: Picked up my 454 today
70 Elco Joe May 22nd, 04, 2:06 AM Hey guys anyone know anything about these heads?
346236.....75-87...oval...OPEN...454, 120cc chamber, 225/116cc ports
Judging from what I read they should make me a nice running 454 when I take the compression up and get a good cam. Just wondering if anyone has used a set of these and how well they will work.
73guna May 22nd, 04, 12:47 PM Hey Joe,
I got my 454 yesterday and I have the same heads.Need to know if theyre good for preformance engine , no re. in my post though.
Mitch.
70 Elco Joe May 22nd, 04, 12:55 PM From what I have found in a book there are two castings to these heads. The truck and the passenger casts. Mine are passenger casting which I believe gives them the bigger ports. I think the truck casting is peanut ports which might be what you have Mitch. Mortec doesnt show the truck set, but the chevy casting number book that the guy I bought it from had both listed. Unfortunately it didnt give the size of the runners on the truck head.
73guna May 22nd, 04, 1:03 PM Joe,
How do I tell if I have peanut ports?
Mitch.
Bob West May 22nd, 04, 1:05 PM no difference in truck/pass anymore...I believe those are the peanut port heads.

RatONaStick May 22nd, 04, 1:14 PM 236 heads are peanut ports, for a cruiser that may never see the high side of 4000-4500 rpm they will work. the peanuts have 225cc intake runners, the large ovals have 255-256cc intake runners according to www.mortec.com (http://www.mortec.com)
for a performance engine i would look for a set of large ovals, preferrably closed chamber heads which allows less dome on the piston to achieve the same compression ratio.
i recently picked up a running 454 out of a late 70's one ton truck. it has flat top pistons and 236 peanut ports, which equates to ultra low compression. my plan was to put a set of closed chamber ovals on it with steel shim headgaskets(to get the comp up) and run a small solid cam, like one of Harolds 272 or 272/282 solids. not sure what i would put it in yet, but i couldnt pass it up.
BB485 May 22nd, 04, 1:16 PM Those are late model smog heads graemlins/sad.gif They have 2.06 intake 1.72 exhaust 113cc chambers. They have the smallest oval ports for intake. Not really a good choice for performance. If you don't plan on spinning the motor past 5 grand they would be ok.
70 Elco Joe May 22nd, 04, 1:18 PM Oh well guess it sucks to be me right now. Looks like I need to sell my small block stuff to get a good set of heads. I plan on making the engine able to see up to 5000 rpm's hopefully so I will need better breathing heads. Anyone need a 4 bolt 010 small block? :D
73guna May 22nd, 04, 1:30 PM Bummer Joe! I was hoping to use mine too graemlins/angry.gif .
Looks like Im gonna have to sell off all my small block stuff too and invest in some aluminum heads.
What are you planning on doing w/ your 454? I'd like to go the 496 route w/ mine.
Good luck graemlins/thumbsup.gif , Mitch.
gigem May 22nd, 04, 1:40 PM I believe I have these peanut port heads as well. Not to hijack the thread, but what sort of HP and torque gains could be achieved by switching to a set of closed chambered oval port heads? My current setup: 454, cam is a 272, flat top pistons, edelbrock performer 2.0 intake and performer 750 cfm carb. Headers and 2.5" exhaust already in.
Any guess as to what HP this combo might make now? Would the heads make a big difference with no other mods? I want big bang for all of the bucks involved in a new set of heads!
Bob West May 22nd, 04, 1:53 PM Lots of horsepower in the heads, just minor bowl blend, pocket port, 3-5 angle vavle job will probably net 50 hp at least, with larger valves installed also.
70 Elco Joe May 22nd, 04, 2:53 PM Gonna keep mine a 454, probably just try and find a set of good cast iron oval ports off of the boards or ebay. Probably use these peanut ports as 75 lb doorstops since you cant even give them away :D
