: Fuel Lines
shadowgray396 Jun 25th, 08, 10:23 AM Did the 70 SS Chevelle 402, 4 speed, no air conditioning, come with the 3/8" fuel line and 1/4" return line? I'm thinking the 454 cars did, but not sure on the 402. Since the fuel lines were not on the frame when I started I have nothing to go by.
Thanks Ray
Chicken Coupe Jun 25th, 08, 11:36 AM Based on everything I have read, all hi-perf equipped cars (396/375 LS5 and LS6) had a 3/8 supply line.
My 1970 Van Nuys built coupe appears to have been built with a big block and as an SS, alas no build sheet, no where, no how, had a 3/8 inlet and 1/4 return line.
BTW, if you have a documented 70 SS Van Nuys coupe, I'd like to share photos, etc. if it help you along the way (and to satisfy my curiosity to see how much of what you have matches what I have).
Thanks,
Fred
EdCarpenter Jun 25th, 08, 11:55 AM To the best of my knowledge all but the L78 and early LS6 received the 1/4" return. Sometime in Feb. 1970 the LS6 starter getting the 1/4" return. The L78 ended to usher the start of the LS6, so it never had a 1/4" return line.

Ed, very interesting info! If I recall correctly, LS6's didn't start production until after my car was built (Nov 69). And of course no build sheet to "prove" it was an SS, but if if was an SS build, do historical facts point towards a car like mine to have more likely been an L78 vs an LS5?
Do you or anyone out there know it was common for LS5 cars to be built w/o A/C and P/S?
Just curious as I would like to badge it for what is was most likely to be when new.

My L78 didn't come with the 1/4" fuel return line. It was assembled 11/20/69 at the Baltimore plant. I have read many discussions and the earliest LS6 mentioned was 12/9/69. You can search for discussion topics on this.
I have 30% of my build sheet with the lower portion gone. The buildsheet vin matches the car and the remaining boxes, that matter, show it being what I have.
Many years ago I had a 70 LS5, canadian built. It was a non air 4 speed idiot llight dash with bench seat interior. It would be difficult to determine how many LS5's came without PS.
If the car has the original rear end, the codes can help determine whether it was a 396 or 454. Keep in mind this is only a guess.
Have you ever looked for a build sheet?
Dave Birdwell Jun 25th, 08, 9:53 PM ALL 396/350 and 454/360 cars DID have the return line. NO L78's had a return line. SOME LS6 cars do not have a return line. The time frame for the phasing in of the return line on LS6 cars vary from plant to plant.
