OK, I give- how do you get the headlight switch to release the pull knob??

Pull the knob to ON, press the brass button (on the side of the switch) in and pull knob all the way out

To add to this.

There is a small spring loaded brass button on the side of the switch, way up under the dash.

To remove the knob and shaft, you push the release button and pull them out. The switch will stay in the on position by the way.

Sometimes it takes a lot of fiddling to get it to release.
