I realized recently I bought my 64 Camino in 1990, when I was 16. I've had it for almost 18 years, come October. I cruised it in high school and college, got a career going and a family, a divorce, another marriage and another kid, the acquisition and failure of a buisness, so much more. The root of it all is that I can't see ever getting rid of it. How long have you had yours? How old were you when you bought it? Is there any appeal today for kids to buy a 40 year old car?

Well I was 21 when I got my 72 Chevelle project. Had it for a little over a year. Hopefully will have it completed in the next couple of years.

I bought my 70 in February of 1998 right before I turned 18. I bought my 69 malibu in 1999, my 69 Charger in October 2001, my 70 convertible in October 2005. In between, I've had about 10 other Chevelles that I have bought, sold, parted out, and scrapped. Each car I have restored (the 70 SS, 69 Malibu, and 69 Charger) has taken 2.5 years.

First one a 1972 Malibu was purchased in 1984 at the tender age of 18.

Second was a 1967 Malibu bought in 1987 I was 20

Last one is a 1968 Malibu that I got just 5 short years ago.

I bought mine when I was 16, 3 years ago!

I got a job at 15 saved ALL my paychecks, was literally 10 minutes from buying a beat up dodge duster when my dad got a call from a coworker saying that he saw a car driving home that I would LOVE.

And the story began...LOL

Old Blue was bought as a roller in orange in 1993. I was 29. She was my 3rd or 4th but the same color (originally L code Teal blue) as my first 68 SS396 owned in 1983. Replaced an Ash gold/parchment 4 speed car that I was hunting for parts on. I had a friend at DMV at the time and was able to track history to a small town up by Spokane WA from the early 80's but couldn't find any further info though. My buddy's wife was making fun of me today as I happen to know off the top of my head the build date of most of my rigs (Including the newer stuff). :D

Bought my '65 about 6 months ago. My dad got his '70 when I was 16, that was about 9 years ago. I bought my first real project 2 years ago, a '55 Chevy post that I sold to buy the Malibu. If I had it to do all over again, I would have probably bought a Chevelle first.

As far as kids finding it appealing to buy a 40+ year old car, I live in Miami Florida, and down here it seems that the kids all want something new and fancy. I guess they all think its gonna get them girls or something. As for my personal experience, I wanted something old from the get go. My 16yr old sister does too.

I'm a late bloomer I guess. Bought the 69 3 years ago when I was 41 and bought the 66 last year. Had other muscle cars when I was in my teens and twenty's but had to give it up for awhile while the family grew.

My first car was a 71 Chevelle SS..bought it when I was 16..thought I'd never gid rid of it..had it for 4 years...traded it for a 69 SS396 that I had for 6 months..then traded the 69 SS396 for a 70 SS396 (what I always wanted)
Had the 70 SS396 for 10 years..then sold it after I bought the black cherry LS6 car in my signature which is what I always really wanted..a 70 SS454 LS6..its not matching #'s...but its mine..and I have had it for 7 years

I'm the late bloomer here:yes:, I don't believe I had even ever been in a Chevelle until I bought my 66 ........and talk about similarities,
I bought my 66 three years ago when I was 44 and bought the 69 last year, your my alter ego:D

then traded the 69 SS396 for a 70 SS396 (what I always wanted)
which is what I always really wanted..a 70 SS454 LS6

So Chris , what your saying is, you have what you always REALLY wanted vs what you ALWAYS wanted :D

My first 69 Chevelle was a Malibu straight 6 that I bought in 1987 and sold it in 1989 as I was finding it hard to find parts to restore it. I only paid 400.00 for it. Kick myself now. The one I have now bought in May of this year is a 69 SS 396 that I recently found what was left a build sheet on top of the fuel tank, and was able to see it the VIN and Z code for the SS package I'm 38. I was born in 69 and always liked the style. This one's a keeper.

Dec. 1994 - I bought my '69 SS396 for $1000 at age 12
Apr. 1998 - I bought my '69 Malibu for $500 at age 15

I still have both, as well as a 66 wagon and 66 convertible that we've bought in the last couple years... also owned a bunch of others (66 el camino, 68 Malibu, 64 2-door wagon, and 70 El Camino) that I've sold... I'm 25 now. :)

since then, I have owned many, many chevelles.
as for the ones I currently have....
the 68 convertible was aquired in summer of 90,
the 69 ss was aquired in 86,
and the latest, a 68ss made it onto my property about three months ago.

When I graduated in 84, I worked in Illinois all summer roofing for my Dad. Took the 3 grand I made roofing, bought a 72 malibu which I kept for 4-5 years. I killed more deer in that car than I did deer hunting those years. It seemed everytime I would come home, out in the sticks, deer would be attracted to my car. I hit 5 deer in 2 years and finally it was so bad it was undrivable. Junked it for parts and the local junkyard still had the shell of it until 5-6 years ago and it was crushed. I only have 1 pic of me with that car. We have 4 chevelles now and still live in the same spot, I just drive alot slower now and watch for deer, lol.

