I need a good water pump to aid in keeping my SBC 400 cool. Which one is better the Edelbrock or Stewart and what High Performance Thermostats do you recommend. 180 or 195. My engine has aluminum heads and steam holes drilled. I will also be looking for a good cheap radiator "Griffin 31X 19".

My vote is for Stewart. I picked up one for my 540. They have an excellent reputation, that's why I purchased it. I have yet to get the motor finished so I can't comment on it for sure. I suspect that it will do fine. ;)

Both very good pumps but my choice is Stewart.

I purchased a Stewart water (Corvette style short water pump, Stage III I believE) pump when I was building my engine. I found that my March water pump pulley would NOT work with the Stewart pump. With the pulley fully on the pump it rubbed the face of the water pump. I could have shimmed the water pump but that would have caused alignment problems for the rest of the pulleys. I ended up selling it to a friend with a 70' Corvette/BBC. It fit OK on his, but even required some massaging to get it to fit/work properly. Stewart does have a good recommendation, but be fore warned that you may experience fitment issues.

I use a stock cast iron GM pump from a Crate Motor I bought for $5 new...

My Edelbrock Victor Series quit after less than 1 year of use.

I have a Stewart stage 1 and it works fine.

BTW, the stage 1 pumps use a stock housing, only the enternals have been improved.

I have used the $17.95 lifetime warranty local parts house SBC pump with no issues at all for many years. They have worked well from pumped SBC in lifted 4x4s that were run hard and put away wet to a deeped geared high winding 69 Z28 for years. Never actually had to use the warranty.

Is this for the street or for strip only use. If for the strip only, no need to spend much at all. I have an $11 rebuild with a Moroso drive kit. Works great between rounds. When the car was on the street, I used the same pump but belt driven by the engine. It almost kept up.
