everywhere! You could stop at a traffic light and there'd be another muscle car at each corner.
Wheels68 Jul 8th, 08, 11:53 PM Class of 86 - Our HS parking lot had a lot of El Camino's - mostly 70-72's, one 67 Chevelle, couple of 1st gen Camaros in various stages of primer, and a lot of Mopars - mostly Chargers and dusters and my 67 Dart GT. I always wanted a 65 Chevelle but the Dart was $600 from the original owner with a solid lifter 273. For what it was it was a fun car. Maybe it was the time but at least half the cars were primered back then. Everybody wanted a paint job but nobody had money. Lowered Mini trucks and Cal bugs were big at the time. One of my buddies had a 72 Datsun with a 350/350 in it that would roast the tires at will. Another buddy picked up a 914 Posche that had been converted to a 283 for $1500. That was a scary ride when it wasn't blowing out CV joints. My best friend had a primered 69 Roadrunner with an 11:1 440 my senior year of school - primer with side pipes and L50's in the rear that he picked up for $3000 if I remember correctly. It would beat most of the cars around but by today's standards wasn't much. It was probably a hot car in the early 70's that had been through a few owners. Lots of good memories though.
Painkiller Jul 9th, 08, 12:37 AM Class of 2008 - Not a lot of muscle cars...well none to be exact. I was the one one with a car that was older then 15 years. Mostly riced out hondas, newer monty or two, couple of infinitys. The two fastest cars in my school were mine :D, my 1998 caddy sts and my '72 chevelle with an lt1. A rumor got around school that most of the civics in the parking lot would take the chevelle with ease, but that was quickly stopped with a nice little burnout in front of the school at the end of the day :).
joes66 Jul 9th, 08, 12:39 AM class of 84 lafayette,IN.There was a 55 dual 4s right out of 2 lane blacktop. We had a pretty quick 68 camaro and a 70 396/375 chevelle. Some lessor goats and 74 pontiac gto. There was also a 454 t bucket that did some damage.I personally had a 71 nova with a killer 307.My buddy had a 72 chevelle 350 and we would go over to each others house and do our single track burnouts.I would see a mark in front of my house and new he was trying to show me up so I would go to his house and do a longer single track burnout. It drove our parents crazy. It took me a few years to get something that would at least get in the 13s.
64SS427 Jul 9th, 08, 12:49 AM I grew up in SoCal, graduated in 92. There were a few decent cars around, most had no interest, as we were in an affluent area and to recieve a BMW for your 16th bday wasn't uncommon. I was in auto shop all 4 years. I don't remember too many cool cars there though. One guy had about a 1978 Chevy 4x4 longbed with what he claimed was a crate LS6. Another guy had a 68 Chevelle, 307 car. I had the same 64 Camino then that I do now, except that I was running various smallblocks, depending on what year you're talking about. My nemesis was a guy with a cherry 65 Ranchero, with a "biult, all roller" 302. His car was probably 500 lbs lighter than mine, and he had 4.11 gears compared to my 3.23s. I knew better than to run him, although he really wanted a piece of me. One of my best buddies had a 55 F100 that he wasn't allowed to drive, since he had wrecked it shortly after getting his license. One of my girlfriends had a beater 71 mustang she got from her brother that had joined the Marines. It had been a 428 car, but had a stock 302/auto when I met her.

nedss396 Jul 11th, 08, 12:36 PM I go back a LOT futher, Class of 1963, Burlington City HS, NJ.
I had a '53 Chevy 6 banger. My friends had cars such as a '62 R2 Studeabaker GT Hawk, 4 spd which was very quick. Another had a '62 Chevy 409, 4 spd, which was the fastest car in the school at the time. There was a '61 Ford 390, that was a dog, also a '58 Chevy 348 PG that sounded good - but couldn't cut it in the quarter. Also a '39 Chevy coupe, in gray primer, 283, dual carbs, 4 sp that was always on the street.
After graduation, I bought a '64 Chevelle SS convert, 4 sp 327/300, got beat the first week by a 383 Dodge SW....added a 4 x 2 carb set up, and 411 rear, MT's in the rear, didn't lose after that.
Cars in the area that raced:
A red '64 Chevy convert, 427 4 spd owned/driven by a teenage girl!
