Since putting the 489 in the starter labors when hot. I put the remote solenoid on and a heat shield. Some help but.......
This is an no brand new mini starter form a swap meet. I had no problems with the 396. But it ran around 195* the 489, 215* to 220* at the track or cruising.
Suggestions? New better starter?
Thanks

Have the starter rebuilt. There might be a reason it was at the swap meet. I've run a stock GM starter on my 454 and now its on the 505,no heat shield, coated headers,no start problems. You need good connections, good battery, and a good ground and the engine should also be grounded to the frame seperately from the battery ground.

the hot start problems i really do believe come from ground and cable problems and starters that are getting tired from use..........
make sure you have plenty of grounds..run one from the frame to the block and from the fire wall to the block...make sure all connections are clean.....take that remote soleniod off.....that is just another piece of equipment to loose current to.......use just the gm starter style starter!!!!!......use the biggest cables you can find by all means......at least run 2 gauge cable.............
but really there is no need to band-aid anything with heat shields and the remote soleniods................with a good starter, big cables, plenty of grounds, and clean connections, with a good battery..........this will start some of the most seriuos engines under any condition........
just one more thing i have gone threw few mini starters in my time from just wearing them out...... breaking them too.....but lets talk about wearing them out..just from use......and the brushes seem to go out fast on them and this might be what your looking at...... the brushes get wore down and the starter looses it ablity to crank....cold it is fine.....let the car heat up about 15 minutes shut it off and try to restart the car and the starter falls on its face.......this has been the brushes going out for me on them just the little amount of heat of the motor was enough to soak the internals to cause higher resistance to a problem that all ready was having high restistance when cold......

After doing all of the above, new hi torque mini starter, giant cables (0 guage),ceramic coated headers that are not very close to the starter, clean connections on the battery and starter with double grounds, MSD Ignition with timing retard on start up, brand new Optima battery, I still had starting problems!! graemlins/angry.gif I knew I had a bad connection in the ignition circuit somewhere.
Then I read in Chevy Hi-Performance about the small guage wire that hooks to the positive on the battery and goes to a little connector on the core support. From there it goes to the horn relay on the driver side of the core support and then to your ignition. I checked all those connections and cleaned them real good and since then the 12.5 to 1 540 cranks over like a rice burner!! graemlins/hurray.gif
So, check this out too if you have a Chevelle and good luck. Nick
