I just got back from looking at a 70 malibu and I can't make up my mind if I should go for it or not. It's mechanically sound with a 350ci and 350 trans. Interior needs a dash and seats. The body is fairly solid with a few bubbles here and there with one quarter needing a lower patch and the other looking pretty solid. The part I can't get past is the owner says he doesn't have a trunk key so I couldn't see inside but the car is from California. Also he says he has all the documentation with the car. I know without pictures this maybe pointless but does this sound like a $5,500 car?

A few bubbles here and there could lead to thousands depending on your intentions with the car. I would want to see the inside of the trunk also, that could lead to major repairs if needed. As far as documentation, did you see any of it? And what does he have as far as that is concerned? A lot of 5,500. dollar questions need to be answered.

well take out the back seat, get some long extensions on your ratchet and take the trunk latch off and then you can open the trunk! $5,500 sounds a little high for a project with need of patches. maybe $3,500! of course it is a 70 though:D

Yeah that's why I wanted some opinions because I don't know anything about the value of chevelles. I have a 72 that is probally in the same condition as what I just looked at except mine is stripped down. I just know the value of a 70 is better but didn't know by how much. I guess i'll stay away from this one.
Thanks for the help.

Did you look under the trunk and floor pans? If it needs the other items you mentioned, then chances are it will need more than what you described.
Seems high for a malibu that needs body panels, paint, interior work and whatever else needed to make it driveable and safe.
By the time you do all the repairs, you could have bought a nice malibu for less than what you will have spent on this.