A nice '65 Chevelle 4 spd 327/300 in Evening Orchid.
Black '59 Chevy 4 spd 283 FI;
'57 Chevy BA, with tilt front end, 327, 4spd;
Green '62 Triumph Hearld, 4 spd, with dual Webers and very low rear ratio;
Dark Blue '63 Chevy 4 door with a 409, 4 spd that was a real sleeper on the street.
White '64 Merc Comet GT, 289, 4spd.
And a maroon a Jag XKE 4 spd some wealthy kid owned.
I also put together a '57 Chev wagon, 389 Pontiac, auto that was "exciting" to drive.... put hard to stop!
We raced at Taylor's Lane in Delran; Inductotherm near Mt Holly (where they actually had a christmas tree for starting most nights) and all over southern Rt 130. Atco and Cecil County later on.
Street Racing was king back then. Too dangerous now.
( I have an 18 yr old son now......!)
MrBill66Malibu Jul 11th, 08, 2:13 PM Farmingdale HS LI NY class of 79
My school was very large but a upper class place that i was just lucky enough to go to. Car scene was mostly late model camaro and firebirds that my 67 fairlane 289 4 speed was notorious for killing them!!!
A big shot in town with a T/A learned his lesson late one friday night :D
The Fairlane wasn't the fastest car around but it did win 80% of the time, due to a lot of kids didn't know how to drive!!!
Every night I raced, after I beat these guys I would open the hood to show the 289 :D
There where a lot of overcammed and over carbed cars back then.
30-A rider Jul 11th, 08, 4:01 PM St. Mary's 1986 South Amboy NJ
My 1966 Chevelle SS that I still have today. Another guy had the same car. Mine Primer Gray his original Yellow Color fresh paint (father owned a Body shop). That was it in my whole high School for Hot Rods. Mine with a 350 I built with my father. My first motor and it was mostly stock but with mild cam, intake, holley carb, headers. 4 speed and 3.90 posi. The other guy had the orginal 396 but backed by a Th400 and 3.73 gears. From a light he smoked me and I was so Very pissed to loose at 17 years old. I drove home and vowed to never drive th car again till I could build a big block. Took me several years later and some maturing to realize there is always gonna be someone faster.
Timmer Jul 11th, 08, 4:42 PM http://i38.tinypic.com/2aahhmr.jpg Hot rods how about in 1963 a 17 year old high school snot going to take every one in town with his 34 Ford roadster. BigRed-L72 Jul 11th, 08, 9:09 PM Living in Southern California during the height of it all 68-70 there were unreal cars at my HS..Narbonne HS in Harbor City.
My 64 Impala 327/4 spd/4:56 car ran 12.86 ET.
I had my 64 Impala "hottie" AND a 63 SS Impala Low Rider.. just loved my cars !!!
Some 11 second cars in there and one in the 10`s !! a 64 Olds Cutless with a tunnel ram .060 over 427.
Swiss cheesed frame...straight axel beast with lettering down the side (all pro done stuff) that said "CONQUEST" ended up in the magazines...very stout.
My HS parking lot looked like a car show..in fact the HS newspaper had a weekly "FEATURE" car..it might have been a slammed in the weeds/on the frame candy/pearl/flake electric door handle Low Rider or a Custom dune buggy or a "HOTTIE"
Andy Dasso had a neat car a lowered 64 Cutless with a 440 that he raced at Lions Drag Strip..a real sleeper.
Big $$$ . Mostly "daddy`s " I`m sure or drug $ (not Andys though)
454regal Jul 11th, 08, 9:59 PM class of 01 antioch california not really a hot rod scene most of my friends were into imports.Lots of fox 5.0 mustangs, couple third gen camaros for some reason lt1 camaros/firebird were in,I was always a g-body guy i had a 83 cutlass supreme 2-door with a olds 425 big block. Most cars i raced were hondas.
langss Jul 11th, 08, 10:30 PM Winter Class of Van Nuys High School 1966
Lots of Hot Rods as in 32/40 Fords with Small Blocks,Tri Five Chevys, lots of late model muscle cars.It was a very interesting time to be 18. Cruising Van Nuys Blvd and Bob's Big Boy.Five bucks would fill the tank and you could do it all weekend.I had a 56 Belair with a 283 and a three speed. It got rear ended and I upgraded to a 62 409 Impala.Boy talk about Poopin in tall cotton,Just opening the hood would scare away would be challengers.Wish I still had that car, but the Chevelle didnt get away, and now I can cruse the one remaining Bobs in Toluca Lake.
