: 72 chevelle SS Convt
F Koeder Jul 7th, 08, 1:34 PM I am in need of vin info on a 72 Chevelle SS Convt Vin # 1D67U2R517612. NADA books list a Malibu Chevelle SS Convt. in the price guide. I have been told that the convt Vin was listed D code & not a C. Is this correct ? All the parts on the car match up With Chevelle SS, Dash, Rear suspension Etc. Thank You Frank
huffhuff Jul 7th, 08, 1:59 PM 1D67 is correct for Malibu and SS convertibles.
mmurphy77 Jul 7th, 08, 2:11 PM All 1D67 does is make it a Malibu convertible. The SS package was an option on that model but the vin does not automatically make it a true SS (probably is though). The engine code "U" in the vin was available in the SS as well as the Malibu 400.

I agree!
The 'U' in the vin denotes a 402 big block engine was factory installed.
DaleM Jul 7th, 08, 3:32 PM A VIN containing 1Cxxxxx in 72 is a base Chevelle and could only be a 2-dr coupe (model #37), 4-dr sedan (model #69), El Camino (model #80), or one of two Greenbrier wagons (models #36 or #46).
F Koeder Jul 7th, 08, 6:38 PM THANK you. So how do I get beyond the probably is? It sounds Like the vin could be for A Malibu or a Chevelle. Other than the fact that all the parts match up for a Chevelle SS Dash ,rear end etc. Frank
DaleM Jul 7th, 08, 7:21 PM Chevrolet began screwing things up in 1970. While the Chevelle family name continued (just like Camaro, Nova, etc.) the base model was renamed the Chevelle Standard (134xx series). In 71, the Standard was dropped and the base Chevelle was simply called Chevelle (still 134xx series).
Technically, it's not a Chevelle series with 1D in the VIN, it's a Malibu. The SS was an option just like A/C or a radio available only on the Malibu sport coupe, convertible, and sedan pickup models. The round gauge pod was also available on any of the Malibu series when the gauge package was ordered. On the other hand, the SS option included the round gauge pod but did NOT include the auxiliary gauges such as tach, amp gauge, or water temp gauge.
So, from the factory, round gauge pods with warning lamps would be a SS option item only; round gauge pods with gauges could be either an SS optioned Malibu or not.
Note too the SS option could be had with any optional V8 (350-2, 350-4, 402-4, or 454-4 engine). Any of these engines could be ordered without the SS option except the 454. The LS3 402 engine did not require or come with the SS option in 71 or 72.
Only a build sheet, bill of sale, etc. would indicate if it was born with the SS option. The warranty card (POP) wouldn't even indicate it since a particular engine was not specific to the SS as it had been from 1966 through 1970.
cpo122455 Jul 7th, 08, 8:09 PM Dale, clarification. The '71 V8 402 WAS available in both SS and standard??
DaleM Jul 7th, 08, 9:26 PM Dale, clarification. The '71 V8 402 WAS available in both SS and standard??Need to define 'standard'. If you mean was it available in SS and non-SS Malibus, yes. The LS3 in 1971 is listed as being an option on V8 models; no distinction between the base Chevelle (134xx) or Malibu (136xx) series. Only the 454 required the SS option.
Dave Birdwell Jul 7th, 08, 9:58 PM And of course, it's an Arlington built car. Only a couple of places known to find build sheets in them. One is under the sound deadener tar paper under the carpet. Usually in the front floor somewhere. Another I believe is rolled up and behind the front "A" pillar inside trim. Thats about the only sure way to know, other than a real window sticker or an original order sheet.
F Koeder Jul 7th, 08, 11:18 PM Thank You All, You all have made it clear. Thanks Frank
cpo122455 Jul 8th, 08, 7:40 PM Wow, to summarize, there is no way to authenticate a SS without a build sheet?
DaleM Jul 8th, 08, 9:57 PM Roger, copy - unless it has a number matching 454 engine, then it has to be an SS optioned Chevelle.

A 72 with a "W" in the VIN is an SS, numbers matching motor or not...
DaleM Jul 9th, 08, 12:10 AM A 72 with a "W" in the VIN is an SS, numbers matching motor or not...So true for 72. It then becomes a matter of one's personal decision if it matters whether it was born an SS or not without the original engine. :)
72convertibless454 Jul 10th, 08, 12:38 PM Thanks guys - I enjoyed reading all your posts. Love those 72's:yes:
