: Alternator belt cut through my lower radiator hose...

I posted pics of the setup a while back in this thread:

Got the car on the road and after about 100 miles the belt wore through the lower hose (it wasn't touching at first) and spilled all my antifreeze. I was running a stock-type molded hose is there something else I can do? Im guessing it runs so close because I'm not running a smog pump and I don't want to so is there either a way to remedy the distance or a hose to get so I can work around it? Thanks a lot.

did you have the proper lower hose for your application? i've never seen one hit like that. i think most oem hoses kick back a little bit when they come off the water pump. there were a lot of cars and trucks with long water pumps that didn't have an AIR pump installed at the factory- and a whole lot of cars and trucks that have had the pump removed later on.

I remember working on a car ( I think it was a Chevy or Olds ) where one of the belts ran close to the hose. The factory solution was a screw type hose clamp with a thin piece of stainless steel spot welded directly to it. The stainless was curved to match the radius of the hose so the belt would catch the edge of the piece. If that won't work for you a more elaborate solution would be to adapt a idler pulley assy. ( like the one used on a '63 -'65 Corvette w/ sp. hi-perf. 327 ) to bring the belt out and away from the hose.

Hey Derrick thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure it's a proper hose, it fit with no problems but it definitely comes straight off the pump without kicking back at all. I will look into getting one that does, though.

FWIW I think you're alternator belt is in the wrong groove on the crank pulley.

My alternator belt utilizes the first groove on the crank pulley. Hope this helps.

Been there, know all about it!

The easiest thing to do is hunt up a short piece of tubing, cut the hose and install the tubing where the belt rubbed the hose!

I still have the OEM top hose done this way, way back when my B-i-L broke my motor mounts in the trunk!

I think you may have some mismatched pulleys involved. You mentioned in your other thread that you had to shim the pwr. steering pump about an inch! And in the pic you can see that your alternator is shimmed back about 1/4".

:confused:Is it just me or does anybody else think that alternator belt is in the wrong groove on the crank pulley.

:thumbsup:i agree, after looking at the photos and checking the memory banks,
the p.s.pump on my set-up had a dual groove pulley to run dual belts off the inner two crank pulley grooves.:yes:alt. belt should line up with the water pump and outer crank pulley groove.

This picture is from a better angle, about 7/8" clearance between alt. belt an lower rad. hose. Good luck.

Did you ever figure out the problem?

I was looking through a bunch of old pictures and on the LWP, the alt belt runs off the front of the crank pulley and the fan pulley.

In the old post you stated that yours were just like 1badss396 but if you notice, the alternator is running off the first groove.

Hope you got it fixed.
