: Dynomax headers install report for my 402
melrose Jun 29th, 08, 8:06 AM Bought them uncoated and had them coated locally. Installed them and had to do a little work to get the the left side on, which included- disconnecting the z-bar, steering shaft, and oil filter. Got them installed and oil filter would not go back on. Had to connect a wratchet strap from lower area of the header to LF control arm and torque the bottom of the header over about 1/2" to get the filter on. Has anyone else had this issue or did I get a "out of spec" header. I decided to leave them on since I am probably gonna change oil on this car only a few times a year. Should I call Dynomax?
Chris
Bubba's 69 Jun 29th, 08, 9:29 AM Are you using a car filter or a truck filter? You must use the car filter. PF454 AC Delco
I didn't have to take the steering shaft loose but I did take the motor mount loose on the drivers side.
blackmagic Jun 29th, 08, 10:02 AM I also Bought Dyno Max headers for My 71 402 chevelle. When I did first oil change I had same problem with oil filter.I could not remove it. Instead of pulling header over I backed out header bolts enough to move headers enough to get filter out then back in. As far as I am concerned they were poorly designed from Dyno Max.Now that they are installed there is not much You can do but live with this flaw. Brian
Jim Mac Jun 29th, 08, 12:18 PM Can you tell me if the adjusting stud fits from the outside of the car pointing in? or did you have to move the clutch adjusting rod to the inside of the Z bar? thanks jim

Jim, On My car I have the adjusting rod to the inside of the Z bar so it points out toward frame.I can't remember if this was a problem but I am sure I tried it both ways and that is the best way it worked for Me.Brian
mr 4 speed Jun 29th, 08, 1:42 PM My friend's 69 SS396 has Dynomax headers and I can get to the oil filter no problem.
I have the Summit brand headers on my 70 which are made by Dynomax and I also have no problem with either a long filter or short filter.

I also bought headers from Summit.I have no idea why but oil fliter will not go in or out without loosening header at motor. It is not a big deal but if I ever replace or buy headers again they will not be Dynomax. Brian
Jim Mac Jun 29th, 08, 5:21 PM Ive got the summit brand on my 70. filter is accessable but I had to put the rod to the inside. I just dont like the way it pushes at a angle. I ordered one of those kits with the spherical rod ends. jim

 I use a AC/Delco PF1218..just changed the oil last week..no problems
Chevl_Steve Jun 30th, 08, 7:26 AM I couldn't get my oil filter off either after installing the Dynomax headers on my 69 with a 402.
I installed a remote oil filter kit and mounted it off the alternator bracket (454 truck serpentine kit). My car is not yet on the road, but I have been running it periodically for a couple of years while I finish my restore.
I can see a couple of advantages. VERY easy access for one thing, more oil and cooler oil for another. I just add an extra half quart of oil.

Rmchevelle Jun 30th, 08, 2:22 PM So, it sounds like they changed the design of the headers. Is this part #G9010?

mine are SUM-G9010
I also have a spare set and they aren't any different than the set I bought 5 years ago...
I will certainly admit its a little tight and you will always get oil on the tube for cylinder #3 when changing the filter, but I have had everything from a 4 speed to an auto with these headers, short filter, long filter and never a problem.Obviously,a short filter is the easiest.
We even put a set on a customers 69 SS396 recenty (along with an X pipe) and there are no issues.
All of these cars are running stock oil pans by the way...

Ohhhhhhh stock oil pan .....well that's very different then. Nevermind.
I have a Moroso 6 qt chrome pan which definitely plays a part in not being able to get the oil filter off.
So yes the headers can NOT get all of the blame ....if any?

I bought My headers from Jeggs part # 28986110 Dynomax headers.I called Jeggs and they gave Me Dynomax tech #. I called Dynomax and they said they have not had any issues with the clearence of oil filter. It seems I have these stupid issues with My cars.I am used to problems with these cars. I will have to live with it for now till I buy new headers some day.I bought them as they were not as expensive as other headers but next time I will buy a better quality header.Brian
aukai Jul 1st, 08, 3:28 PM When I bought my 70 with a 454 8-10 years ago my Lakewood bell housing would not let me change any kind of filter with the Dynomax. At that time I torched the flange and it worked but bought Hookers and got a new steel bell.
