Just picked up a 67 ss with a turbo 400. How many cars came with the 400 compared to cars with 4 speeds for 67?

I don't know and I doubt any one else does either, GM didn't keep good records. I sure most of the big block Pontiac's, Oldsmobile's, Chevy's, Cadillac's and Buick's had them compared to 4 speeds, in their big cars. A-bodies probably fewer, it was an expensive transmission. It was also the last year for the switch pitch converter. So you might want to find one of them if you are looking to rebuild it. I'm also not to sure if Ferrari, Jaguars and Rolls Royce's were using them yet, but they did later on.

Here are the RPO production totals for 1967. The TH400 is RPO M40. Hope this helps

Thanks for the RPO list. Where can I get a copy of that? Thanks.

It's from the "Chevelle and El Camino ID Model Codes" book. A publication of the defunct National Chevelle Owners Association. I believe it's been reprinted, and can be purchased through Austley's Chevelle parts.

Around two hundred 400 turbo cars were made very rare in 67 chevelle

I think thats incorrect... I recall it was somewhere around 12,000-13,000 "Chevelles" with the TH400. Alot more than 200 units.

About 5-times as many 4-speeds, Overall about 60,000+ (BUT 4-speeds also included non-Big Block cars/Malibus/etc, where the TH400 was BB-only)...

What about the powerglide? I remember seeing two big block 67 Chevelles with powerglides when I was a kid in my neighborhood.

Powerglides were also available in the SS. Like the M20, there's no way to know how many went to SS396 cars since the M35 could be ordered in any Chevelle. Also, like the M20 which was simply an RPO code to generate the correct 4-speed for an engine (could be Muncie or could be Saginaw 4-speed), there were at least six flavors of the M35 for Chevelles in 67.

FWIW, the TH400 was only available behind a 396 engine and any of the three 396's could be ordered in the (non-SS) El Caminos as well so not all 13,272 M40s went in SS396 Chevelles.

I have reported option totals for 64-72 Chevelles under their appropriate year and they have what series/model the option was available in. Here's the link to the 67 model year - 1967 > Options by Series/Model Number

someone feel free to correct me, but i believe '67 was the first year for the TH400. at least in cars, i'm pretty sure some made it into pickups in '66.

A friend of mine here in NJ owns one..a convertible at that. It has been swapped out for a 4 speed, but he still has the original TH400 that came in the car.

i saw a guy at the good guys show a month ago with maybe the finest restored 60's pickup i've ever seen. it was a '66 3/4 camper special with a 327/ 220HP. AMAZING resto, maybe the most perfect resto i've seen. anyway, i was talking to him and he said that in '66 you could get the TH400 in heavy pickups and that his pickup still retained it's original TH400. he seemed very knowledgible. was he wrong???

remember passing on a rough (for NM standards body wise) 66 SS that had been a 396/PG with A/C as i though nobody would be interested in such a combination. Still had the twelve bolt rear axle. that axle was worth the $500 asking price alone. This was five years ago.

I am not sure of the availability in pickups, but full size Chevys had a 375 Turbo in 1966 with Big Blocks. Junked out a rough 396/TH375 Caprice woody wagon back in the day. (Boy that was dumb, but the car was worth nothing then). A TH375 was just the early version of the 400 with a few internal differences. It is often called a 400 because the two trans look the same. Maybe someone else here knows the differences. Agreed first useage of the design in Chevelles is 1967.

If I recall the 375 was basically a lighter duty trans and had the same size output shaft and yoke as a turbo 350.

Whether it's accurate or not, the Ron Sessions TH 400 book says 375 transmissions were made 1972 to 1976.

Chevrolet production report shows the TH400 was introduced in the full size Chevrolet in February of 1965 and sold 17,821 units; available in the Chevelle in 1967. Calvin's 1970-75 book indicates the TH375 was introduced sometime in 1972 and is basically the same as the 400 with a different, "... output shaft, extention and related parts were modified to utilize the same driveshaft yoke as the Turbo 350." Available on the 125" passenger car wagons with base 350/165hp and 400/170hp engines.