MICHEV Jul 12th, 08, 2:41 AM Class of 83,used to hang out at Duke's.Street racing every friday and saturday nite. That was alot of fun back then.
Herb Jul 17th, 08, 8:30 PM Class of 65. Had a 59 Chevy. We used to hang out at Tops Drive In burger joint in Falls Church VA. It was a scene right out of American Graffiti. We used to go up the road a piece to a side road where we had a 1/4 mi marked off on the pavement and drag race. Oh yeah, and gas was $.29 a gallon.
fabio Jul 17th, 08, 9:23 PM my school was weak, we have no local strips and at the time most kids ran honda's. One kid had a late 70's vette, another a v6 trans am, 2 mustangs with 289's, one chevelle with a 350, and a nova with 350. Let's just say my vw cleaned house. The muscle car croud had headers, performer intake and flowmasters. Imports were also the usual bolt ons.
68bye Jul 17th, 08, 10:20 PM Class of '91
My 64 Chevelle, 325 hp, 327. My friends original 350 SS 70 Chevelle 'vert. I would wash my car almost every day and use lemon pledge on the interior and brake fluid to shine up the tires. There was some street racing but not a lot
pdq67 Jul 18th, 08, 11:57 AM Back in '65!!
There were NO muscle cars around our little-bitty, 458 population country town back when I was in HS except for my long gone Crippled Buddy's '58 'Vette ragtop w/ the Z-30 cammed 375hp/327 FI engine and Gene's hopped up '55 292 "Y" block Ford!!
Ooop's, almost forgot Daisy Dale's ORDERED new Black '63, Ford 425hp/427 Galaxy 4-speed, posi H/T.. You talk about a boat that would get up and RUN!!!!!!!!!!
Outside of them, my '57 Chevy pretty-much was the car to beat. And Ray's '57 beat it regularly b/c his was a PP!
And Mom's new '65 195hp/283 Chevelle Custom 300, 3-speed el-cheapo ran FINE!!
But boy did we run the roads late at night!! Wide open every chance we got after midnight everywhere!!
He, He!!

Dan Orgill Jul 18th, 08, 12:18 PM Nothing of note at my high school. There was one girl who father bought her a 1970 GTO ( this was in 1987, so it wasn't too expensive to get one ).
She drove it to school occasionally. My best friend at the time inherited some money when his Dad died, so he bought a Buick GN with 16,000 kms on it. She pulled up beside him at the stoplights about 1/2 mile away from the school. They were just talking back and forth, but her passenger, and guy named Gary ( of the " rocker " crowd ) started trash talking ( friendly style ) my buddies GN.
They had an impromptu race, and after that she was driving one sore goat, because it got whipped.
PaPa Johns 77 Jul 18th, 08, 12:49 PM 1970 Here! Wide range of hot rods at my school. I had a 66 GTO 389 4 speed among others in the 4 years. One of the hottest was a Studebaker Lark R4 that had be changed over to a well built 327 Chevy with a 4speed. One cops kid had a straight axle 57 Chevy 2dr hdt 427 4 speed. A couple 64 Chevy IIs one a 4 speed car. There was one Camaro a 68 convertible red with white 4 speed car it was probably the best looking car at school! 49 Merc chopped top and all powered by a Caddy engine. 32 Deuce small block Chevy powered.
65 Pontiac 2+2 421 4 speed. Three Olds 442s of various years. Oh! and a few hippie vans too!:D
I could go on and on but there were also a lot of granny cars too! I started HS in a 54 Belair 4 door the graduated to a 62 Buick Special 4 door with a big 215CI Engine!:D The GTO came later.
We all would gather in down town Kankakee and cruise the square (about a 3 block by 6 block area with several parking lots to stop and talk in! They eventually turned one street into a one way to break it up and then dead ended another all in an effort to drive the crowd out. Then they would roust us out of the parking lots posting 15 min. parking after 5:00 PM signs.
It eventually died in the mid 80s.
