: Picked up a 66 Chevelle
toomanymodz Jul 6th, 08, 9:05 PM I just bought a 66 Chevelle and had it delivered from PA. I'll post some pics below. I've owned a lot of cars over the years, but never a 66 Chevelle. This car has only 51k original miles and is mostly stock except for the goodies under the hood and the wheels. I bought it off of Ebay too. It's got the 283, glide. I'm debating on my first round of mods... perhaps front disc brakes and Vintage Air.

Wow that is pretty. Brake upgrades are a good thing. Being FL the AC deal probably is a smart one too. Congrats
Edit: I would also invest in some better rubber. Some of those econo-brand tires have a noisy harsh ride compared some of the better brands like, Goodyear, Michelin, Bridgestone etc. I believe the Grand Prix's were similar to the Grand Am's a regional chain here in the PNW sells/sold and they are crappy tires. My 69 RS/SS 427 had the Grand Ams and they were gone on the second day I owned it.
Rick Bandy Jul 6th, 08, 9:51 PM Looks to be a very clean ride and with the 283 you will probably be stopping less for gas than some of us. Unfortunately with this gas crunch I think It will have some of us letting our babys go.
toomanymodz Jul 6th, 08, 10:14 PM I've got some extra 'rubber' in the garage. BFG Radial T/A's 245/60-15 on 15x8 Rally rims with 4 1/2 back spacing. I may put those on the back and order some 15x6 Rallys for the front. I also have some 15x9's with 5 1/2 backspacing, but they won't fit, not with the 295/50's on there anyways. I don't want to go too wide on the rear either. If it had lots of HP under the hood, then it'd be a different story.
BlueSS454 Jul 6th, 08, 10:35 PM That's a nice car  Congrats on the purchase
FlameOut Jul 6th, 08, 10:45 PM Looks good!
Why is it I wasn't able to find a clean Chevelle here in PA when I was looking?
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Jul 6th, 08, 10:51 PM So Matt.. Did you buy it on ebay as the high bidder or did you work a deal after, during, before, etc??
what that little white thing cost ya.. I'll say....$16,500
nitrousss Jul 6th, 08, 10:56 PM Beautiful looking 66 Velle. But have you noticed how so many vintage cars seem to always have about 51,000 miles on 'em???? That seems to be a commonly recurring number.
Johnny-Five Jul 7th, 08, 6:09 AM Nice looking ride..
toomanymodz Jul 7th, 08, 10:48 AM I believe the 51k miles are actual. This car has all original body panels, interior, radio, glass, motor and trans, and even the spare tire is original. Most of the weatherstripping has never been replaced, and is still soft. It's been a show car for the past 10 years. You can put mirrors under this thing it's so clean and detailed.
It wasn't on ebay for very long. It was a Buy Now or Best Offer type of auction. He took my offer. I'm now the 4th owner and hopefully can enjoy this car for decades.
toomanymodz Jul 7th, 08, 11:00 AM Here are some more pics for everyone's enjoyment. ;)

garjhr Jul 7th, 08, 11:36 AM very nice indeed.....
JYags Jul 7th, 08, 11:40 AM Looks nice and clean:thumbsup:
I'm not a fan of the braided rad hose and heater hoses and anodized fittings though. Everything else looks sharp!

I'm with you. I plan on removing some of it. The battery is an Optima red top. I'll swap it with an original style Delco.

I read in one of my magazines that a 2004R overdrive transmission is pretty much a direct swap for a powerglide and you can even use the same driveshaft too. If people install overdrive transmissions in their classic cars, they may be able to get 25MPG instead of 15MPG. Much less pressure to sell then.
bowkevin Jul 7th, 08, 2:44 PM Beautiful 66. What part of Pa. did it come from? I used to see a white one near here but never had the chance to see it up close. Congratulations.
toomanymodz Jul 7th, 08, 3:53 PM Danville PA.
bowkevin Jul 7th, 08, 6:17 PM Not the same one. And I'd bet you paid more than 16,500. If you didn't you got a great deal. Around here you can't touch one already done for under 20, 000. Someone did a nice job on the resto.
toomanymodz Jul 7th, 08, 7:01 PM Thanks for all the compliments. I knew it was a gamble buying a car on ebay without ever seeing it first. But after looking over the car (and under the car), I believe I got a good deal. Paid 20k for a car that is ready to take to some shows. This car has already won many trophies in the past and has appeared in a few magazines too. The only thing I can really nit-pick on is the paint. It was repainted maybe 10 years ago and whoever did it had a dirty paint booth. The paint looks good until you look closely at it, like from a foot away. Still, clean enough for most shows.
71pipedreams Jul 7th, 08, 7:32 PM thats a beautiful car you got there. its real classy and clean, a real good summer nite cruiser!! how bout some pics of that viper(my 2nd favorite car ever!)?
f14tomcat Jul 7th, 08, 7:38 PM I am GREEN with invy, that is one sharp ride, I hope to find a 66 or 67 for my next project, I personnaly like the 67 tail lights, but , hey I would take a sharp looking 66 like that one any day of the week.

JAKE FOSTER Jul 9th, 08, 10:05 PM I gotta say those are some very nice cars. I would rather drive the 66 though but hey im partial.
Malibulvr Jul 10th, 08, 1:53 AM Beautiful car! I am not a lover of white but I would make an exception! Car looks to be very clean, great find!
jeffhaza Jul 10th, 08, 10:22 AM That's a beautiful car and I'm sure you paid more than $16,500. Selfishly, I hope you did because I picked up a 66 last June for almost twice that.
I have 15X8 Corvette Rallys all around and it sits pretty nice. I thought about going smaller on the front but I think the car has a natural downward stance from front to back. Thinking about getting a separate set of 17" Torque Thrusts.
Nice ride. Enjoy.
heada501 Jul 10th, 08, 3:46 PM Very nice Malibu! I can see why they took it to car shows. Enjoy!
toomanymodz Jul 10th, 08, 9:02 PM Thanks for the compliments. I took it to a local 'show & shine' this evening and it got WAY MORE looks and compliments than my viper. I take my viper there and it's just another car to most folks, they just walk on by.
I will say that my first mod will probably be the brakes. The single master cylinder just scares me every time I approach a stop light. I may put disc brakes on the front, or just upgrade to a dual master from www.inlinetube.com
There is a company that makes organic shoes that stop much better than the original style shoes. I think they claim a 49 foot reduction in 60-0 MPH stopping distance.
oldtimebaseballfan Jul 12th, 08, 10:54 AM Congrats Matt. You took a gamble and it paid-off.
Shevelle Jul 13th, 08, 1:21 PM http://www.cantweight.net/files/Smiles/welcome.gif Very pretty ride!
ky66 Aug 18th, 08, 4:30 PM Nice 66. I have one with a 283. When I converted to 200R4, I wanted to keep the column shift for my benchseat car. I found a kit that works beautifully in making it all work with no sweat. Here is the link:
http://www.shiftworks.com/kugel.htm The best $45 I have spent to keep stress away. Had my chevelle since I bought it from the original owner in 1977. It has 34,000 miles now. Congratulations on the double-six
