: Who runs electric cooling fans on a BB?

I just bought 2 12" 800cfm cooling fans and a thermostat. I'm putting these on a three core radiator. Can these be used by themselves or should I keep my fan with them. The car will see mainly street use and very rarely ever see a track if ever.

I have a 66 with a 406sb with an electric fan. I did go with a aluminum radiator to help compensate for not having an engine fan on it. Now mine has a shroud that is made of polished aluminun as well to increase the cfm pull of the fan. I have one electric fan good for 2100 cfm. It works good but I also have a victor jr water pump and a high performance thermostat to really let if flow. I don't have any issues. Cruising around or on the highway it is real cool 170-180 right now since it is sping time. In traffic it is the same but the fan usually will come on at about 220 or so.

I have a ford windstar fan setup and a copper-brass-lead(?) 4 core radiator, on(manual on)-off-on(185 off 200 on) switch, and it keeps the engine between 185 and 200 all the time.
The only issue I have is that even with my creative trimming, the fan and essentially shroud that comes with the fan looks great, but the exposed wiring is certainly less than show quality.
I also run a march serpentine system and I forget which pulley, power steering maybe, comes within like 1/4" clearance between the big motor of the windstars fans two motors and the pulley.
If you don't need show quality looks, this thing cools like a monster and would be killer with an alum radiator.
I just personally don't like the way alum radiators look.

Alot of folks here have great luck with the Mark VIII fans or Windstar fans, people have wiring diagrams for you to use, and all that. They work fine. If I was to buy a fan that looked better at some point (say the windstar fan croaks), I really don't know which brands are good enough to cool a BB that only sees around town and 55mph 2 lane (1 each way) highway.

Windstar here too, works good...It's on a manual on/off now, I have a thermostat setup for it, but didnt get around to hooking it up last season. It cools well, the shroud fits the stock radiator really well, but I'll have to agree, there's no really neat way to do the wires...but I have them tie wrapped together as nice as possible, and I drilled the shroud in a couple places and attached the wires so they're not all over the place. Im not into show quality anyway, as long as it's fairly neat, Im happy. :D

I've been looking at the late model Windstar fans for my 454 Chevelle. The later models appear to have pancake motors and should fit a bit better than the earlier one's. Here's a link to fans.

ps: I am not sure of the dimensions but the newer model should fit better than the older model.
My local wrecking yard wants $100 for a 10 year old windstar fan. Makes my decision easier.

Bill, do you know the specs on those fans? Like the height? I don't have much clearance on the 64 with a lwp setup. Nicer looking, and cheaper, too. Probably have to invest in one of them setups.

I hear ya man! I had to move my fan over about 1.5" from center and up to clear the PS pulley. I have about 1/2" clearance now so I hope the motor doesn't torqe over too close to the fan.

If you look on this site in the cooling and heating section there are threads there on this subject. On there they spoke of the winstar and the taurus fan. One fella put a link to one site, where they are using the taurus fan. I did a google search on taurus fan and found all kind of stuff. After reading this stuff I went to the junk yard the next day and got a taurus fan for under $20. I have spent another 20-25 bucks on fuses, starter solenoid, and a diode. They say the taurus fan draws 30 - 40 amps when running, and around 100 for a split second when starting. I have not installed it yet, but will be soon. It is suppose to flow just over 2000cfm. I am putting it on a 4 core copper/brass rad. from a 76 chevy truck. It seems it will clear my P/S and more importantly my small blower. It will probably cool better than what I have now, since I only have a 15" fan with no shroud. It is keeping the motor cool now, but it is only in the 70's outside. Well I better stop now, my meds get me hyper, and I start babbling. If you have any questions on the diode or anything just ask/ or email. On mine though my fan will run contnuous till I feel more like getting fancy. graemlins/boring.gif
P.S. The Taurus fan is also a 2 speed fan, and they can be found on other Fords.

The fans shroud is a little small and wouldn't fit up as well as the Windstar fans, but V6 FWD Ford Contours/Mystique/Cougars have nice dual electric fan setups.

I have one on my '92 Mustang GT that cools my GT40 motor nicely

Its also popular to throw on some Dodge Intrepid (& clones) dual electric fans on these cars. Same basic dimensions. But I couldn't find one that hadn't been wrecked in the front end.

I have dual flex-a-lite fans on my 66 chevelle. They are pullers. I will try to post some pics tomorrow.