I bought two 64 Chevelles for $800 in 1987. I was 14 at the time. (yes, it was my money that bought them) I looked older than I was, and I lyed about my age to get a job turning wrenches at a fast lube place. I worked 23 hours a week and still did well in school. I don't have that Chevelle anymore, but over the years I've had 2 64's, 2 65's, 5 69's, 2 70's, (one which was a convertable), a 71 and a 72. I was never able to get my "unicorn", a '68. For whatever reason, everytime a deal came up, something happened that I couldn't swing it. I finally got one now. I'll be homeless, living in it, before I get rid of it. I've had it now for two years.

I bought my first chevelle in october from the orginal owners grandson, im 18, no plans to let it out of this family anytime soon, down the road i want to get another 69 that will be more performance oriented then a straight 6 powerglide:thumbsup:
I think the reason newer cars are more appealing to kids is because alot of them dont want to do the matience/restoration thing anymore and just want to buy it and go, i was a little concerned about myself giving up on the project but ive never had so much fun covered in undercoating at -10 degrees celius on a concrete floor:D

My first and only so far to date is my 68 Malibu I bought when I was 18. Drove it for about a year then decided to restore it...spent two years and lots of money..(good thing I lived at home:thumbsup:). Got it done..didnt see too much driving since my 8 years of marriage with my now ex-wife. She never liked my car...all she wanted me to have was a motorcycle.

Now after the divorce, I got her back, (not the ex, the car)with fresh 3.73s and looking to have some fun this summer!

Still got it, holds sentimental value as well because its all I have left of my dad since he helped with all of it..taught me about cars...they will bury me with that car...lol

My first car and Chevelle was a 64 SS purchased for $400 at the age of 16 in 1974. It was paint code EE (Bahama green metallic) that seems to be a rare color.
Had a 69 SS El Camino in '78. It was silver.
A blue '66 Malibu 327 4-speed around 81.
Never kept any of them for over a couple years.
Now I have a '69 SS El Camino since 04 which I plan to keep as long as other stuff goes right.

I was 19 when I bought my first Chevelle, December 1968. It was a new 1969 Malibu, Lemans Blue with a black vinyl top and black interior. May of 1971 I had recently come back from VN and traded my Malibu for a 1970 SS 396, Astro Blue with black buckets, 4-speed and manual steering. My pregnant wife loved me for that. Several Chevelles and three kids later, it was 1985 when I found my current Chevelle that you can see in my signature. It's the longest I've ever owned one car and I think I'll keep it for a few more years.

Still got it. Still got the wife too! LOL
Drove it about 37,000 miles before parking it in 1990. A lot of aggravation/money getting it restored but it will get there one of these days. It will never be for sale. My 22 year old daughter did and still loves the car (she is the daughter my wife was pregnant with). She has told her siblings that it is HERS and they can have the rest.

I wanted a ’70 Chevelle BB since age 10. At 16 my Dad refused to let me get one, his reasons kept me alive. Fast forward 20 years, with an understanding wife who preferred the ’66 – ’67 body style we bought our ’66 numbers matching Chevelle SS on 7/14/02 at 1:15pm (CST) and I was 37.

As far as today’s kids wanting 40 year old cars – I find it amazing how many actually know something about these cars. I run into it as cruise nights where several bring their 40 – 50 year old cars and their not "Dad's car". Some are daily drivers. I saw a ’67 300 parked recently at a high school fund raiser car wash. It belonged to a kid on the wrestling team who came over to pop the hood so I could check it out further. He had just finished rebuilding the 6 cylinder engine and had it all detailed to original look the rest of the car was in “survivor” state. He was so proud of it.

Bought my first Chevelle in Nov 1985 @ 21. A 1969 Malibu 2 door hdtp with #'s matching L48, TH350 and a 12 bolt 2:56 non posi. Has 193,000 miles and has only had a cam gear and valve cover gaskets. Engine has never been apart other than that. It's now been in storage since 1992.
I've since acquired and kept 3 other 1969 Chevelles. Another 2 door hdtp 4 speed Malibu, a 69 convertible and a 69 sta wag with a 396.
These are all keepers and I'm not going to get rid of any of them anytime soon. Gas can go to $20 a gal. I'll just park them in the front yard and stare at them.

I bought mine in 2000 when I was 27. It's appearance has only been changed with 3 car washes, 1 buffing, and different wheels and tires. Bought it from my wife's aunt after it sat since the '80s. Pic is in Sig.

I've owned 6 Chevelles since I bought my first one in 1982, a '66 SS for $450 that I sold in 1989. I bought the '69 in my signature in 1985 for $1,500, and she has stuck by me through thick and thin for the last 23 years.

My 66 malibu was my first car at 14 and have owned it now for 20 years. Is going through a make-over to get her to a dual status street/strip car. Hope to be back on the road next summer!

dad gave me the keys at 17, used to rip on her in the high school parking lot after school to impress the girls, and teachers hated me, cops loved me. too young for the gun. but hell i you're young only once. :beers:
