: Where to find latest selling prices for SUVs?
Mike O'Halloran Jun 25th, 08, 8:39 PM Folks,
I'm trying to assist my daughter in the selling of her 2006 Chevy Tahoe.
We're trying to decide whether its better to suffer a trade-in value offered by a dealer ... or whether it is better to try selling it herself through some other means [auto trader, sell-you-own lot, newspaper, etc].
However, in trying to make the right decision, it occured to me that you need to try to understand what the latest actual amount is that sell-your-own folks are currently getting for these gas-hogs. All the print-data is [at least in my mind] pre-$4.00 gas and therefore not necessarly accurate for today's market.
Do any of you folks have a suggestion as to where to find the most up-to-date info on what these Trucks are getting today on the street? We live in North Alabama. The truck is in pretty good shape and average miles.
I'm not looking to sell it here - I just want some input on how to do research.
Thanks, Mike O'H
1badss396 Jun 25th, 08, 8:57 PM Good luck selling it because the local Chevy dealership has a sale on the new ones 2008 Chevy Tahoe buy one get a FREE 2008 Chevy Colbalt car with it:yes:
Its a buy 1 get 1 Free.
Alan Jun 25th, 08, 9:20 PM I can't help you find current sale prices, but I'd say it's a horrible time to sell said Tahoe. Chevy now has 0% for up to 72mos on just about all SUV's and Trucks. That further reduces the value of trade-in trucks and selling prices. I've heard many dealers are refusing SUV and Truck trade-ins.
I would advise holding onto that Tahoe if financially possible or she'll take a servious bath on it. Is your daughter wanting a more fuel efficient vehicle?
Mike O'Halloran Jun 25th, 08, 9:38 PM Alan - yes, she is. She received the truck as part of the divorce settlement - which seemed like a fair deal at the time - 6 months ago - however, now that the Title hads finally cleared and she's ready to unload the thing, the world has turned. She's taking a bath in gas but, as has already been hinted-at, she might be better off to hold on for a while as the gas she burns [any insurance] might be better than the bath she takes in the short-run.....
In any case - as I said - just looking to see if there is actual "data" that I can use instead of gut-feeling. Thanks for you response. Hopefully I get some more feedback.

JWA Jun 25th, 08, 10:16 PM Is it a 4x4? 5.3 or 4.8? I have a buddy with an 03 2wd Tahoe and that thing gets 22mpg on the hwy with the 4.8 (CA interstate) and I think his wife avg's high teens on her commute.
That might be something to check into.
Another thing to check is craigslist. It can give you an idea of local average pricing. Should be a lot of them for sale. Having a clear title and ready to deal can help move it. A lot of other folks are probably owing money on theirs so they may not have the room to deal. She can put it on a few different websites for free to see if she gets any nibbles. Iwas watching a few different burbs out of curiosity and while they don't seem to be selling I am not seeing many fire sales on them. I think Too much money still might be owed. I am glad my 99 Burb is paid for. It's is my tow rig and if were empty it would cost $160+ to fill. It doesn't get driven much.

Dean Jun 25th, 08, 11:23 PM Folks,
Where to find latest selling prices for SUVs?
Thanks, Mike O'H
I don't think they are selling right now Mike, probably will have to "give it away."
You can find out approximately what it should sell for on http://www.edmunds.com/ IF anyone was buying one though.
chevelless502 Jun 26th, 08, 12:52 AM Not trying to be a smart ass, but go into the bathroom in your house and look cause the prices for all big trucks and suv's are in the toilet big time. Im trying to sell my lifted 2001 GMC Sierra pick up and the best offer i have had in the past month was a trade for a 78 Cutlass that he said "wasnt in bad shape".
I agree with the others, either hold onto it and try to ride it out untilll gas MAY go down or bite the bullet and cut her losses and move on as sad as it all sounds.
Good luck with the sale, i hope you can find a buyer for it at a fair deal for all,
Andy
Wooderson Jun 26th, 08, 1:03 AM A friend went to a dealer auction. Said an assault vehicle that should have been worth $12,000 wasn't bid past $4,000. No-one was buying the urban cowboy 4x4s.
Cameano Jun 26th, 08, 1:32 AM My buddy is trying to unload his built 440 powered '85 Dodge D150 pickup right now. He said he'd pay a $500 finder's fee if I found a buyer for him. I told him I'd give him $3500 for it, but I'd need that finder's fee too. :D I'm seriously thinkin' about it, though. I don't have a truck at the moment, and since I basically built that truck for him, it has a lot of sentimental value to me. I'm not kiddin' on the price, though. He started at $7k 2 weeks ago, dropped it to $5k last week, and told me yesterday give him $4k and it's mine. Since my wife told me I could buy it for $4k, I told him if he'd give me the finder's fee on top, I'd do it. I don't need a truck that bad at the moment. That thing is a beast, and only gets about 8mpg. Of course, he has to haul over the mountain every day, makes a difference. I'd be travelling flat ground most everywhere I go.
Back to the question, all I can offer is this article in this past Sunday's paper. Basically says it all.

d1_bradley Jun 26th, 08, 2:21 AM Similar to post above........... There is a dealer in Tulsa giving a car away with purchase of a Nissan Titan pickup! (Think sales might be in the dumper?)
esponet Jun 26th, 08, 2:35 AM surf the local craigslist see what those things are selling for. if you keep seeing the same add over and over again then its not selling for whatever reason. you can see which sells at what price. also look around autotrader.
chances are if its in the add only about a week then it sold for that price.
if she don't want it no more then take the loss and sell it. if she is only selling it because of gas prices, then maybe consider keeping it and getting a second car, but she has to be honest to herself. will she want that trcuk in the future? if not then take t he loss and sell.
or get collision coverage, and have some one drive into a brick wall. hopefully insurance will give you blue book value. (j/k)

I second that to see what the worth is. Edmonds takes detailed info such as model, options, condition, miles, color, and zip code to give a selling value as a trade-in, retail price, and private sale.
It might be wise for you or her to crunch some numbers before taking a bath unloading that Tahoe. For instance if say it's going to bring $8,000 less than it would normally be worth, that will buy a considerable amount of gas. Figure in the est miles per year she drives and the difference in fuel mileage of the intended replacement vehicle and the Tahoe. It might surprise her as to how long the payback period would be. If she's hellbent on selling it (maybe some other reasons involved) then save yourself the trouble.
Beaux Jun 26th, 08, 10:02 AM Might be better off with an 87 octane tune ($200.00 from wait4me performance) a gear change out back and a lighter foot.
I pulled down a solid 23 mpgs recently in my 05 GMC with a 5.3 and 3.73 gears....BUT I had to stick at 60 MPH on my trip to do it. Stay around 75 and its drops to 17.
Might be less of a hit than trading it in. Work with what you have and make it more efficient. Will at least help resale later as well.
Or buy a used civic and beat on that and drive the truck sparingly
Hi-po SS 454 Jun 26th, 08, 10:10 AM Very ruff times for sales of used or new SUV's. My neighbor has been trying to sell his nice looking Expedition for 2 months now. One bite, but he ran away squilling.......
Beaux Jun 26th, 08, 10:19 AM Theres always flares and deserted roads......or airbags and large trees....or boat ramps and "I forgot to put it in park before I got out"
:D