5 years ago a group of us went to the city and asked to set up a cruise night a couple weekends a month in the summer and they refused to here us through. There are other smaller towns near by that are allowing it.

Wolfplace Jul 18th, 08, 2:34 PM Bunch of kids,,, :D :D
Sorry Tom,
I know this belongs in bench racing but it is still a pretty cool thread & I never post over there anyway so,,,,
Class of 59, Berkeley CA & I lived through most of the Amercian Graffitti days.
Still remember getting that 101MPH club sticker at Fremont,,,,,
Mel's Drive In was the favorite hang-out,,,,
I had a number of cars over those years a few of which were:
A 50 Mercury flathead,
53 Studebaker, a couple of others I can't remember right now
On to a 55 Chevy with a 292 then a 301.
55 Chev 2 door wagon.
58 Chevy Panel with a factory FI 327,,, looked like a damn delivery truck,,,
60 Ford Falcon with a 427 Chevy that was driven to work every day,,
65 Chevelle post with a 427 then a 482
Then on to my 69 Camaro & 74 Vega
Then to AFD & Blown Alcohol
Hell, even drove the dragster in More American Graffiti for Milner at Fremont in some of the scenes.
It had the Santo's families blown small block in it for the movie & I was the driver for Santos so,,,,
They really were the "good old days" :beers:
Here is the "short" version of them for me::
Started out street racing in the bay area mostly in Berkeley, Richmond & Oakland in the early 60's
Had a number of my own cars & started bracket racing at Fremont, Sac, Sears Point, Vacaville, Half Moon Bay, Lodi, Redding, Oroville, Samoa & a few other tracks around the bay area that are mostly all gone now except for a few like Sears, Sac & Redding & Samoa.
My Camaro ran low 10's & hi 9's & the Vega ran pretty consistent 9.20-9.40 with a best of 8.97 / 155
I drove for a number of people including the Santos family & before that a couple of front engine A/F dragsters, rear engine A/F dragster, front & rear engine B/F & then AADA dragster now known as TAD
Partly because I was considered very good at driving just about anything I got into but mostly, at least I feel,,,, because I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity.
I was offered rides in a number of cars besides the dragster including a funny car that belonged to some people in the South Bay & a BBG/S Anglia that belonged to a guy that last I heard still races in the Nostalgia drags in AAG/S named Steve Woods & was actually paid to drive Santos's TAD.
Pretty cool to get paid to do something you really love doing!!
I drove both my Vega & the TAD at a number of the same races at Fremont (Baylands) & Sacramento for a few years until I sold the Vega around 1978 or so.
That was a bit much though as if we did good in both cars it got a little "challenging to make it to the starting line for the next round in the other car.
I ran the Vega in B/MP. C/G, C/A A/MP, Pro Gas & Pro Stock classes at different times when. When Pro stock first started they had a West Coast Pro Sock Assn, where we would go to Fremont, Sac, Redding, Bakersfield, Irwindale, Arizona, Oregon etc & get paid a little to put on a show. Nothing real professional but it was fun & paid for part of the racing.
Won the AHRA Nationals in the Camaro at Fremont & set a new A/HR record.
Runner-up at the AHRA Winternationals in A/HR in Phoenix
Runner-up at the NHRA Winternationals in C Altered in the Vega at Pomona
Won lots of division 6 & 7 points meets in the TAD of Santos & won the division championship when it was div 6&7 combined for one year in 1983 which was the last year I drove in competition at a divisional race.
I am still licensed in both TAD & Pro Stock & was doing some testing until the last couple of years for some folks I know.
Best of the "old" runs:
7.05 201 - 414 inch Chry (5/8ths stroker 354)
7.01 205 - 358 inch small block BFD
6.28 217 - 358 inch small block TAD
8.97 155 - 482 inch rat in a Vega
More recently,
5.47 270 - 450 inch hemi TAD
8.52 167 - 540 inch rat in a 48 Anglia
Thanks for the trip down memory lane guys :beers:
Rick Dorion Jul 18th, 08, 2:45 PM Wow.

jch1805 Jul 18th, 08, 2:51 PM Cool thread.......
