: Problem with Gas tank/Licence Plate Door '69
Dan Orgill Jun 27th, 08, 1:56 PM I just bought the rear lic. plate bracket/gas tank door for my '69. It's an OER repro unit. Is it just me, or is the mounting bracket supposed to fit flush against the bumper?
'Cause this one doesn't. The bracket has a 90 degree bend along the edge of the mounting bracket that prevents it from sitting flush against the bumper ( obviously there for strength ). I'll need to use about 1/4" to 3/8" thickness of washers between the bracket and the bumper to mount it.
I'd take a pic, but my digital camera is on the fritz.
1badss396 Jun 27th, 08, 3:08 PM What are we gunna do with you Dan:D
I used my original bracket which is flat. Do you stilll have your original bracket with the spring on it?
If you do remove the spring and swap them out, thats what I did:D
Dan if you need some pictures let me know.
Dan Orgill Jun 27th, 08, 4:03 PM Brad, I don't know what to do with myself!
My original is long gone, unfortunately. ( I'll dig in the garage, but I'm 99% sure it's history ).
1badss396 Jun 27th, 08, 6:33 PM I will take a picture of mine but its on the car...
Dan you must be right behind me on your car, where is your pictures of it?
Dan Orgill Jun 27th, 08, 7:13 PM Have to get my camera fixed or replaced.
I'm still waaayyyyyy behind you, have to get my motor done still ( being done right now, actually ). Then I still need to re-install front end sheet metal, get exhaust done, order new rad & driveshaft, cut/polish the paint, finish dash wiring, etc. Still a long way to go.
Wheelhop Jun 27th, 08, 10:54 PM I bought the same damn repro lisence plate door and it doesn't fit very well. I've since bought an original one at Chevellabration (swap area). I see them on ebay all the time for around $30-$40 .

Dan Orgill Jun 28th, 08, 12:18 AM Thanks Brad!
1badss396 Jun 28th, 08, 12:24 AM Dan you have one of the new style brackets? I guess the only thing you could do is cut off the lip that causes it to stick out from the bumper so it will be flush. Or try hunting down a OEM bracket.
I have one of the ones that I think you have but I did not use it.
Dan Orgill Jun 28th, 08, 12:28 AM Brad, I was thinking of cutting the lip off. I was just on Ebay and saw some repro units for sale that look just like your pic. I'll e-mail the sellers and confirm.
1badss396 Jun 28th, 08, 12:31 AM This one will work (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LICENSE-PLATE-BRACKET-1968-72-Chevelle_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ42611QQihZ022Q QitemZ350073069890QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)
Here is an original one you can remove the bracket and use it with your new one.. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevelle-1970-to-1972-Gas-Door-License-Plate-Holder_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34204QQihZ018QQi temZ280239782160QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)
1badss396 Jun 28th, 08, 12:37 AM Dan on the original one that I posted above if you look at the picture below is the repop version just in his example and if you look close at it you can see the repop one is different bracket with the lip.
