My brother has a 64 El Camino, original 283 engine, and original "3 on the tree" shifter. He wanted to replace the clutch on the transmission but does not know what type of transmission he has. Any help identifying this transmission would be helpful. He wants to keep the original shifter and engine. Thanks in advance.

Probably a Saginaw 3 speed.

Maybe the better Muncie 3-spd?
How about a pic?

Yup, a pic would settle it. But I bet, with a small block, it's a Saginaw.

As a 'truck' I think it will be a Muncie.......
Heck, 44 years old....could be most anything in there!

Thanks for the replies guys. Does a muncie or saginaw have a specific transmission pan that will help I.D. it? Any other indicating factors that will help, like a stamping number. Sorry, I dont have a digital camera to post the pictures.

The safe way (because after 44 years who knows what's in there) is to pull the trans and remove the clutch, resurface the flywheel and replace with new parts.