I was class of 88, graduated in southwest Mississippi, we had some nice cars running around town. Fastest back then was a 55 2 door post running 11.90's on its best pass.Man we come running when it fired up in the parking lot.I had a 68 camaro 275hp white with black stripe with Keystone classics. It wasn't fast but man did it get alot of passengers, hehe.Never forget the day my folks insurance got cancelled because I had several tickets they didn't know about.
I had to sell it right after graduation to help pay for college. I went to Nashville Auto Diesel College. Now we weren't the cream of the crop students but muscle cars from all over.Back then a clean car could be bought for 3500.00 to 5000.00 and ride.Thats were I first heard of a 383 sbc. Helped a guy build one and agrued with him the whole time about why would anyone want to stroke a 350. Man did I eat my words when we took it out a Briley Parkway and broke it in.Boy was I clueless.
jch1805 Jul 18th, 08, 2:56 PM Had to post one more thing, I had a friend that his father gave him his 2nd owner 1970 Chevelle 396, 4spd,12 bolt 3:31 gear car.It was orange with white interior, white vinyl top, and white stripes. That thing would "yonder" on the top side.I've been trying to buy that car 15 years now. I lost track of it last summer.I dropped a many a beer top in the back seat of that thing.:beers:
SILVERSS454 Jul 18th, 08, 3:45 PM I'll jump back in here again, this thread is just full of great stuff...anyway, we used to race on a bridge outside of town that was just over a 1/4 in length. Saw TONS of races and raced alot myself. It was no problem seeing 5-6 races at a time back to back. Winners would take anywhere from $50 tio $200 home with 'em and of course bragging rights for that night. Don't remember a lot of fights associated with racing and that was good. You run what you brung and if it wasn't good enough, you learned to negotiate a couple of car lengths the next time. Our town was just big enough that rumors of new motors and nitrous setups would start circulating on a Monday or Tuesday and by Friday or Saturday, the races would be taking shape. Mopar 440's and 383's, big block and 302/351 F**ds, tons of small block Chevy's, a few big blocks and even some Pontiac 400's/428's and 455's. Olds and Buick were represented too. There was quite a variety. The guys that worked in the machine shops always had the best stuff but, they could be beat by those backyard wrenchers. Cars were cheap and so were parts. My first set of BBC Thrush headers cost me $69 from a mail order catalog. I still have 'em too! Most everybody ran hydraulics or solids. Only a couple of rollers could be found in small block Camaro's.
Guys, keep posting. This thread is really great!
El Camino Kid Jul 18th, 08, 8:41 PM Class of '67. I was the class nerd. Rode a Schwinn 10-speed, but not to school. Life was embarassing enough without drawing attention to my self. Two weeks before graduation, a pair of cute twin girls with a rich daddy, bought them each a new Stingray convertible. If I'd had a gun, I'd have shot myself. Damn...I'm glad that part of my life is over. Now I cruise my '67 El Camino and wonder "if only they could see me now"!

bobj_70 Jul 20th, 09, 11:49 PM well, i havent graduated yet, but i'm probably one of the very few to have a classic car
65lkey Jul 20th, 09, 11:54 PM well, i havent graduated yet, but i'm probably one of the very few to have a classic car
right on man, I was class of 08 and i was the only kid with a classic, everyone either drove honda, volkswagons or jeeps
matattack68 Jul 21st, 09, 3:01 AM Class of 94, Riverside CA. I had a 65 Chevelle, 327, with a 150 shot. Stock TH350 trans, and stock 308 geared 10 bolt.(peg leg). went 12:80's on the motor, and 12:00 on the bottle. I could only squeeze it 2nd and 3rd gear, it would blow the tire off if I squeezed it out the gate. My best friend had a 67 Mustang with a 289, with a C6 trans that would chirp every gear, and was a pretty fast car. Another buddy had a 68 Camaro, with a 350, another guy had a 66 Elky with a 327. Another guy had a 55' chevy pickup with a 283. There were a couple of 5.0 Mustangs, and some IROC's running around. I pretty much had the car to beat around school, which won me lots of lunch money. We would street race out in Ontario every Friday and saturday night. I put a lot of oxide through that 327. Sometimes we would pack up the tool box, throw the slicks in the trunk, and drive 65 miles down to Long Beach, and race at Terminal Island. I could go on for days with all the good stories I had from back then. The one that makes me and my friends laugh about still to this day was, my auto shop teacher was building some 76 firebird for a friend of his. He had just finished building a solid roller 400, with some ported heads. He kept talking smack, that when the firebird was done, that he was going to spank my ass. So to make a long story short ,the whole school showed up to watch me bust his ass by about 12 cars, and the best thing about it was on his way home he destroyed the cam and broke down 5 miles from his house. We never let him hear the end of it. Dam those were the good old days, I would give just about anything to go back in time and do it all over again. One day your in high school, chasing girls, and drag racing, 15 years later you have a house payment, car payments ,wife and kids, and trying to save a little money here and there, to finish my 68. Where did the time go?

