My 66 Chevelle SS396 had the motor done 5 years ago (including rings) and then was sold to the guy I bought it from who let it sit for 4 years in an unheated quonset. In the year I have had it, I have put less than 500 miles on it but I started noticing that oil was coming out the dipstick tube. I changed the tube because when I taped the dipstick in, I noticed it still coming out where the tube entered the oil pan. Now with new tube and dipstick taped in place there is a slight film that forms on the valve cover by the oil filler cap. No smoke coming out of exhaust or pcv and pcv valve is new. Any one with any ideas other than rings?

It may be normal. As the engine gets broken in some of that pressure will go away. Had the same issue on my 396 that sat for almost 8 yrs on an engine stand. Was blowing oil out the dipstick and the breather because of the pressure. Took about 5-600 miles runs good now no oil. You do have the pvc hooked up? right?

Yes, the PCV is hooked up. On the other valve cover with the oil filler cap, there is a hole that had a grommet and a little elbow that tied into a rubber hose that went into the air cleaner. When I first got the car last fall, a friend of mine ripped that hose and elbow out and thought I was better off with a breather cap in that hole instead. It wasn't until this spring that I noticed oil accumulating on the exhaust manifold by the dipstick tube and after checking all the usual stuff I replaced that breather cap with the hose and elbow again. This seemed to reduce the problem somewhat, but it is still there - especially after a longer drive. Anyway, what you say is music to my ears. You're the first one not so say, " Yeah it's definitely the rings!" thx for your help:hurray:

Actually, when I changed the dipstick and tube I drained all the oil, changed the oil filter then measured off exactly 4 qts of oil and poured it in. I then ran the car a few minutes to fill the oil filter, let it sit a bit and looked on the dipstick to see where it was. It didn't match the full mark on the stick so I filed a line in where the oil topped out at. If anything, I may be a little low because I used 4 litres (I'm in Canada eh?) and then estimated the difference between 4 litres and 4 American quarts at about 10% and added another less than 1/2 a litre.
