: Heads and cam...

I'm building up on a 400ci small block bored .03 over and need help getting as much power out of this mouse without supercharging or nitrous. So far working my way down, I have a 14" x 6" k&n filter element sitting on top of an 850cfm Barry Grant speed demon carb. This sits on an edelbrock performer RPM air gap manifold. I'd like to know of an ideal set of heads to match up with my choices so far as well as an ideal cam. I was thinking about edelbrock victor jr. heads but don't know about it's compatibility with the RPM manifold. For my cam choice, I'd like anything that gives me high performance as well as that rough, "sounds-like-the-car-is-about-to-die" idle. I'm willing to go as extreme as possible.

Thanks for your help.

Can you afford a roller cam? For max power that's the way to go. Will your car ever see street use? Are you willing to use race gas? Do you plan on matching up the converter and rear gear with the cam? Are you willing to do the chassis work required for an extreme output engine.

"I'm willing to go as extreme as possible." I wonder if you really mean this. Or are you thinking of a radical sounding HiPerf street engine that will run for several ten of thousands of miles.

I equate a powerful motor to the "bark and chop" that only a radical cammed, high compression motor can make so go from there.

At least 11 to 1 CR. and a 290 and bigger solid cam in a small block along with open headers will give you that "bad-a--ed" race motor sound, imho!!!!
