hey guys. I'm a fairly mechanical guy, but i never really messed around with axles all that much. i have a 67 chevelle with a 72 12 bolt rear. my drivers side axle is bent slightly so i wanted to swap over to moser axles. while i am in there i'd like to replace the axle bearings and seals, as i think i may be losing a bearing. My questions is: how hard is it to replace the axle bearings? and can i do this without a press, ive heard that they needed to be pressed in. and can i replace the axles, bearings and seals without removing the carrier? are there any articles or videos that anyone know about? oh, and just a little backround on the car: its a 67 with a 72 12 bolt rear, 3:73 posi, eaton carrier, 4 speed muncie and a nicely worked 350. Another reason i want to get in there and check it out is because i recently launched my driveshaft dumping the clutch (oops) that was about 2 days ago, and today i get in the car to go to work and as im turned around i hear a clunk coming from the rear (hope its maybe just a bearing) the clunk went away, but every now and again theres a scraping, almost grinding sound coming from the rear. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thanks agin in advance guys

All You need to do is remove the cover, and pull the cross shaft. Then You will be able to push the axle's in, and remove the c-clip's. Pull the axles out, yank out the seals, and bearings. Replace the bearings, by tapping them in with a drift, or a socket the same diameter. Then smear some RTV around the outside of the seals, and tap them into place. Lube up the seals, and axle's, slid into place, replace c-clips, cross shaft, Use loc-tite on the cross shaft bolt, install cover.

wheeew! thanks dave, that sounds simple enough to do in the driveway. I was just worried about the bearings, i keep seeing articles about having them pressed in at a shop, and i kind of like to do whatever i can myself. wish me luck!

Pressing is for the carrier bearing's. You won't need to take that out.
