: vortec head questions.....
69chevelle355 Jun 17th, 04, 2:56 PM will late model vortec heads fit on older engines? i am looking at buying a pair of vortecs from this guy and he says that they are from a 96 truck. do these heads flow the same as old vortec heads?? or are they the same exact thing and i am crazy?
New68SS Jun 17th, 04, 3:06 PM Yes, they will fit. The ones I'm runnin came from a 97 truck.
I had the machine shop clean em up, replace a few bad valves and install a set of LT4 springs and retainers. I'm extremly pleased with em. They make gobs of torque!
BTW, don't forget that you will need a Vortec Intake and associated gaskets. I got a new off brand polished Vortec intake from Ebay for $99.00

broke Jun 17th, 04, 8:01 PM Just make sure you get 1996+ vortec heads. Casting 906 or 062. There are some older headers that people refer to as "vortec" and they're pretty much junk.
cjlandry Jun 17th, 04, 10:05 PM I didn't realize that "Vortec" heads were produced before '96.
Stick with the 062 or 906 castings. Otherwise, they're not what you're looking for.

But, so many guys mistake any SBC head with a centerbolt valve cover and non standard intake bolt angles as a "Vortec" head.
I've run across this many times...
69chevelle355 Jun 18th, 04, 9:28 AM i guess thats what i get for not doing my research.....thanks for clearing that up billscamino and cjlandry

Schurkey Jun 20th, 04, 10:54 AM Anyone besides me remember GM using the term "Vortec" in relation to the 90 degree V-6 as installed in pickups in '85?
The "Vortec" heads everyone talks about came out in '96, small block and big block. But that isn't the first use of the word "Vortec" by GM.
Glenn1018 Jun 20th, 04, 11:57 AM Sure you're not thinking of "4-Tech"?
Umass Jun 20th, 04, 2:11 PM Ive seen blazers with V6's and the name vortec on the plastic intake covers.

bored&stroked Jun 21st, 04, 1:18 AM yes the 4.3 got named a vortec back in the 80's. The L31 vortec heads that everyone wants are 96+ production truck castings.
