: PS pump from a Dodge Caravan
FlameOut Jul 5th, 08, 11:20 AM Maybe I was dreaming this, but I swear I saw somewhere that the power steering pump w/ remote reservoir will work on the 66-67 big block Chevelles. Was I dreaming or is that true?
This is the only item holding me back from installing my engine
novaderrik Jul 5th, 08, 12:37 PM might work, but the favorite late model PS pump is the one that GM has been using on everything since the early 90's.

They used the remote reservoir? I found one from a 67, but it's over $260. I'm not concerned with it being original, just want something that will work with the BB w/ short wp

Some of the Dodge caravans do use a saginaw pump. I had a 1988 caravan with a saginaw pump and it didn't have a remote reservoir. To use the pump on a chevelle you would need at the very least the pulley and brackets. The pump also would likely have a different pressure regulator due to having rack and pinion steering.

depending on the application, they could either have a remote or attached reservoir.
one easy and readily available pump with a remote reservoir would be off an AWD Astro van with the vortec 4.3.
FlameOut Jul 6th, 08, 12:03 PM I know this is short notice, as the auction is up in a few hours, but is this correct for a 67 Chevelle BB? I know it says it is, but sellers usually post whatever in order to sell. Is there anything additional I'd need?

That item does look right. The bracket looks like a 60's Chevrolet BB item.
Late 60's and early 70's Chevrolet pickups with BB also used a pump with remote reservoir.

Ok, thanks. I did win the auction, so now I hope the thing works when it arrives. Is it safe to media blast these parts and paint them?
chevelle66427 Jul 6th, 08, 8:08 PM that pump and bracket are correct that is the same guy i got my pulleys from he does know his stuff if pump is junk i bought mine from auto zone are putting this on a 396 i put mine on a 454 and let me tell you it was a pain if you need any help let me know

It looks like the setup on Ebay is missing the bracket to mount the reservoir to the core support. It might be avaialble repro, but you might ask if he has it too.
Edit: Yep canister bracket available at www.true-connections.com (24.95)- http://trueconnections.com/cat/page65.htm

Remove the pump from the housing and you can blast everything.
If the pump is bad you can get a pump from auto parts stores in a reservoir and swap the pumps out.
Make sure you swap over the valve if it is not included in the new/rebuilt pump.

68bye Jul 7th, 08, 9:27 AM Wow, you could've gone to any junk yard in the U.S. and got the exact same thing for about $40. Every big block truck from 73-87 had that same set up. As a matter of fact, I threw away several of these setups that were laying around from BB swaps.
vrooom3440 Jul 7th, 08, 2:43 PM Yeah some of the Chevy vans did have Saginaw pump remote fill reservoir setups that would be suitable for BB SWP setups.
Another direction is the truly remote reservoir Saginaw P-pump used on some mid-80s Cadillac V8 models. Mounting will require a bit of adjustment here though.
Be careful not to get any grit inside the PS pump when cleaning it up. You can also get rebuild/reseal kits or rebuilt pumps without the tank to put into the reservoir can.
chevelle66427 Jul 7th, 08, 3:59 PM The problem with the truck can is if your not carefull and get one with the striaght nipple out of the can it will not fit you do need to have one that has the angle on it

vrooom3440 Jul 7th, 08, 6:02 PM Good point. Good reason to just skip it and go direct to the reservoir-less style pump with full flow remote reservoir :D
chevelle66427 Jul 7th, 08, 6:20 PM Let me tell ya it took me 5 years to finally figure out what I needed

ak 67SD Jul 7th, 08, 8:15 PM yeah apparently the caravan pump is visually the same and will fit, years from 90-95 and 96-00... also the chevy BBC truck one doesnt fit... i just learned that the hard way last night! the low pressure return tube hits the wheelwell (if its the housing like i have with a U-shaped return spigot)... tommorrow i'm either going to try to bend that tube to fit, or go to wrecker and get one off a caravan...
ausleys had good prices on the brackets...

vrooom3440 Jul 8th, 08, 1:11 PM Could always pull the pump out of the can and take a torch to the return fitting. They are only soldered/brazed in. Heat it up and make it point anyway you want
chevelle66427 Jul 8th, 08, 7:06 PM If anyone is still unsure of what pump to buy here is one on ebay
Ebay #220255125729
this is the exact pump I put on my 66
after putting it together this is the only one that will fit trust me when I tell you this