MadmanMark Jul 22nd, 09, 7:39 PM In the Chicago area during my HS years (78-82), the new mustangs were what I remember being quickest on the street of the new stuff. They were out handled by the camaros and corvettes, but the chevys were slooooowwwww. Actually, all the new cars were on the slow and lame side. The 60's musclecars weren't everywhere to be found, but they were typically kings of the street when they were around, which is probably why I wanted to get one.
lemonice Jul 22nd, 09, 7:43 PM 1972 fort sill oklahoma. i was a 17 year old soldier. i had many hot rods while stationed there. black 67 chevelle ss 396 4 speed,68,69,70 road runners,63 ford falcon,63 ford galixe 500 w/ 390, and a few more. we would meet at waynes in lawton, then go to surplus city to street race, then back to waynes. had a speed shop named MR.QUICK. more car lots with hot rods then you could count. i almost traded for a superbird but the monthly payments of $100 were to much.i instead got the 68 road runner 383 auto on col. those were the days for sure. got alot of (improper start from stop) tickets there.

Jerry70 Jul 22nd, 09, 10:30 PM Graduated Hayward High, CA, in `66 and, with a few exceptions, the student parking lot was much more impressive than the teacher's. I started out with a `55 Ford 6 banger, traded it for a `55 Chev pu with a 394 Olds and 4 speed Hydro, and by the time I graduated I'd traded that for a `56 MG. Some of the luckier guys got new cars for their 16th birthday. We had 2 `65 L79 El Caminos, I `65 Impala 327/4spd, 1 GTO auto (chick's car), and 1 GT 350 Mustang. These days I'm more impressed by some of the older cars there though. One girl had to suffer with her parents `56 Chrysler 300B convertable (yeah, it's got a hemi). The coolest car in the teacher's lot had to be the FI `57 Pontiac, also a family hand-me-down.
Chevelle408 Aug 13th, 09, 6:01 PM I'm barely out of HS, class of '08, and our hot rod scene wasn't anything compared to most of yours! I grew up in a small town in middle Ga. A buddy of mine had a 13 second Nova with a 350/M21 and I had the Chevelle all through school. The rest of the cars were newer than ours. There were two guys with foxbodies, one ran 14s and the other did low 13s with a turbo. Then there was the "fastest car in school," a Ford Lightning that ran high 12s. He knew the Chevelle had him beat, so he always had an excuse why he couldn't race. The other car guys at school were the Honda guys who couldn't seem to wear their hats straight, but we never really hung out with them. :D
None of us ever got around to racing eachother, but that will change when the temps begin to drop this fall. I'm gonna drag that lightning down the track.
Here's one of the few pics I have from the HS parking lot.

