The build sheet can be found in various places, under the rear seat, behind the rear seat back, under the dash or carpet, on top of the fuel tank is where I found mine. Unless your car was built in Canada the VIN won't be of much help. GM in the USA didn't keep any information until 1977 on the cars built here. Keep in mind that sheet may have been found and tossed a long time ago.

Or there may have never been one in your car. There's no guarantee that one was left in there; you are quite fortunate if you do find one.

If your car has the underhood insulation you can gently pop it out and see if anything's behind it. Found one there on a 69 Buick Skylark, and another under the back seat :)

Build sheets were never meant to be left in the car. It was for line workers assembling the car. It was to be discarded after the car was completed. Fortunatley, some line workers discarded them in the car for use to find 35 years later. Consider yourself fortunate IF you find a buildsheet in the car.

Jon, where was your car built? Each plant was different. Although I agree with Tom.

These are the places to look....under the rear seat, behind the rear seat back, under the dash or carpet (also check sound proofing pads), on top of the fuel tank, bucket seat backs, door panels.

In my 71, I found build sheets on top of tank (1), door panel (1), and under rear seat (2). As stated early, some cars have none or ones from cars ahead or behind them in the line while others have 1-8 of them tucked inside some where. It is the luck of the draw as they were supossed to be discarded once the work/installation was completed.

Just an FYI, the 7th digit of the cars VIN tells you what plant it was built at. The body plate on top of the cowl under the hood also tells you the plant it was built at.
