I know this is a pretty general question and may be a little vague, but I have a chance to pick up a set of LS6 heads from someone I know. I just don't know what they are worth. They need no work and are ready to bolt on. Can anyone give me an idea of what they are worth?

About the cost of 1 new aluminum head, unless they are for a matching numbers car you're trying to restore then they are priceless! So I'd say about $1200 depending on casting # etc. ;)

If they're service replacement/LS6 crate motor heads (990's?) about $600 up to a $1000

The origonal 291 closed chamber head is a better head for a street car. It can be either make sure of what you are getting. I am not a big fan of the 990 head.

If we are talking about an original head here, if you are getting a good deal, go for it. Even if you dont want anything to do with them, they are worth a pretty penny to a collector and you could surely sell em on the net and make a sizeable chunk off of them to fund a set of heads that you really want. Depending on the casting and depending on your application for them, they may be nice for you to run. But, if you gotta pay a lot of money for them seeing that they just might be a sought after casing, than I agree that it is not worth it cause for much less money you could score a set of 049 oval port heads which are about the best oval heads of the bunch and with a little bit of mild port work, you can easily make 450+ horsepower on the stock valve size. Actually, if done right they can do better, but underestimating is a little safer.

Is there a source online that lists casting numbers for these heads (the orig)? Thanks.

I put a set of 990's on my car about a year ago and have never regretted it. Pulled off a set of oval ports with big valves (can't remember the number) but everyone here said I was making a mistake. My 468 makes way more power than it did before. I am not sure what the issue's about running them on the street are. Have not had any streetability issues. This motor runs better with the 990's no matter if you are on the street or at the strip. Pulls harder on the bottom end out of the hole and on the top end. Running 92 octane, occasionally add a little octane booster if I really feel froggy.