classicfan1 Aug 13th, 09, 10:07 PM Makes me sick that almost everybody my age thinks rice grinders and rap is a Hot Rod scene. I don't have a car yet, still working my butt off and no luck. One of these days...hopefully...maybe...I can only hope. Some good stories:thumbsup:
OrrieG Aug 13th, 09, 11:08 PM Class of 68. I drove a 60 Impala 283 4 bbl 3 speed 3.56 rearend. It was my second rig, first was a 47 Ford Pickup. Friends had 63 Ranchero with 289, Jeepster with "Firedome" Hemi, 29 sedan deliver with 327, 60 corvette, 68 factory 396 Camaro, 66 SS, 56 Ford Crown vic with 390 Tbird engine, 63 Impala with Corvette 396 and 4 wheel discs, Suzuki X-6 Hustler. In the two years after I had a 55 Belair w/ 327 4 speed, 57 Chevy 210 with a 365/327 M21 from a Vette and 4.56 Old rearend and lightened for street racing, and a 57 Chevy pickup. Friends got 40 ford with 289, 36 Ford sedan delivery, 36 ford convertible, 55 Chevy highboy, 49 Ford with straight axle and Nail head buick engine, 60 Studebaker pickup with Caddy engine and trans. There were two places out of town we raced. Two things stand out from that, one was when a kid got sideways in a SB Nova and hit a telephone pole, he went thru the windshield and was killed instantly. Second was getting busted at a Saturday afternoon race session by Sheriff who issued about 160 tickets for vehicle inspection stuff mine was for defective mufflers and no wipers. A friends dad was a lawyer and he got them all thrown out because of a technicality, can't remember what is was now. It was a different time, relatively small city, and we knew all the cops and tow truck drivers from hanging out at the same coffee shops late at night. When I got drafted in 1970 a couple of the cops heard I was going after I had sold my cars (I figured I was goning to Viet Nam) and told be while they were glad they wouldn't have to be keeping track of me any more they wished me good luck. I think they respected the fact that we always did our mischief out in the country away from other people. All of us turned out to be respectable citizens dispite our borderline hoodlum image back then.
sschevellefan Aug 14th, 09, 12:40 AM 1991 was my freshman year but I remember there was a 68 camaro that was pea grean with bin N little`s solid centerlines, a 68-72 nova that was black primers with a gear drive and a 4spd, and a 66 chevelle showcar that came to school only once. The guy with the camaro has had several 67-69 camaros and alot of them have been in the magazines. His dad has had a ton of magazine cars too. My favorite car though was a yellow and white 55 chevy from the othe high school. Everyday I`d sit at the bus stop and he would roll by about 15 minutes later. He had a 383 and was running mid 12`s. I loved that car. Another car I remember that started my love for chevelles was a marron 64 with a loud erson geardrive anda 327. He was just out of school but I would see the car almost everyday. I ended up meeting him a few years later and he is still my closest friend today even though he lives half a country away now. He still has a 64 but not the same one. I was just talking to him today about the old days. I miss those days.
steve_sutherland Aug 14th, 09, 1:19 AM Well i just finished grade 12 and am going back for one more semester, my HS parking lot is all civics, sunfires, focus's and a bunch of chevy 1500 trucks and one nice 99-ish Ram diesel, and the of course my 1970 El Camino, other than the diesel my car is the fastest and draws the most attention in the lot, and I LOVE IT!
the heckler Aug 14th, 09, 10:11 AM 1982 was my hs grad year at central high in sprawling phenix city alabama. we had few nice cars around. I had a 69 malibu that was born with a 307 pg. later changed to a somewhat aggresive 350/th350 and a 3.55 posi. was pretty quick. my best friend had a chocolate brown 72 ss 350 chevelle which kind of started my chevelle thing. there was a propane powered big block 72 ss el camino that was orange and black. this guys dad still has a back yard full of classic chevys. a few novas. nice mustangs of course the rich boys with thier t/a's and camaros that were dogs about performance. we had a sonic drive-in in town that was the local hangout. you would see several hot rods on fridays and saturdays that would come over the bridge from columbus ga and ft benning ga to "pick" on the locals. remember one soldier from ft. benning that had a 69 t/a with the big motor in it. wicked fast but he totalled it out. another guy from columbus had v8 vega wagon with tunnel ram 2-4's and nitrous. fortunate enough to take a ride in it one time. those were the days...glad I survived them !!
64elkynss Aug 15th, 09, 4:39 AM There was plenty of muscle in my hs parking lot in '82: '68 Chevelle SS396, '71 Mustang Mach 1, '71 Chevelle 350, my '71 Pontiac LeMans (ha), '79 Z28, and quite a few others that have evaded my memory right now. 64elkynss

My dad grew up in Columbus. He went to Columbus High and Shaw, graduated class of '80. He had a '55 Chevy, '69 Chevelle and a '74 Grand Prix SJ. Ya'll could have seen eachothers cars around lol, small world.
70ChevelleRagtop Aug 15th, 09, 8:22 AM We used to have a remote street north of town that we would line them up on.
Lots of fast cars back in the mid 80's at my high school. Here's some photos of my daily driver from back then. It is a '71 Malibu with a tunnel-rammed 355. That is graduation day when I have the suit on!
